£1.8m is a bargain these days? Not to say he's not a good signing, but if that qualifies as a bargain we have no chance. He had a fairly middling record in L2 and then the first couple of seasons at Brentford. To go from that to £27m is some progression.
Honestly, even considering the potential impact of covid on transfer fees, anything below £5 million feels like an absolute bargain at the top end of this level now, whereas 10 years ago it was rare to see Championship clubs spend that at all. The market is ridiculous now and just gets worse by the year.

Anything below £5m is a bargain? Because we're not going to be paying £5m for a player before we get into a new stadium or we get a massive windfall from a player sale. Not even close to it.

Remember teams only get £7m in TV money at this level. Not all of us get the advantage of parachute payments!

Yeah our transfer record remains £1.8m from 2001, well unless this Bayliss guy takes us to the Prem and plays for England, etc.

I think Darren twatting Carter might even be our second highest. The minge.

We've signed Tyler Walker from Forest for an undisclosed fee. Pretty happy with that one, was a 1 in 2 striker in League One last season and is still only 23. We were in for him last summer but think we wanted him on a perm and Forest only wanted to loan. Robins gets his man.
Any idea on the fee?

Good signing, though. Done the business in L2, then in L1 (admittedly only half a season) but you'd fancy him to score goals in the Championship. His all round game probably isn't Championship standard yet but his finishing is. Not going to ping one in the top bin or create something out of nothing but give him a sniff in the box and he'll put it away.

Luton have confirmed the signings of James Bree and Tom Lockyer on permanent deals. Two more players and we're done I'd say.

I see Jones has said that Bree has “shown ambition” to come here which I think is code for “taken a massive paycut”!

Glen Murray on loan?

A cheaper version of Deeney really to come on if we have to go long and need some physical presence up front.

I think the plan is for Gray and or Suarez to be the man up front.

Great to see him getting his career back on track. Was brilliant for us, Villa was a bad move but who’s turning that kind of money down?
Well we're certainly not paying him his £20kpw wage, probably not even half that!

In the article on the club website it’s seems to insinuate that Villa released him.

“with James Bree joining permanently following his release by from Aston Villa”

Must be a mistake surely? If it isn’t we have done bloody well there. I assume that Villa have some agreement over any future transfer otherwise it’s ridiculous from them.

Didn't rate the guy myself but he might be able to do a job.

I think he's a good L1 player who will have the occasional decent game in this league.

I think that may be the best we can hope for with the wages we can afford to pay. We’ll never be in the market for proven sought-after players so we just have to trust Ainsworth’s instinct for a rough diamond.

Yeah, he's worth a gamble. Building an affordable team who you can keep hold of should you get relegated, which allows you to have another crack at promotion is probably sensible considering your resources.

Ainsworth has had players punching above their weight since he's been there so it probably doesn't matter what these players have done previously.

... or by being lucky that the season ended, voted for the reason to end; when it did and they were propelled into the playoffs on a dodgy formula? More than punching above their weight!

Every club would do the same in their position.

They competed at the top end of L1 all season with a budget that was probably smaller than some L2 sides.

Josh Ginnelly loaned to Hearts for the season, contract up in the summer.

That was a successful project.

that's obviously true, but it wasn't only our decision to end the season.

Anyway. Triple signing day:

Daryl Horgan, as mentioned above
ex-Blackpool and Man City youth keeper Curtis Anderson
Ryan Tafazolli (ex-Posh and Hull City).

again, not signings to rock the division, but probably as good as we can expect.

We have finally completed the signing of goalkeeper Vikor Johanson on a 2 year deal from Leicester City.
It's been in the pipeline for about a month so at least we have saved some wages, he will compete for the No1 spot with Jamal Blackman.

How Tafazolli keeps getting teams above L2 is beyond me - for Mansfield, Peterborough or Hull, I've never been impressed with him.

No, me neither.

I actually have heard of this one! In a particularly bored moment of lockdown I took a look at league 1 left backs we might be able to get in the door and he was the one that looked a) likely affordable and b) of the type we like.

He looks to be an attacking athletic type of fullback compared to Potts so might fit in better here. Just glad we have a left back through the door as for me Potts was one of our weakest links last season.

I know it was only the Conference, but he's the best left-back I've seen play for Barrow. Looked like he had all the attributes to go far, and he's been climbing the leagues each year since. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in the Wales squad this season.

Alan Nixon reporting that we’ve finally signed Ben Sheaf from Arsenal. Season long loan with an option to buy for 750k. Not really sure how these options work, and whether that means that we are obliged to buy him or whether we just get first dibs at the end of the season.

Reports suggesting we've finally won the race to sign centre back Ben Gibson from Burnley, with most reports suggesting that it's going to be a season-long loan while one or two suggest it's going to be a permanent. Either way, we sorely needed another centre back after constant injury troubles at the back last season and with there still being some chance of Godfrey leaving before the window shuts.

EDIT: Our local sources confirm it as a season-long loan with an option to buy for £8 million should we be promoted.

Us, Watford and a few Prem sides are being linked with French defender Jean-Claude Billong, who plays for Serie B side US Salernitana.
Don't know anything about him, but if Watford and some Prem teams are interested we probably have little chance of getting him ourselves.

Looks like we made an enquiry about Ferdy Druijf at AZ but it was knocked back and he's signed a new long term deal. Hope this is a sign that we're looking to look abroad more often.
