Southampton have more first XI players in than Villa did, but there's a shred of comfort that we aren't the only ones who got walloped at home.

Some shameful performances and results. Newport I expected better from as they do usually give Premier League teams a decent game in recent seasons.

I’d of loved Luke Armstrong to sign on here after his loan spell last season, must’ve scored most of his goals inside the 6 yard box for us, has the knack to just toe in or head from close range.
Yep. All of his goals were scored from inside the 18 yard box, and I reckon 14 of his 15 were scored from no further out than 8 yards. It's one of the reasons why he worked so well with Rhys Oates. Two very different strikers who never made the same run, never got in each other's way, to the benefit of both of them.

Aye even if ultimately you get smashed it feels like a couple of our fellow L2 clubs have just been happy to roll over and have their bellies tickled. Not really good enough as you can at least make these teams know they’re in a physical war.

A trip to Burnley in R3. That'll do nicely, thank-you!

But they can’t have been better then the likes of Leicester or Spurs who you got results against, or even Man City who you gave a good game?

Very surprised at this result, nearly put you in my acca as well!

I think they were far better than Spurs and Leicester. Diallo, Ward-Prowse and Redmond took the Michael. They were very good on the ball, quick of thought and squeezed us tirelessly on the few occasions they lost possession. Perfect playing surface helped them too. We made too many changes from Saturday. Townsend didn't have a great game either, which isn't like him. On to Salford. Hopefully we won't have a hangover.

It's a good job Carlisle weren't in round 2 then.

The difference between the levels of the teams is ridiculous now. For example, Caleb Chukwuemeka, a kid who wasn't even starting for Villa cost them £300,000 - our record signing is £20,000... Hourihane's wage is the same as our entire playing budget.

Teams get dicked 6-0, 7-0 against teams at the same level - when every player is an established Premier League player or a youth international, sometimes they're just gonna turn it on. I'd say that any club in our division would've been absolutely trounced by that Villa side. The only thing for us that made it worse was it was live in Sky...

I didn’t make it to Shrewsbury but by all accounts we played very well. A fantastic draw for us in getting near neighbours Burnley away. A regular and eventful local derby in the dark times for both clubs in the 80s but not played them since the early 90s. Really looking forward to it. The northern and eastern parts of Rochdale have loads of Burnley fans living in them so most of us know a few of them, will add a bit of spice to things. The part of the borough I grew up in I’d say most of the non Dale match going football fans (as opposed to arm chair Premier League fans) I knew of were Burnley fans so however unlikely it is it’d be nice to get a result to put to bed some piss taking suffered as a kid .

It does seem like the Premier League clubs are putting out stronger teams in this competition this year... not sure why but noticed the Arsenal side that dicked West Brom at the Hawthorns last night included mostly first team regulars.

Seemed to be.
In contrast, Newcastle completely changed their side. Which is madness. They are not going to challenge for European spots and a decent run would give them a chance of silverware for the first time in 60 odd years.
I just don't understand this obsession with the Premier League.

To be fair haven't got European football so may as well go all out.

Exactly. Surely teams not in Europe can afford to play another 6-7 games in this over the course of a season? It’s a trophy and European football potentially on the line. It’s probably why Arsenal went strong against WBA reserves given for once they aren’t in Europe. Cannot understand the mid table Prem clubs mentality to this competition.

It has been said that a team's name is on Trophy before a ball has been kicked.
This season will Premiership Brentford's name be on the EFL Cup?
Last round they had 2nd round home draw against League 2 opposition [FGR] and in 3rd round they host another League 2 team [Oldham].
Their fans must be rubbing their hands in glee.

Mike Ashley. Simple as that. Since he's been in, I would guess that Newcastle have the worst record in both cups out of all PL teams because it's only the PL that makes him any money.

Supporting a mid table or yoyo premier league club must be a bit dull. Just plodding on season after season to just stay up. If I was a fan of say Newcastle, or Palace or whoever I’d rather see my team challenge to win a cup every few years and get relegated than settle for just making up the numbers in the league.

The Championship teams are even worse. So many of them make 11 changes.

Watching the highlights - is Townsend always that bad at his near post? So many of the Saints goals were saveable.

No they all would not. Beaten yes, maybe comfortably beaten, but I’d still expect a L2 team to at least attempt to make it difficult for the opponents. But to put in such an inept, gutless, scared display like that was disappointing. All apart from Zanzala were being far too nice. At least he actually showed a bit of aggression and made their players think they were in a game. If the rest had done similar it might have been a bit more respectable, if not in terms of score line then at least in terms of being competitive

Villa have waived their 45% gate receipts which presumably goes to Barrow. I know it's pennies for a club like Villa but it's still a decent touch.
Good to see Villa doing it. The bigger clubs in the PL have done it for a while now, presumably as middling clubs get richer then they too start to see it as money they don't really need to collect. Doesn't quite make up for some of the other things the Premier League is guilty of but it's something.

Is he picking the side as well now?

No you are right, Barrow are the worst team in the league and everyone else would've tried harder.

Didn’t say that did I. Just think they were naive in the way they went about it and showed Villa far too much respect and fear. In fact me thinking barrow should be doing better against Villa is far and away from saying they are the worst team in the league.

Perhaps that was part of the deal, you play shit and let us win easily and we will give you our share of the gate money.
