The Return of James Berrett (Vadaine v Jabo, York v Carlisle)

Carlisle travel to York this weekend on the back of 3 consecutive league wins, sitting 9th in the league.

York have found some form recently, with just 1 defeat in 5 league games, putting them 17th in the table.

I went to this fixture last season, and it was possibly the worst game I've seen in the last few years. Neither side looked interested, and it made for an absolute borefest.
I'll be making the relatively short trip again, so hopefully it's a better watch this season.

It's almost guaranteed that Berrett will score, probably a free-kick or a penalty.

Another tough game, but I think we're capable of a victory.

Berrett has been in decent form, and looks like a very good signing for us at the moment. Vadaine has also looked useful, I don't think anyone is expecting him to score a hatful but he puts himself about and makes a nuisance of himself.

We seem to have forgotten how to defend so I imagine there'll be a few goals. Can't predict the result but I hope it's more entertaining than recent fare at Bootham. As mentioned, it's at least hardly likely to be worse than last year's corresponding fixture.

We really need to go there looking for a positive result and I know it's going to be a tough one. York is a place where we don't usually get wins but I think it's about time that bloody changed!

I said when you signed him, if you use Berrett correctly, he's a good quality league one midfielder. He's technically good, a decent passer and can score goals. It all depends on the midfielders he has around him. For us, when he had hard working midfielders around him, he looked too good for league 1 and destined to move to the championship. Then it all changed when suddenly he was asked to do the dirty work in midfield after other players had moved on. This is where his Carlisle career sadly declined and probably why he's now in League 2. When he was good he was good, so I hope he can get back to that, but after Saturday obviously.

Berrett plays that attacking role from the midfield 3. Looks excellent. I can totally imagine him being ineffective if asked to muck in deeper.

We have a problem in defence and wing-back. There's an obvious way to damage us, but I'll leave that to your coaches.

It's odd what's happened to that Carlisle midfield, the year we both nearly made the League One play-offs it was class with Taiwo, Berrett and Noble, but none of them have really done anything since.

I think it was just one of those things where the three players gelled well together, exuberance of youth in a team that hit form just at that time in the season, I mean it wasn't like they had several seasons of quality, I think just the one season, or even half a season as it took Taiwo a little while to become a first team regular, and then due to them all being young players, we got a few comments, especially in a game towards the end of that season against Huddersfield. Certainly would have expected them all to go onto better things though, but Taiwo left for family reasons rather than footballing reasons (turned down a contract to move closer to his family in Leeds, then signed for Hibs).

After that they were never really in a midfield that suited their qualities and both looked pretty poor in the season we went down. I can't remember the exact formation that Abbott was playing but it tended to treat them both as box-to-box centre mids. Noble was released and Berrett turned town a new contract to sign for Yeovil though the majority of fans were incensed that Berrett (who just looked like he couldn't be arsed by that point) was offered a contract while Noble who still had that terrier quality was released.

I do miss the unexplained Noble loving, plenty of people used to constantly say he's good but were never able to put a finger on what it is he's good at.

Noble was good at putting in a shift and doing the donkey work and Berrett was good at the more technical bit - for some reason their roles were sort of blended towards the end of their time with us and thus they both became equally ineffective.

As for the game, this is another one we should really be looking to win. Hopefully we'll have Troy back in time - his injury was 7-10 days, and that was last weekend, so he should be fit I think - as he's more than capable of dealing with Oliver and taking away any effectiveness he has as a target man.

I'd probably try and keep the team from Dagenham apart from Troy hopefully coming in for Miller to go back into the wing-back slot in place of McQueen. Having said that, the striker we've got from Newcastle is apparently very highly rated - although so was Adam Campbell when he joined and he turned out to be both crap and a bit of a nobhead - so depending on how good he is maybe he could have a run out. I probably wouldn't expect him to start straight away, maybe a late cameo appearance to see how he copes.

Well firstly the Quick answer to jacbncfc is....Lee Miller.

You must remember I had him down on the L1 section back then as the reincarnation of Pele and used to argue that he was more important to us than Rhodes was for Huddersfield...him banging about 30 goals that season.

As soon as Millers form died, our team collapsed as did a lot of players, especially in midfield. Abbotts entire style relied on a good targetman and Abbott never at all knew what to do without one

Secondly to the game and its a nice wee milestone game for me as this is my first away match since Rotherham game back in November 2013 when it was pretty much certain CMW was signing and I'd decided I'd had enough of the Football Club, now I've come back from a 20 away games a season supporter to probs at best 2 away games and this was one I picked.

I had a choice of this or Liverpool, lets say as a proper lower league fan who hates all the glory-hunting clap-trap it took me about 10 seconds to decided, here is hoping I picked the right game result wise

I enjoy York's ground......it is a crap hole, but there isn't many left anymore and its another on its way out so I wanted one last trip, although I am annoyed they have given seating tickets BEFORE the game..........I loved how you had to purchase terrace tickets, go into the ground then pay £2 at a little hut for seating, it was unique....ah well.

York are unlucky, I expected 1,500 at start of season, its a popular away day but Liverpool will halve that to 750 me thinks, its too expensive to do both, but I am hoping we continue our 3-3-4 to at least make it an entertaining game.

Not a lucky ground at all, I expect York fans will look forward to this one as usually they serve up a steller performance when they play us, even when York only won about 3 games in an entire year 2 of them were beating us at Bootham Crescent........just something about the place. At least I've seen a rare win at that ground, back in 1996 in the Auto-Windscreen Shield, I think its our only win there for a good 25 plus years.

Reffed York twice in conference in '11 - 1-1 draw with Crawley & 2-1 away defeat at Abbey Stadium. Never reffed Carlisle. Neither a homer nor an awayer - straight 50/50 split. In 5 L2 games this season he has given 15 Y & 3 R - very high red. Once gave 26 R in 57 games - off the scale.

Berrett does seem to like a yellow. I'm just hoping for a decent game, our recent matches at home have been dire and attendances are starting to fall already. I think the signs are good, though, we are scoring goals and so are Carlisle (or at least Jabo is). Carlisle fans seemed a decent bunch last season, looking forward to welcoming them back.

We are still a good way from looking convincing at home and I'm still not sure the formation and personnel works with the team still needing strengthening out wide, both defensive and attacking wise. However on the flip side we are improving and I can't see a relegation struggle this season with more than enough in the squad. I like all of the summer signings and I can't remember the last time that happened. A lot of talk on Barrett on this thread. When we signed him I though he was just what we needed given we already had summerfield and Penn doing the graft, we just needed a more offensive midfielder who could knock in a few goals and that's exactly how it's worked out. A league one player in many respects. However I think Carlisle will come away with 3 points tomorrow given they know where the net is. 3-1

I think you just answered your own question. We are poor at home and you're on a good run. It's hard to be confident when your team is so poor at home regardless of the record between the two clubs, I'm not a big believer in records anyway, the best team on the day still usually wins.

For me it's the formation. We have been playing 5-3-2 with zero threat from our wing backs. We still don't have the quality out wide to play that formation but Wilcox persists. It's very frustrating to watch at times.

That could be interesting then... as we play with wing-backs too, but we play them so far up the pitch it isn't even a 3-5-2... more a 3-3-4.

If your wing-backs are playing more as regular full-backs then I can see the ball spending an awful lot of the game in your full-back positions... whether our attacking will prevail against a 5 man defence is another thing, and you're always going to be likely to score against ours.

that will make it quite interesting as shoddy says as it sounds like we both play 5-3-2 but from different angles, going to be interesting to see which wing-backs win and that could dictate the game.

Saw a York report the other day saying you could either match up to our formation or play a 4-3-3. I'd say if you match us up we should beat you quite comfortably but if you play 4-3-3 and double up on the wide men we'll really struggle to keep crosses out and could end up having to change formation ourselves to counteract this. I'm not sure we've played 4 at the back at all so far this season so I'd be interested to see how we do if we were forced into this change, I'd say our personnel suits it quite well - arguably better than our current 3-5-2.
