You do, Chris Martin is a brilliant song writer.

I guess subjectiveness and musical taste doesn't come into it? Don't like them, you must be a musical snob.

Martin has written some good songs, mainly at the beginning of Coldplay's existence (A Rush Of Blood To The Head was their first and last very good album in my view) but to call him a brilliant song writer is taking things a bit far.

I think there's a reason they've consistently achieved such huge global success writing and performing their own stuff, arguably the biggest band of this century.

Personally I'm a big fan, they write some great melodies, and I'm not much of a mainstream music fan, but I always find myself fighting Coldplay's corner. Viva La Vida was a very good album, Mylo Xyloto had some good moments and the live shows were incredible, not given the last album much time. Hopefully this album will rekindle my love for them and it'll be the return of their fantastic stadium gigs. Heard they're headlining Glasto once again where they always put on a show.

Yeah it's basically pop these days, but it's always different and they do it well. They still throw it back to the old days with a few tracks.

Of course there is a reason, they're very popular. But the link between quality and popularity has always been a tenuous one, particularly in the music industry. And Coldplay (in my opinion) are a prime example of that. Good but not that good.

Never liked stadium gigs and never will. Main reason is that, generally but not always, only big commercial artists get to play stadiums. Another reason is that you're too far from the stage. Then there's also the problem of a 'Greatest Hits set list' whenever the artists are playing in front of thousands.

As for Coldplay I'm with Pagnell. Decent debut album, an excellent second(although it's not exactly my cup of tea), and a half decent 3rd which has a couple of strong tracks but overall it's not consistent enough. Still, the biggest downside to it is that it was heavily influenced by U2, and I don't like the idea of an artist being influenced in a big way by another artist. At least try to be subtle.

I don't think they've produced anything of note since then, or perhaps nothing to write home about is a better description.
