Although don't they always have a strong start and then tank?
Yeah. We are a summer season team. When it's warm we are amazing but as soon as it starts to get cold our season is over. It's no coincidence that our form tends to pick up in April/May again.

Back from Salford and just about calmed down after a game ruined by the ref, one linesman and the fourth official.

Sure we were poor, but (as far as I know) the fourth official didn't intervene when there was an obvious hand ball inside their box by one of their defenders, nor did he get the ref to bring back play when Salford continually fouled our lad Ogbu all over the pitch.

Didn't like Salford before the game, my disdain hasn't changed since visiting the place.

Why was that goal disallowed?
One of the umpteen new rules. No attacking player allowed in the wall. Ludicrous.
I'd be fuming if i was a Grimsby fan but others will say rules are rules.

The point most are pissed off about is that it was the 4th official who gave it which is not supposed to happen, ref gave the goal and play was about to restart when the 4th official intervened.

Too many new rules this season and still seems a lot of confusion around it. The sub going off nearest side never seems implemented and the injury restarts are still all over the place.

I like the new keeper passing it in the box rule mind... mainly because it helps us with the press we do at home when opponents do it!

Surely if the 4th official spots it after the referee doesn’t that’s his job to point it out though?

Cheltenham were the better team, but we really shouldn't have lost that but it was our own fault. Missed a couple of sitters, and we gifted them at least one of the goals. We aren't very good in the middle of the park which is no surprise as our midfield is crap, but we're certainly up there in both boxes, just need to cut out the odd mistake and be a bit more clinical, but in the 4th division I'm sure it's the same for most teams.

Not to mention the 4th official piped up after the bench of the leagues golden boys booted off at him.

Not only is he in the wall, he backs into them to make way for the shot which could also be deemed a foul. All players would have sat down at the start of the season to go over the new rules so not sure why Grimsby fans are so agitated?

We also ask what's the point of the 4th official if he doesn't get involved. He does for once, to make the correct decision and we're up in arms.

Looks bad on the ref for not spotting it himself but it's absolutely fair for the 4th official to point out a clear cut decision like that if it's not been given.

It’s not the offence that’s riled people. It’s the inconsistency and the method in which it was reached, like nothing I’ve seen before.

For example, Salford players trudging off as subs from the other side of the pitch. What happened to the rule of leaving the pitch by the closest way possible? Why didn’t the ref pull Hess out of the wall either before it was taken?

The inconsistency doesn’t sit well with me at all and it’s set a precedent for the 4th official to get involved whenever he (or the opposition bench) pleases.

It's two things really, the length of time it took after the goal was initially given and everybody was ready for the restart. Then the fact it's completely inconsistent for the 4th official to get involved as heavily as he did here. If he is getting involved this time then why isn't he when there were plenty of decisions which didn't go our way? At the end of the day it's the kind of inconsistency we expect at this level I guess. I've got no problem with 4th officials intervening in theory, in fact I'd encourage it, it's just such a rare thing to see it's annoying. It should be completely black and white, either they get consulted or they don't, not whenever they feel like it.

If the Grimsby players hadn't taken so much time over their celebrations, the match would have re-started and the goal would have counted.

Aye I'm not disagree with the decision, it was correct to disallow the goal.

The contentious issue is how the decision was made. Ref and linesman were happy, goal stood, as Salford are about to restart the game the 4th official calls the ref over and talks to him and its disaowed.

Why didn't he speak to him straight away, don't they have ear pieces and microphones to talk these days?

It looks like the 4th official was influenced by the Salford bench over the decision not that he saw it himself, but who knows.

Of course the 4th official can advise the ref just like the assistants, but it's almost like he was reviewing VAR for a few minutes before calling the ref over!!

Anyhow right decision reached just wrong way to reach it and as I said we didn't deserve anything from the game as we weren't good enough, just a shame that a refs decision is what the talking is about and not yet again how poor and one dimensional we are.

9 games in and i've still yet to see a single Salford fan comment on anything.
Pretty sure one was around pre-season ?

What game were you watching, mate? We deserved at least a point. We must have had about 60-65% possession in the second half. As Clarkey said, it was very reminiscent of a Hurst defeat in the non-league days. While we didn't create a massive amount of clear cut chances, we easily did enough to warrant a point. Absolute worldie of a save, a few last minute blocks/tackles from their CBs, a goal ruled off and a freak goal from them to win it. On another night we win that 2 or 3-0 and we aren't even having this conversation. I thought we were very patient on the ball at times last night, and just lacked that bit of spark. Ogbu was poor in a match he needed to turn up in as we were at our most threatening when we got in behind them. Unfortunately, their CBs were the best two players on the pitch and Hanson didn't get a sniff. Wright should have come on instead of Vernam, was crying out for him at that point.

Cook's freekick was quality, it's a shame that it'll get forgotten. Where was that 4th official when Crewe's GK was halfway to the penalty spot saving Hanson's pen the other week?!

Sorry but forcing one save from the keeper in the final minute against a side as poor as they were is not worthy of anything.

We can pass the ball about around the back 4 all day but it's not going to win games, as soon as we got in the final third we lacked any ideas.

Good performance by Macc tonight in a tight 1-1 draw. Another change of system, this time with a quicker more mobile front line and high press from midfield, which allowed us to brake forwards dangerously at times. Shame we couldn't win but it at least stops a run of poor performances.

How's Conor Kirby been getting on for you?

To say we didn’t deserve anything is to say Salford deserved to win which is a ridiculous comment. Most possession, most shots, 9 (!!) corners. We deserved a point at the very least.

I guess in such an incident you could argue what were the assistants doing - not watching I guess which seems to be a issue throughout he leagues.

As for the sub rule - totally agree - its hardly enforced!

Agree about the substitution thing. In fact I made the same point in the refereeing thread.

Going off the video posted further up the page, Hessenthaler is in front of the wall which is fine - it's Green who only joins the wall at the last second who is at fault. So not much the ref could have done about it before the goal went in, however he should have disallowed it straight away afterwards.

IMO I don't mind the 4th official correcting errors like that when it's so clear cut - it's not like he's overruling the ref on something subjective like a penalty. Obviously others disagree which I can also understand.
