So, both of these teams are through to the last 16. This one decides who finishes 1st and 2nd.

Russia are in the best position as anything other than a defeat puts them top. But then, does it really matter, given it’ll probably be Portugal or Spain in the last 16? Kind of a pick your poison moment.

So, do Russia keep their momentum rolling or do the stingy Uruguay have enough to stop them and grind out another win?

It's my biggest pet hate in football. If a keeper is going to use a wall to defend a free kick, then he's got to trust it. Otherwise it's completely useless.

But how often do you see keepers taking a step to the side, leaving a gap open for the free kick taker to exploit? It happens so often.

I don't think Akinfeev could have done very much about that one. The deflection completely changed the direction of the shot, which was going miles wide beforehand.

People can say that Uruguay haven been impressive or good to watch, but 3 wins from 3 in what could have been a tricky group and 3 clean sheets, impressive. Uruguay V Portugal would be a great last 16 tie.

But seriously, Russia were second best today and the South American Italians fully deserved their win. Still, Russia beating two admittedly poor sides was still a minor miracle if you saw their pre WC friendly games - they were so poor I fully expected them to only get a lucky draw or something.

Also, and tbf to Uruguay, I thought they adopted a different game plan today, one which was a pleasure to watch at times. I can only hope they don't revert to their usual catennaccio (did I spell it right?) footy.

Nearly (Catenaccio with one "n"). Impressive as always the Urus in D#. In 2010 they also had 3 clean sheets in the group stages and went all the way to the semi finals then and lost 2-3 against the Netherlands (where are they this time? ) and finally ended up 4th ( lost 2-3 against us).
Uruguay vs Portugal in the 1/8 finals would be interesting
