I wonder how many of the players that won promotion with Mansfield Cox will try to sign. Perhaps distance could work against him at Torquay, it's not a secret that he has his favourites and I would expect that he would usually try to get them to join him.

I think he's a good manager and comes in for more stick from Mansfield fans than he deserves. I wish him the best of luck.

Are there many of that squad available? Unless he fancies Geohaghon and Hand!

Has anyone thrown a brick through Paul Cox's window or anything yet?

God, I don't miss listening to him. Couldnt watch more than a minute.

Good appointment by Torquay though. He'll make you hard to beat & to be fair to him, the football wasn't THAT bad in the Conference, it was only when we went up that he changed it to the eye gauging toss we had to watch.

Be interesting to see what players he signs though, a lot of the players he signed for us were locally based. Bet he wishes he'd have got the job a month a go to sign Rhead, Beevers etc.

The budget was relatively small. No idea where this "mansfield spent loads" to get out the conference rubbish comes from, although it was probably bigger than all those tiny teams like barrow, Every player on a free transfer and on wages of 500 pw.... A solid defence, experienced keeper and top striker got us promoted. We signed the players to get us out the conference, in the league they were useless and have now all gone back to where they came from. Cox is your manager now and should do well again if he really was that great, just not sure who he would sign, He's got very limited resources.

We spent fucking loads. We had Geohagon, Roberts, Speight, Pilkington and Wright all sat in the stands on 1k or more a week. We paid transfer fee's for Speight and Poku. Godferry fucking Poku, Who Cox fell out with after about 3 weeks. Not to mention Murray and Green who were both being paid 1k+. He seemed to just sign big players from the clubs around us and not play them, In fact he let big Ex go, realised we were shite and then went back and re-signed him for more money than what he was on 2 months before, Then after we played Liverpool, had a barney and he didn't play again.

Not sure who he will bring in, He did bring alot of his mates with him when he was here but the majority have all just signed for new clubs this Summer. Wouldn't surprise me if Howell and Meikle turned up at Plainmoor though.

His style is not pretty on the eye, I just hope you have a good season to make it barable to watch. We had A solid back 4 and goalkeeper with some non league cloggers and a quality striker who netted almost 30!

He'll want all of the following:

A solid, dogs of war back line.
A target man.
A set piece delivery specialist.
A pacy forward who can run the channels.
Lots of spirit and hardwork.
Midfield in advance of the halfway line doesn't really matter.

If he can find the lot Torquay will impress; if not, it may get messy.

However, like Richard Cranium suggested, he does like to faff around with his bigger, more high profile, large earner signings, who barely got a glimpse at Mansfield Town, and it was largely down to the 'run of the mill' hardworking, low profile Conference types: Alan Marriott, John Dempster, Luke Jones, Greg Taylor, Lee Beevers, Anthony Howell, Adam Murray, Louis Briscoe, Lee Stevenson, Adam Chapman, Matt Rhead, added to the obvious standout class of Matt Green that got us promoted.
He had a huge squad and squandered hundreds of thousands on unnecessary players, when the mainly bang average ones got the job done.

I'd like to think that many of those types of players are within the reach of Torquay United. Though we've always been fortunate in our location, bordering the huge catchment areas of The North and The Midlands, to attract players.

Well after listening to Chris "we lost this week, because we've got no money" "we lost this week, because the ref didn't like us" " we lost this week because the grass was to green, sky to blue" Hargreaves, for us listening to Paul Cox was refreshing to say the least, a manager who's said right from the start we do not have a lot finance to work with, but that's fine and we'll get on with it.

Just to answer a post made below this one. Expensive wage signings are going to be , beyond TUFC short-medium term, so us Gulls fans will soon find out whether Cox can wheel and deal, because he's going to have to do that.

Its all internet talk, no one has a clue how much players were on at all or how much we spent.

You must be joking, theyre all at Lincoln! You'll find out if he's a good manager if he's successful again, if not then we got lucky

What isn't a secret is your accounts and how much debt has been accrued over the last few seasons though. Doesn't take a genius to work out you spent a fortune.

If its all Internet talk then why claim that they were on £500pw?

I know for a fact, Speight, Green, Ex, Murray, Pillkington and Wright were all on at least 1k!

From the fans forum last night it appears that our first signing will be an experienced goalkeeper. If it is the keeper rumoured, I'll be impressed, so fingers crossed Cox can get that one over the line soon!

Lewis Price, if the rumours are to be believed.

Price is the rumoured target - remains to be seen whether we can offer the sort of wages he would like though.

Also from the fans forum…:

- Playing budget based on 1800 averages next season. - Happy with this, should certainly be achievable. Infact with the feel-good factor returning (something that will only increase when new signings start coming in), we should be on for over 2000.

- The training ground was not on a lease by the club. - We've spent over £200k on something that we were renting out. Madness. Gordon Sparks today tweeted that Argyle are in talks with us about sharing the facility. Could work well. It's certainly a big enough bit of land.

- Cox wants a 20-man squad and to be the fittest team in the league. - Imagine it's going to be a bit of a shock for Mr. Bowman upon return to pre-season. Happy with this though.

- Most games will be travelled to on the day. - Assume this excludes the likes of Gateshead, Barrow etc but not surprising - we can't afford to.

On the whole, I'm very content with that. The playing budget set is not out of touch. Also get the impression that the club was unbelievably close to folding this summer.

For the first time in three years I'm actually excited about the coming season.

Certainly enthused with what's coming out of our club since the take over. Basing the budgets on an 1,800 average is sensible, I certainly think a plus 2,000 average will be achieved, training ground is nightmare I've been well aware of for some time, thank gord that's going to be sorted, with no academy now, sharing a training ground with Plymouth makes sense.

As for the identify of the goal keeper PC is chasing, the clues are 31 year old, played for Cox before, 6ft 3 in, has international experience. Lewis Price does fit bill, Marriot certainly doesn't, but can our club afford him, that's the problem.

Still expecting a rough ride next season though, take mid table right now. However, it's so refreshing to hear our manager say (in not so many words) our situation isn't ideal, but there's a job to do and we'll get on with it, instead of our previous manager whining on about what he does not have, and rolling out excuse after excuse.

If you sign Price & we don't, I'll be fuming. No offence to Torquay, but he's a far better keeper than playing in the Conference.

Spent the majority of last season at Welling were he scored 11 goals and was their second top scorer in a struggling team (behind Beautyman who got a move to the FL) and then earlier this year he joined Ebbsfleet.

Not sure how he got on there but thats a shrewd signing.

Joined us for the money, how are Torquay affording him?

;)

In all seriousness, it just never worked out for him here. He looked lively in his first game and worked his socks off but never really grabbed the opportunity when it was handed to him. Saying that, our whole squad seemed to just give up. He won't be missed, that's for sure.

He'll probably go and bang a few in for Torquay now.

Thanks for the info. May I suggest to other TUFC fans on here, that as there is a thread for confirmed signings that's where such info should be posted, it's time to let this thread die, as our crisis is for the moment over.
