Do you at least accept though that a huge reason for pay inequality is because women drop out the workforce to have kids.

You state that women aren't paid for their childcare. In an era where women have strong reproductive control by making the decision to have children they are accepting that responsibility.
Yes. This was my point about emotional labour. Women do a disproportionately large share of childcare.

Childcare is, in essence, unpaid emotional labour, and is generally gendered as feminine.

So women are generally socially pressured into putting their careers on hold.

These aren't new ideas.

So work is gendered and work gendered as feminine pays less than work gendered as masculine (or is not paid at all e.g. women do the bulk of childcare).

How does this not equate to a "gender pay gap"?

Because women aren't being paid less based on their gender, they're being paid less based on the life choices they make. Those choices may be biologically influenced by their sex, but that's an internal obstacle, not an external one that society is foisting upon them, and that's an important distinction to make. Men, for example, are far more likely to die in the workplace. That isn't because society is discriminating against men, it's because we're bigger and stronger and are biologically more suited to dangerous jobs. There's nothing stopping us from avoiding those jobs if we really wanted to though, which is true of women too. We wouldn't dream of coddling men in this scenario, so why must we treat women like delicate little flowers that we must socially engineer some help for? It's always felt like a kind of misogyny of low-expectations to me.

Today was International Migrants Day. Has a bit of a so-what factor really. I think it's just another senseless UN day which mainly exists for places like Guernsey and Malawi to issue four stamps about it and for UN committees to meet to discuss how to do not a lot about it.
Yesterday was International Brown Paper Bag Day; tomorrow is International Combine Harvester Fanatics Day.

Dunno why but the closer we get to Christmas, the sadder I get about the whole refugee crisis. Most refugees today are, I suspect, Muslim than Christian, but it still makes me sad. It always makes me think of that "Do they know it's Christmas?" line in Feed the World and the suggested response of "Yes, Bob. They're poor not fucking stupid." ....but I know that wasn't the meaning of the question.

Although it's a but senseless to ponder over how people of a different faith think or act at Christmas, there's a lot of people living in tents in shit conditions who, last December, were probably sitting at home with all their things and lifestyle surrounding them, comfortable and content, not realising they would be homeless, possibly stateless and not wanted in a far-off land within 12 months.

I just hope that the peace and goodwill we talk about - and sing about - at this time of year, gets extended to include both refugees and for the whole year.

I wonder how much foreign aid is about aid and how much is about bribing states into continuing policies we like.

But isn't that like saying we shouldn't help the homeless or poor in this country because we have a space programme?
