Completed the game yesterday, I feel a substantial hole in my life that I need to fill with the books.

How closely related are the books to the game?

Really want this, I've never been hugely into RPG's so I'm sceptical as to whether I should plump for it or not.

Do it mate. It's worth it for the dialogue and voice acting alone

too many to mention
Currently reading them now, and really enjoying them. See, pretty well translated too.
Enjoying the game but not getting enough time to play it really.
I read all the books (Sword of destiny, last wish, blood of elves, time of contempt, baptism of fire, swallow's tower and lady of the lake - all in German) before I played the first Witcher Game. The latest book was released in German this year in March, but I had no time to read.
I think that's not necessary to read all the books but it the experience is fantastic if you travel through the world, and you can remember some places related them to the books.

As I could see, that there are three books missing in English, which have you read so far? How do you like the stories Do you have a favorite? Imo the atmosphere in the books is really awesome!

I think I'm getting toward the end of the game now. It's starting to feel like that.

Just with Yen, trying to capture a Djinn.

I do not know how far that is away from the end.

Anyone use the witcher gear on this? I'm using something called a 'feline set', basically means I can't take many hits but most enemies die to one or two sword slashes.

My only critique is that there aren't enough high level monsters to test yourself against, other than that it's a very impressive game, probably the best I've played. The graphics are quality too.

I need to come back to this. My PC has been taking what little spare time I've had lately and I've not turned my PS4 on in a month or two now. I think I got to Skellige about level 15 or something and just stopped really playing it anymore - not sure why!

I'm close to finishing (I assume anyway) and decided to mop up all the witcher contracts but 2 of them are bugged (Skellige most wanted and phantom of the trade route) so now I dunno if to wait it out for a fix, or just go onto NG+ and do them then

Just finished it, I assumed I was on for the bad ending but it the one I got seemed pretty decent tbh.
Not much was made of defeating Eredin after all the build up, also what happened to the crone that Ciri didn't finish off?
Kind of miffed I can't finish all the contracts on this playthrough as one of them is bugged so I cant claim the trophy.
Onto Death March NG+ I suppose...

no Ciri is still alive, she's just in another world, she vanished through a portal to fight something else because of her Elder Blood stuff, Geralt was just sulking on my ending for 1 year

Oh ok,
I thought the only way to fight the last crone was to get the 'bad' ending where Ciri dies (I checked because I kind of expected to kill the crone at some point)

I've just bought this game. Played a couple hours so far, done a few quests but nothing major. I've turned down a couple of rewards but I'm guessing I'll have to start accepting cash sooner rather than later.

Anyone got any tips for a novice like myself?

If you're still in White Orchard, find all the places of power and grab the ability points. Put them into whatever you wish, but I suggest maxing the first 'red' ability, the one to do with quick attack strength. Also try and find the ingredients to make 'Swallow', it's the base healing potion and thinks can get rough early game.

What MG said.

Also

*dont pick the aggressive speech options, cos they're usually limiting or at least make things harder in the long run.

*dont bother upgrading or buying weapons til way later in the game. Weapons come thick and fast early on and the real goodies don't emerge til you start finding witcher gear.

*master the side step now so you don't have to later. The dodge roll is handy but freezes your stamina recovery, the latter being vital to Beating some boss battles and contracts that are very reliant on sign usage (eg. The magic trap sign that you need to use regularly to defeat Jenny o the woods at about level ten)

*upgrade the speech and fire signs after you've upgraded the quick and strong attacks fully (can't remember their names igni and axii I think). Fire is a great all rounder and the speech sign maxed out will save you a hell of a lot of time and money in the long run, cos it lets you influence people in dialogue.

*also, those little circles on your weapons in the inventory screen? They're indents for magic stones. Put them in to upgrade your weapon with bonus stats.

*read your quest items and books and notices as they come in cos not only do they fill out the lore and flesh out the universe and characters, but they also add markers and quests to your map sometimes.

*yellow question marks on your map are a priority always. Go the them whenever you see them. Quests are almost always without timer so once you've accepted them you can put them on a back burner for as long as you need to complete them.

*shag the fuck out of every lady who is nice enough to let you have a go.

In my opinion, Quen (shield) is a lot better (abusable) than Igni (fire) against anything but ghosts as you can just spam that shit and hardly ever take damage. If you really want to make things easy, or do able on the harder difficulties, get the Axii alt mode to make one of the enemies fight for you with increased damage.

Thanks for the advice.

I've visited every point of interest in my map, found a fair few places of power so gained extra abilities.

Just killed off the Griffin, about to return it's head to the soldier. Really enjoying it so far.
