Just have to look at last night's England ladies game.

The decisions were probably right but would anyone have complained had the offside goal been given and the penalty not so (didn't matter in the end) but both were pretty tight and certainly not clear errors either way.

I just saw a MLS VAR feature on Sky Sports presented by Howard Webb where he was watching DC United play someone. During the game DC scored a goal, but there was a question about it being offside, so up it goes to VAR. 3 of them (at least) were sat in that room looking at the footage on the screens and their decision? ‘Why don’t you have a look ref..’

It’s the equivalent of saying “We don’t have a fucking clue about the offside rule, help us out maybe, pal?”

I'm certain that that is just political - to allow the on-field referee to make the final decision. It will soon change because of the time currently being taken to make a decision.

Appreciate this doesn't affect our level (yet?) but what are people's thoughts about VAR?

Technology used to determine matters of fact (did it cross the line for example) instantly have been a fantastic addition to the game.

Technology being used to the nth degree to determine subjective matters by scrutinising super slo-mo replays from every angle imaginable for 5 minutes cannot be good for the game in any way.

It seems to me that the whole purpose of VAR (correcting obvious errors) has been lost in the implementation.

Every single goal is being reviewed
The tail is wagging the dog with offsides now being left to VAR
Some of the penalty decisions at the WWC have been dreadful
The scrutiny on keepers movements for penalties at the WWC has been farcical
Numerous handball decisions made at the 2018 World Cup and Champions League have been shambolic
The list could go on.

Sport should be about emotion and in my opinion, VAR in its current format is hugely detrimental.

I agree with all of that. I would hope that VAR is restricted to the suggestions you pinpointed. The cancelling of Ellen White's second goal the other night was taking the slide-rule to ridiculous levels. Spoils the game as you say.
