Trump and Clinton win, with the former taking all 50 available delegates and Clinton taking a larger than expected 43 of 57. Cruz and Rubio come second and third, basically in a dead heat, and you have to think one of them really needs to drop out ASAP if the other wants to really challenge Trump.

Nights gotta belong to Clinton and Trump and leave the others with some catching up to do!

Carson just adding more wounds to a clearly dead campaign and Kasich needing Fabrice Muamba style CPR if his is to stay alive. Will Cruz and Rubio agree that one should step down to give them the best chance of defeating Trump!? Doubt it as both have had fairly even nights from what I can tell so will both think they are the man to challenge.

In a perverse way I'm quite enjoying the 'Donald Trump Show' as much as I think he's vile.

The prisoner dilemma. They both know that if the other drops out they will have a good chance to go on and win the nomination. But if neither does, Trump will most likely go on to win.

Genuinely think Cruz would be worse than Trump though.

Haven't seen last night's debate yet but Trump's use of 'liar Ted' and 'little Rubio' is superb stuff

Kansas, Kentucky (Republican only), Louisianna, Maine (R only) and Nebraska all vote today.
On Dem side, Louisiana will be a Hillary whitewash, and Kansas and Nebraska are both caucuses and a bit of an unknown. Bernie won the Oklahoma caucus and all three are fairly similar in demographics and region so will be interesting to see how it plays.

Big big win on the cards.

Can somebody with know how explain to me how the delegates and superdelegates in particular work? I see there's still quite a few Northern states left that Sanders would look to win, quite a few in the mid-areas too which could be close between him and Clinton amongst the voting public. But it seems that Clinton has huge support amongst these super/non-super delegates that Sanders doesn't.

Basically, how important is that?

There's an explanation of the delegate system from this post a few pages back:

So Trump and Sanders seem to have run out even bigger winners than anyone imagined from what I can tell

Trying to understand how these primaries work and still failing (I think)...
  • Depending on the % votes at each primary the candidates get assigned delegates that can't change their minds
  • There are some 'super delegates' who can choose who they support and change their minds
  • Some states have more delegates to give than others
  • At the end the candidate with the most delegates gets put forward as the presidential candidate? Or is there some other super-big conference where that is decided and having more delegates just helps?

From what I understand, the super-delegates do not have to commit to to a candidate until the end of the race. Clinton has a lot more support from the superdelegates, but I'd imagine if Sanders won the popular vote, then the superdelegates would flip-flop to Bernie. If Bernie won the popular vote, only to be denied the nomination by a small group of superdelegates with an absurd amount of power, it's pretty much sticking the middle finger up to democracy and the ideals of the Democratic Party.

I can see the point of the superdelegates in a dead heat, but otherwise there should be outrage if they don't go along with what the public voted for.

The democracy issue is one which struck me as concerning, but the explanation makes sense. Bit pointless to make them pick their candidate now if they can change it and likely will do if Sanders wins popular vote.

Just like a Trump win is going to have very profound consequences for the future of the Republican party, a Sanders popular vote win but a Clinton super delegate backed 'victory' will very likely cause a similar fallout in the Democratic party.

Trump is only doing this to promote his brand and I bet even he can't believe how successful he's been. Its so scary just how daft a lot of Americans are to follow his tripe (which he changes his mind about constantly anyway).

I definitely think the people who write Sanders off for being unelectable are blind to the proportion of the American people who harbour a strong dislike for Clinton. And we're not talking only about Tea Party nutters here. She is not seen as trustworthy or reliable at all.

I find it odd that Sanders has struggled so badly with African Americans. Is there a convincing theory about this? Is Hilary benefitting from a post-Bill Clinton dividend?
