Days of heaven.

A manual labourer and his girlfriend find work on a farm. They pretend to be siblings and when the dying farmer shows an interest in her, they decide to play along so she inherits his fortune when he dies.

Pretty bland story and predictable however it was well shot. Not a film I'll ever want to see again mind. 6/10.

I watched on 4OD today

Eleven Men against Eleven

it is a cracking wee film for football fans, filmed in the early 90's which rips the piss out of modern footballers, agents, corruption, hooligans etc, etc........its alot of fun, remember it from a while ago, but could never find it then found it was on 4od.

can get on this link here, recommend it for footy fans......the ending with the relegation battle match wih the bribed ref and goalkeeper is bloody ridiculous.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
I am sad and disappointed to report that I managed to sit through the entirety of Human Centipede 3.

I've not seen the first two, but know the premise. There was a man who shouted incomprehensively for quite a lot of it. Some rather badly done gore. An ex porn star doing not anything a porn star would be famous for and Julia Roberts' brother being a bit weird.

It tries to be quite 'meta' - the director plays himself in a cameo - and different, and could possibly have been a tiny bit clever..... But it's not. It's just intensely shit.

Holy Motors.
From dawn to dusk, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar, a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man... He seems to be playing roles, plunging headlong into each part - but where are the cameras? Monsieur Oscar is alone, accompanied only by Céline, the slender blonde woman behind the wheel of the vast engine that transports him through and around Paris. He's like a conscientious assassin moving from hit to hit. In pursuit of the beautiful gesture, the mysterious driving force, the women and the ghosts of past lives. But where is his true home, his family, his rest? -- (C) Official Site

By far the most trippy, insane film I've ever seen; and I've seen Fear and loathing in Las Vegas.

Brilliantly entertaining, though.

Distance [2001]

A film by Hirokazu Koreeda about members of a cult who poison a water supply resulting in death and injuries, then commit mass suicide, and the film starts with family members of the tragedy heading to the site where they lived to pay their respects on an anniversary of the event. Being right out in the middle of nowhere its a long trek and they find that their car gets stolen so they seek shelter overnight in the house where the cultists lived and discuss their loved ones with a former cultist who escaped, whom they chance upon.

This was a real slow-burner and it was filmed in almost a documentary style with hand-held cameras for long periods (the director originally made documentaries before progressing to film), which is a bit jarring to begin with but you accustom to pretty quickly. There is many subtle twists along the way as they begin to uncover some of the events that unfolded, and the ending leaves a lot to the imagination. Its a long film where not a lot happens, but it does ask many questions without answer leaving you to make your own insights into it all.

Its a film that you watch and think about for long periods after it finishes, though it does test your patience with the slow pace of it all.

Regeneration [1997]

A very powerful and emotional film about WW1 soldiers who are shell-shocked and are sent to a hospital in order to recover and be sent back out to the warfront. Among those who are sent there are the poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen who are there for different reasons, with the former being a war hero who is fed up with the way the war is run, questioning those in command and who is sent there either to repent, or to be court-martialed; and Owen who is in deep shock but who recovers and begins to write beautiful and damning poetry about his experiences. Other soldiers stories are told too, and they divulge their innermost fears to Jonathan Pryce who begins to experience psychosomatic trauma through them also as it all begins to grind him down.

A sided story with Johnny Lee Miller is very well done indeed and imo he has never been better playing someone who is scared yet proud, and angry at his own supposed cowardice for succumbing to shell-shock; and it follows him as he tries in his own way to recover.

This has a tremendous British cast in it, and it has sensitive direction letting the characters and actors breathe through it all. Some scenes are horrifying however particularly right at the start and also in another scene where a soldier played by Kevin McKidd gets 'cured' by electrodes inserted into his mouth.

Perhaps the best film I have seen on this matter, and definitely worth a watch.

Blunt and Brolin are good, but this is del Toro's movie, he is fantastic. Excellent direction once again from Villeneuve and some gorgeous cinematography from Deakins, especially the Juarez, aerial and tunnel scenes.

One of my favorite movies of the year, Matt Damon is brilliant and it was surprisingly funny.

Found it utterly hilarious because it's so dreadful. 100 minutes of inaudible shouting and some really shit acting. I found the first one ok at best and the second I thought was very well done. This is just a train wreck though. I don't get why people are so disgusted at the franchise. It's child's play.

Just sat through Sex Ed starring now weird looking adult Haley Joel Osmant. It was alright, it touches on an issue that needs to be discussed more. A couple of amusing moments here and there. Not quite as gross out as I was expecting. Worth a watch I guess. 6/10.

On another of the Girlfriend Czech lists last night.

I served the King of England

Thought it was a very beautifully shot film. it is a saucy comedy about the life of a guy with ambitions to become a millionaire and sleep with extremely beautiful woman. Goes over his life and him working his way up, then giving nearly all of it up to chase the woman of his dreams (she is a Nazi while they are trying to grab his country) then follows the steps during and after the war where he finally gets his goals then loses them.

Very enjoyable film with a few funny moments and some extremely sexy women in the film.......and they are shot very well, film for me contains the most sexy looking women in one film I've seen and some fantastic breast shots...........not that I was looking.

but its a good film, worth hunting down if can.

After my initial reaction of 'What the hell is going on?', which I guess is a sign of a good post-apocalyptic film, I loved it! Non-stop action but the action was so good that it never got tedious or boring.

An Inspector Calls [1954]

Had a bit of time to kill earlier today and this was on Film4, and it was starring the magnificent Alastair Sim who surely is the greatest character actor Scotland ever produced so I said that it had to be a must watch! Not having seen or known anything about the play or the many adaptations of it I wondered what the fuss was about as this is one of the most successful plays around.

The story starts off with which seemed to be a simple enough case of a policeman coming round and questioning a well-to-do family hosting a party one by one about how they knew a downtrodden, kind-souled young woman who ends up committing suicide, and how each one in their own way could be accountable for her demise. However it turns out at the end to be a bit more complicated than it seems and there is more to the Inspector himself than at first appears.

I really enjoyed this, it had a great sense of tension throughout and uncovering each person's role in the story was handled well. A bit hammy acting as was the norm back then from the woman who plays the unfortunate victim of the piece; but that is more than made by another towering performance from Sim as the layers of his character unfold, and also the Dickensian twist at the end leading to a questioning but satisfactory conclusion.

Bridge of Spies: 8/10

Another Spielberg/Hanks combo that i enjoyed. Basically, Hanks plays the role of an insurance lawyer that has to defend an alleged Russian Spy during the cold war era, and he gets in pretty deep when they ask him to partake in an exchange with a US pilot that's stranded in the Soviet Union.

The plot is fairly easy to follow and it doesn't feel as complicated as say something like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, it's well paced and well acted and will appeal to everyone, even those who don't give a toss about history and the cold war.

He Named Me Malala: 6/10

Never been a huge fan of documentaries but i didn't enjoy that particular one either. Started off really well but it just sort of drifted off.

The Martian 8/10:

There's not much to dislike about it, Ridley Scott has finally found his form again and i loved the humor/sarcastic tone of the movie, although it could have been better if they made it 20 minutes shorter.

The Walk 7.5/10:

The last 20 minutes are absolutely stunning if you're watching it in IMAX, but the first 2 acts are fairly slow and irritating since you have to listen to Joseph Gordon Levitt's non-stop blabbers in a French accent (i like him, but that was too much).

Everest 7/10:

Saw it on a small shitty screen and i still enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of the cast although i'm not sure what Jake Gyllenhaal was doing there as he barely appeared. The visuals are predictably stunning and the cast did very well, but i did feel like it went on a bit for too long.

Very much enjoyed this. Really clever way of trying to explore emotions. A film that works for all ages.

Inside Out (2015).
Enjoyable Disney film. Niece loved it, which is all that matters really. 7/10.

John Wick (2014).
I loved it. There's not much of a story, Keanu Reeves is a former hitman who left the the criminal world for his wife, she dies and leaves him a dog, Theon Greyjoy is the son of a Russian mafia kingpin who crosses Reeves, steals his prized Mustang and kills the dog. Lots of stylish killing ensues. Bloody good action film. 9/10.
