Erdogan suggesting it's a small minority of the military - via FaceTime. Says he is still president and has called for protests. Interesting to see how much of the military is involved, don't get the impression it's a small amount.

Seems a fair bit is kicking off in Ankara currently judging by a video live link with a professor there - security buildings bombed and shot at as the video above suggests.

Deeply reassured at this time to have a foreign secretary whose most memorable statement on Turkey was to rhyme Ankara with ****era.

That's what I was thinking earlier.

Reports Erdogan is in Mamaris and hasn't fled. People gathering in Ankara as a protest apparently.

This is amazing. Who is writing the 2016 script...fucking hell. Really hope the Turkish military pulls this off.

Thing is Erdogan has support from probably half the population... Crowds in Turkey genuinely out in support of Erdogan... Has the potential to escalate badly, let's hope it doesn't.

It'll end up as civil war. So more poor innocent people who are thrown into chaos and have to leave their homes to simply survive will be displaced and we can opt out of taking any in, because apparently we don't control our borders.

I'd imagine nobody really knows. Still way too many questions - how much of the military is involved is probably a fairly large one. Erdogan has circa 50% support. It's an illegal move... Coups tend not to have the happiest if endings.

Tanks have opened fire on government buildings.

Alleged - soldiers opened fire on protesters crossing the First Bosphorus Bridge.

Also alleged - F-16 Turkish fighter jet downed the helicopter seen in the previous videos.

Yep and it's worrying too hear that civilians are being shot on. But my uncle is Turkish and from speaking to him even Erdogan's supporters are becoming increasingly tired of Erdogan is recent months, especially with his attitude towards Syria. The military have been clever to be fair, usurping him whilst he is on holiday. He's centralised so much power his cronies in Istanbul/Ankara probably have no idea what to do.

Seems the government are now in control of Ankara. Ataturk airport has been stormed by civilians. Indicators suggest the coup is failing. Repercussions from this will be massive and long lasting.

Shame. Will be interesting to see how this progresses over the next few days. Erdogan seemed to get his supporters out in force tonight but there is plenty who would rebel against him. Taksim square is in for a busy fee nights. I fear Erdogan just has too many people under the thumb, the result of years of weakening the influence of the military.

Very interested to see if this allows Erdogan to double his grip on power or exposes his lack of control.
