Wonder what the gap is between those returns?

We were relegated in 1986, promoted in 1987 and down again in 2011 (via a season in L1 and 5 L2 PO's), whereas I think York were down in two or three seasons?

York were relegated in 03/04, up in 11/12 and down again in 15/16

Torquay down in 06/07 up again in 08/09, back down 12/13

Chester City down in 99/00 up in 03/04, down in 08/09

Poor shows all around.

Assuming Notts County stay down, could next season be the biggest this league has seen in terms of the size of clubs down here?

All clubs who could average a crowd of over 4000 in a good season. I'd expect most of these to be fighting it out near the top as well.

Phil Brown won't have one iota of National league football and would be a waste of time. You would need to go for a decent Non League manager ( One that knows the Conference anyway ). Then get rid of all your big time charlies and bring in a good selection of hungry non league players. Its all very well having a good budget but you still need to spend wisely. Remember you will be quite a few teams cup final -- So be prepared. Also you need ( and your fans ) to respect the other clubs. Everyone is in the Conference for a reason.

Unless Ron finds the missing warchest and hands over the keys to PB he will not be here. The only slim hope I've got on the new manager front is Darren Currie, he was in the final 3 to interview last summer and knows this division. Got to hope Ron still has his number and can remember his name.

I don't believe Ron when he says we'll have a decent budget, if he carries on as he has the last 3 years I wouldn't be surprised to see the only clubs with lower budgets in this division being the part-timers.
I think everyone will respect the teams here, the last two seasons Dover and Boring Wood have knocked us out of the FA Cup and we've got such a plethora of non-league teams within half hour of Southend you'll often find quite a few Southend fans at local games.

I wonder what our crowds will be like, there is finally a majority anti-Ron sentiment from the fans (10 years too late) and I think early on and especially if we are not near the top end our home crowds could really struggle. Of course if we do alright people are sure to come back Ron or no Ron.

The first priority for the owners is to get us into the football league, so I would expect to see us chucking money at it until that happens. There are other priorities for the owners such as improving the ground, developing a youth set up and an improvement in the women's team but all of that is so much easier once you get out of non-league and they will be aware of that.

Unlike those other sides, we have a decently sized fanbase behind us and we will now be a whole lot more marketable (imagine what having Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenny and new fan Chris Hadfield picturing themselves wearing your company's logo on the home shirt on their Twitters could do for your business), so we will be well set up without the owners needing to pump in millions at a time.

They have already spent monies on the ground and infrastructure already including renovations at club shop new electrical sponsorship boards and a CEO.
In addition there are rumours of new shirt sponsorship worth an eye watering amount.
We also have a new membership scheme
Which at the last count was over 9000 in 10 days.Everyone I know is going to have a season ticket next year and we could be looking at 6000 plus just season ticket holders.
Of course very little money has been spent on players because of the transfer window(apart from the bonus scheme).
That will happen in the Summer indications coming from the owners are we will investing in players in their prime rather than paying over the odds for 31 year olds.
The fly in the ointment is the manager with probably the majority of fans wanting rid of him. His contract is up end of season so be interesting to see what happens then

Did you think that when we were stuck in here for nine years? For what it's worth, I'm all for three up/three down between League 2 and Conference but I'm just interested in whether you even had sympathy for a three up/three down movement before you got stuck yourselves?

If Sutton go up as champions and say an Eastleigh/Bromley get 7th and win the playoffs then Torquay and Hartlepool will be in the division as well. If Wrexham do just spend their way out there's going to be a hell of a fight for one promotion spot.

For me I'd let the Premier Division take over the 2nd tier and then have what is currently League 1, 2 and National Premier be managed by a new body (I'd disband the EFL). Then keep the rest of the pyramid as is.

Torquay and Hartlepool are both very good, but I think they’re both a bit more vulnerable to a manager or couple of key players leaving. The four mentioned will all have budgets big enough that they should challenge whatever.

At this level we're a good draw for many players so I don't worry about that much. We're more vulnerable to our owner to be honest. It's all about when he'll pull the plug.

We don't go up this year, I think we'll have a very difficult future. I may be wrong but it's more than just a hunch like.

I've thought that was fair, too. And, assuming we don't finish in the bottom two after losing to you next week, we would absolutely be getting relegated if we had to play-off against anyone currently around the top of this league.

i’ve always said it should be 3 teams up and down, when in the conference and in the league.

Must admit i’d be nervous as fuck if it were 3 down this season. eek!

I was gutted when Angus left, if there's anything we are still short of it's pace up top and he has that in abundance.

I thought we were goners two months ago, turnaround has been remarkable. Obviously we've been short of away days this season but if there were two to come up for locality reasons I'd have two of Hartlepool, Wrexham or Stockport. I'm enjoying Sutton's season too though, just shows that our year wasn't necessarily a fluke, COVID granted, proving you don't need a massive budget, just a good manager and a bunch of decent, hardworking players. Tinpotters sticking together and all that.

Sutton do remind me a little of Barrow but you had more flair and ability in your side. That said they seem to be throwing it away on purpose as always. Hartlepool and Chesterfield were my bets for promotion this year but with Asante possibly injured Stockport look the best equipped.

At least if Southend and Grimsby come down we will be replacing two proper clubs with two more.

I mean you're right but Wrexham shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the other three, they are going to be omega levels ahead, that's why I hope we escape this season cos next season is gonna be fucked for the rest of us.
