TPLG CUP 2015​

Previous winners: THIS CHARMING MIKE (2014), CAPTAIN YOSSARIAN (2013)

As briefly mentioned in the rules thread this is a knock-out tournament held in the second half of the season. All those currently participating are automatically entered into the cup. You are not required to do anything different, just continue to pick six scenarios each week as normal and your score will count for both the league and cup. Anyone who is not in the league can still enter the cup if they wish. Just register your interest in this thread before 12pm on Tuesday 30 December so I can enter you into the draw. After the draw is made you'll be able to see what week you'll need to pick six scenarios from.

At the end of Week 19 the draw will be made with the top 16 seeded. Those, if any, not involved in the league will be entered as wild-cards. Depending on numbers, some players will receive a bye in the first round. Example: as it stands there are 36 potential competitors (35 currently in the league plus Cardsfan). In this situation Cardsfan and 7 others will feature in the first round (Week 20), with the four winners joining the remaining 28 in the second round (Week 23).

In the event of a draw, there will be a replay the following week. If you are still tied after the replay, alongside your selections for the next week you will be asked to predict the time of the first goal that week. This will be used as a tiebreaker should you draw again in the second replay (ie whoever is closest to the actual time progresses). [Note: in the final, if the finalists draw there will only be one replay before the tiebreaker is used]

The draw has been made. The top 25 receive byes to the second round, the remaining 9 plus the 5 wild-cards play in the first round.

Difficult ties to call. VILLABOY and KEYLIME are both in the bottom three with the same success rate (.351). The next three are newbies vs unknowns. Game E is the odd one out - last season's TPLG Cup runner-up vs three-time TPLG Champion. If STEVENCC can make it through that game, he would set up a repeat of last season's final in Round 2. LAST REQUEST last played season 5 (finishing 5th) before the cup was introduced, averaging 28.3 in his two seasons while JACKINKY has averaged 26.3 in his two and a half seasons. And then finally two with very similar averages RED DRAGON (26.6) and WINTERBUNNY456 (26.8).

VILLABOY upped his game this week to win his first cup game at the third attempt. A comfortable win for TPLG's longest-serving member sees him set up a second round clash with the league leader JUSTINQPR.
The next four ties were all won by the wild-cards. Outscoring everyone but VILLABOY, ROVERSFAN2001 thrashed his opponent, who happened to be the week's lowest scorer. CIDERHEAD96's opponent dropped out so despite not scoring well, he makes it through to the second round to face SEASHELL, one of the three to have scored less than him this week. Having led from the off thanks to no bookings in the early kick-off, CARDSFAN eased past BLITZBALLER and, avoiding a third defeat out of three in this tournament, LIU won by the same score-line to knock out last year's runner-up.
JACKINKY edged past LAST REQUEST thanks to the goal-fest at White Hart Lane while WINTERBUNNY456, unable to build on her decent score last week, lost comfortably to RED DRAGON.

No major shocks in the first section with all the seeds progressing. The double remains on for league leader JUSTINQPR. He sets up a clash with ZAWESX, who knocks out a quarter-finalist from last season to win his first cup game at the third attempt. Finalist in the inaugural cup, CHRISMCFC edges out TOMMYTEZ, who made the semi-finals last year. NICKTHEDAGGER makes round 3 for the third successive season, he'll be looking to avoid making a third consecutive defeat at that stage too.

An upset! Wild-card ROVERSFAN2001 inflicts a first Round 2 defeat on fifth seed TONY CLIFTON to progress. He'll play GUNNERSON with another of last year's semi-finalists bowing out. MR ELMO'S has a shocker on his cup debut, allowing me to pick up my first win. Cheers. SEASHELL eases past wild-card CIDERHEAD96 to move into the third round for the second consecutive season.

Another shock here as number 3 seed and second-placed VEGGIE LEGS is beaten by wild-card CARDSFAN. He's the sixth of last season's final 8 to exit the tournament early. Having made the semi-finals in the inaugural cup, MARKPVFC instead follows last season's example as he exits in the second round. A decent win for DONTBRINGBERTIE on his cup debut. THE ONE AND ONLY makes his way into the next round with his second win in four cup games - both coming against KILLERBLAZE. Although absent LIU follows up knocking out last season's runner-up in the first round by beating defending champion THIS CHARMING MIKE.

For the first time JACKINKY fails to make it into the third round with SAMMELS picking up his first win at the third attempt. Doing the same, TOMMY_B knocks out NILSSON, who can perhaps feel unlucky with his scoring being enough to have beaten everyone but the player he was matched with. MARKFACE and LEEWILSON remain without a cup win as SIDESHOW BOB and RED DRAGON both make it into the third round in a second straight season.

NICKTHEDAGGER and ROVERSFAN2001 are safely through whatever happens. JUSTINQPR trails by 4 points but can overturn the deficit if Liverpool avoid defeat later. Nothing separates me and SEASHELL currently but the Southampton/Liverpool game will decide the tie. He needs a Southampton win, a draw or a Liverpool win will see me progress.

This is the first season wild-cards have entered. The cup was introduced towards the end of Season 6 (2012/13) where I crammed it all in the last 6 weeks just to see how it would go. I'm pretty sure I mentioned the idea of wild-cards in last season's thread but there were no takers.

It's been a bad couple of weeks in the league for JUSTINQPR but it's not all bad as he progresses in the cup. A Liverpool win sees him come from behind to defeat ZAWESX. In the inaugural cup, CHRISMCFC knocked out NICKTHEDAGGER 44-22 at this stage on route to the final. There will be no repeat of that this season, with the latter triumphing to make it into the quarter-finals for the first time. Wild-card ROVERSFAN2001's cup run continues as he sees off mid-table GUNNERSON to set up a quarter-final clash with me. Southampton's defeat putting me through at SEASHELL's expense.

As already decided earlier, TOMMY_B edges past seventh seed SAMMELS while RED DRAGON narrowly beats SIDESHOW BOB to avenge his first round defeat to him in the inaugural cup.

THE ONE AND ONLY started strongly and took an 18 point lead courtesy of Arsenal's win and Giroud's injury time goal in the early kick-off. With three of their selections cancelling each other out, DONTBRINGBERTIE had a mountain to climb. He could only make up the deficit if Tottenham won 2-0 and Villa didn't concede against QPR. It wasn't to be as Burnley held Spurs to a no-score draw and although irrelevant by then, Villa conceded within 7 minutes of their game.

Having picked opposing scenarios - Leicester (JustinQPR) vs Swansea (me) and Palace (Justin) vs West Brom (me) - Justin took a slender 10-8 advantage from the 3pm kick-offs. In the late game, Chelsea held on to win 1-0 giving Justin an unassailable 38-8 lead. We both scored maximum points from our remaining picks which made it at least look respectable from my perspective.

Semi final 2 to be played Week 34 (Saturday 25, Sunday 26 & Wednesday 29 April).

With RED DRAGON having gone AWOL, THE ONE AND ONLY's job was made much easier.

Having finished runner-up in the league three times, he'll no doubt be keen to shake the nearly man tag. Top seed and debutant JUSTINQPR stands in his way. Despite seeing his title challenge crumble, it's been a good first season for him and he'll be looking to end strongly with a podium finish and the cup on the line.

Final to be played Week 37 (Saturday 16, Sunday 17, Monday 18 & Wednesday 20 May).

Delighted to have won the cup. After finishing 2nd for 3 seasons, it's great to actually win something.

It's been a disappointing league campaign .. But i'd rather win the cup and finish outside the top 3..so in a way this has been an improvement on previous seasons

Thanks for running this again Munkiki. The cup was is a great idea, especially to keep people who have fallen behind in the league, motivated

I'll be back next season as always to defend the cup
