Going to New Zealand for a long weekend in February. Anyone ever been to the north island? In particular, the Coromandel Peninsula?

I don't think we went to the Coromandel, but we did spend 2 weeks on the north island and we saw Auckland, Hobbiton, the Bay of Islands, the Tongariro Crossing, Wellington and a couple of Maori places. I might not be able to help that much because everything was brief, but let me know if you want any more info about any of those.

How did you find it security wise and where abouts were you if ya don't mind me asking?

We took local buses everywhere and we had absolutely no problems - everyone was very friendly. We went to Bogotá, Villa de Leyva, Bucaramanga, Santa Marta, Parque Tayrona, Cartagena, Medellin, Calí, San Agustin and Popayan. I'd highly recommend it, happy to help if you want any more info.

Went just to Cartagena, and then took a bus to a place called Taganga and from there to parque tayrona.
Highlight of the trip was actually Taganga, was such a cool place.

I've been to Amsterdam once already but barely went to the clubs. Chelsea were playing in the Europa League final and literally it was just a 2 day street party for Chelsea fans. Best 2 days of my life so far I reckon.

Amsterdam is great. Went just before Christmas for four nights. Buzz to the city and plenty to keep you occupied. Will definitely be going back. Berlin is likely to be the next city break. Thinking a week in Malta for the summer holiday, although I don't know anyone who has been there before.

Malta is nice - used to go over there as a kid a fair bit, used to stay on the island of Gozo more so than Malta though. Pretty quiet in areas but a nice place.

The one in Manchester was brilliant so you could probably times it by about 10 in Germany - and it would be good. Looking at it myself - which city you thinking of heading too?

Although I myself haven't, a friend of mine is currently doing it, working whilst he's there.
From what I gather from his endless photos/selfies and drunken messages/status updates, it's apparently awesome and seems to be a continual pissup for him.

How much would you expect to have by September?

I think if you want to do a year, you'd need to get a working holiday visa anyway. Normal visas were only three months when I went. Even three grand sounds like it should be enough for a working holiday visa, flights, and one month's living expenses while you settle in/find a job. Should be okay after that, once you're earning?

As for other ideas, obviously your money goes further in Asia or South America.

Should be going travelling next year sometime. Have no idea where to start with it all....I have about 5k saved up, should be closer to 7k once my tax returns come in.

I'd love to go to Vietnam but after that I'm not sure...

Going for a meeting with a mate (an excuse to get fucked up midweek) this week to lay the plans for it all.

I've always looked at Oktoberfest as I imagine it'd be excellent, but the way the prices seemingly keep rising (especially in/near Munich) are bonkers.

Off to Kefalonia in September. The other half's parents have booked us all a 5 star gorgeous villa there, but we had to pay for flights.

Apparently because not many flights go in and out of Kefalonia they charge a bomb. Because we was restricted on dates because of the villa, Thomson wanted £420.00 each plus baggage and this was from Birmingham (where her parents live near).

Instead it took a while but found a flight for 11 days from Manchester (closer to me) which would leave me to have an extra holiday 2 days either side for £190 each including baggage. Then booked an apartment which is rated #1 on Trip Advisor in the area for £17.00 a night with an amazing view.

Overall it has cost us £245.00 each for 11 nights in Kefalonia with 1 week in a 5 star villa and 4 nights in a great apartment. Winner.
