Good on Broadfoot for putting that disrespectful pillock in his place.
He should show more respect to the Country that pays him Millions of pounds.
West Brom are paying his salary, not England.

The Wednesday
Broadfoot once got injured by a boiled egg in a microwave I think that covers his IQ.

I'm not keen on McLean either as he should keep his political beliefs out of the limelight to avoid this shit.

The troubles are a dark part of the history of both nations to be honest and hopefully one day we will see this sort of stuff consigned to the bin.

There's only so long we as a nation can apologise for a history we had very little impact on.

I'm amazed that he has the mental capacity to string sentences together.

I have a pretty damn good understanding of the events of the Northern Irish conflict thanks. I've had relatives who fought against the IRA, hence why views on the subject are strong

Yeah, strong and clearly biased.

What about all of the unarmed civilians killed by IRA terrorist attacks in Britain? Innocent parties died on both sides, soon to forget that are we?

I know innocent parties on both sides died? I'm not forgetting any of those who lost their lives, far from it. I have family members on both sides on the community. I was merely pointing out McCleans reasoning for his actions. So don't try put that spin on it again.

Not sure what sort of sad upbringing you've had but to intentionally turn away from a flag during the national anthem is considered disrespectful by most

For a man who is paid a very good wage by the country he lives and works in, yes, I think he should show more respect to the country who made him what he is today.

Sad upbringing? sounds like your the one with the sad upbringing. Encouraging the actions of Broadfoot just goes to show that your a bit of a bigot who encourages sectarianism. People like you are exactly why Northern Ireland struggles to progress. How has England made him what he is today? what an idiotic comment. McClean is where he's at today because he worked his socks off in the League of Ireland for Derry. Just because someone gets paid the British pound doesn't mean they have to recognise the Queen or show respect to a national anthem. At least McClean is honest, unlike half of the English team who pretend they give a shit.

The Irony

Look in the mirror pal, you're views are as biased as mine. Anyone who has an opinion on this conflict will have a bias view on it for whatever argument they make.

My original post was for calling you out for only mentioning the Bloody Sunday incident, there were innocent casualties on both sides, so you can't use just one incident to use for your argument and disregard the other. Both Bloody Sunday and the IRA terrorist attacks in England were tragadies, and is something I pray neither country will have to suffer again. We both obviously have families and friends that have been affected by what happened those many years ago.

Sad upbringing? sounds like your the one with the sad upbringing. Encouraging the actions of Broadfoot just goes to show that your a bit of a bigot who encourages sectarianism.

Yeah, you can fuck off with these half-arsed sort of comments right now. I've repeatedly stated my reason for why I dislike James McLean, it has nothing to do with sectarianism.

McClean is where he's at today because he worked his socks off in the League of Ireland for Derry. Just because someone gets paid the British pound doesn't mean they have to recognise the Queen or show respect to a national anthem. Uh, tired of repeating myself now. Coming to England has made James McLean who he is, if not he would still be probably working part time and earning a couple of hundred £ per week playing for Derry or whoever in Ireland. He has a decent amount of fans I would say, many of them who are young. He is in a profession where, like it or not, he is expected to set an example to such an audience. For a country that has gave him everything; money; a home; a job that most of us could only dream of doing; then yes, he should be more respectful. I would expect the same of any English player who went to play in Northern Ireland too.

Where have I been biased? You mentioned McClean, so I stated his reasoning for not wearing a poppy. No, not everyone has a biased view, just goes to show how much you know.

Again, why would I mention anything else other than Bloody Sunday? we're talking about James McClean, so I mentioned his issues with him wearing a poppy. It's not a thread about The Troubles.

You said "good on Kirk Broadfoot" for displaying sectarian abuse towards James McClean. Need I say more. Anyone with a bit of sense would acknowledge how backwards it is.

This isn't normal circumstances though? have you read anything I've said? stop being so ignorant. Just because someone makes a living in England doesn't mean they should acknowledge the queen/anthem/whatever else

I didn't realise living in England, or being a UK citizen like James McClean, tied you inextricably to the state and the actions of the establishment. Does that mean I have to uncritically support the armed forces, too? And as a public sector worker, I actually get paid with taxpayers money -- it seems like I'm a far bigger 'hypocrite' than James McClean.

Broadfoot and McLean could do with their heads banging together. There should be no place for this within football.

McLean has every right not to sing the national anthem. What he shouldn't be doing though is provoking controversy by publicly making a scene by turning his back to the anthem. He should've been far more mature and should've respected the anthem without singing it.

Showing respect should mean tolerating the anthem. If he was to sing the anthem, he'd be told to forcibly accept the anthem and I believe that forcible acceptance of something against anyone is incorrect. But he should tolerate and respect other people's right to sing the anthem of their homeland without all this melodrama.

Kirk Broadfoot is just a tit, his contribution wasn't necessary and he therefore has been given a richly deserved ban. He is no hero and neither is McLean. Personally I'd bang their heads together and tell them to get on with their job.

why should he respect it or even tolerate in those circumstances (or ever, really)? it's a backwards tribute to both an antiquated institution and the ouevre of a nation that has until relatively recently prided itself on colonialism and imperialism. in fact, that was almost our entire raison d'etre and we're still struggling to redefine our national identity in a meaningful sense in the modern age. if anything, mcclean's protest is a good thing for the uk going forward (in whatever state it exists in the future) because it opens up the discourse again: why is that song our anthem, why are we singing it at football grounds, what is the purpose of a national anthem, why are tolerance and respect feted as defining values of contemporary britain when we're still yet to address structural inequality adequately, etc, etc.

I too, am staunchly opposed to the outdated monarchy, the national anthem (which I will never sing), taxpayers money contributing to the repairs of the constitutional monarch's residencies and I believe that we should be a Republic like our forward-thinking American, French and German counterparts but there is just no place for any of this shite in football. I actually don't even know why the anthem was even played in the first place which baffles me still.

There is a time and a place however for this very reasonable (even if the media would shoot it down in an instant) debate but to me it isn't on the football pitch and I don't want any political shite in our football. That also goes for any anthem glorifying a constitutional or ruling Head of State as well.

Agree 100% with this

"No political shite in our football" - are you suggesting anthems shouldn't be played before club games?

As for other people saying he "turned his back" on the anthem/flag. He didn't. He turned to the side. Very different. It was McClean who was respectfully opting out of the anthem.
