Yeah it's hard to believe a child would willingly wear a Charlton Athletic scarf.

Not in this day and age anyway.

Well I like Charlton! Maybe it's cause two of the best keepers ive seen live also played for them and we've only come across them once or twice.

Maybe that'll change next season though... *Raises Fist*

Of course it won't, the 6 points you're likely to take from us will endear us to you even more.

Do Gillingham fans even get electricity in their caravans now?

Essentially, yes. They could pump Man Utd 4-0 and the most exciting part of their day would still be watching the 17:12 to Dartford pull in.

In fairness to Charlton fans, the protests have been absolutely superb and they should be commended for not letting their club just roll over and die.

They'll be back soon, with new owners and directors hopefully.

Indeed, we should all have sympathy for clubs that are in turmoil, and we should do all we can to help and assist them.

Such as travelling to support Brighton in their hour in need in '97?

Or perhaps raising money for Swindon in 2000 to help pay for their academy squad to travel abroad for some tournament? (or something along those lines)

Of course, we only broke the mould when it came to Gillingham! Do me a favour.

It's how times and personnel change I guess.

I went to the Valley and helped with the tidying up of the stadium before you moved back in.

Now I wouldn't piss on the place if it was on fire.

Gillingham fans in trying to create a rivalry with a random club shocker.

We get the same bizarre treatment as well, although I think that nonsense has somewhat faded.

For the record, I quite like Charlton, friendly enough place and easy for me to get to from my gaff.

Swindon fans in commenting on something they know absolutely nothing about shocker.

Fair enough.

We've done this before anyway, you believe what you believe as do I, no point boring the rest of the sub-section going over it again.

I would, because it wouldn't put the fire out but it would make it smell of hot wee.

Would make you feel right at home I guess.

Can someone just bring me up to speed on the apparent beef the Gills fans have on here with Charlton?

I like Charlton. They aren't so keen on us but never had a problem with them at all.
Also, their fans on here are a pretty decent lot on the most part.

Back when Gillingham were having financial issues, Charlton were in the Premier League and advertised themselves in the Medway area "Come see Premier League stars!" and all that. Also laying on buses from there to the Valley on matchdays.

I can't say I like them, but I don't dislike them - it's just fun to poke at them since we're neighbours and all, and every Millwall fan knows Charlton fans and vice versa.

They weren't actually in the Prem when it started - it's not even that they advertised in the Medway area in general, it was more the fact that they had fans who came to potentially our last ever home game (financial issues as you say) back in the mid 90s and handed out leaflets telling us to go and watch them when our club folded. Fortunately we survived, and there were clubs that helped us to do that, but Charlton was certainly not one of them - quite the opposite in fact.

For the record, I don't have an issue with them doing the coach thing from all over Kent either. Kent is a big county, and there are a lot of football fans. Offering cheap travel and tickets to watch some of the countries' best players was a no-brainer. Was always amusing that it was always 'Come and see Beckham/Zola/Owen' rather than 'Come and see Shaun Bartlett' though.

I said I wouldn't get involved in this chat again, but just to add that they also offered free or cheap tickets to new housing developments in the Medway area.
Anyway, that's me done on this topic.

Like The Last Waltz I didnt really want to have to do this again but thought it only fair to post the view from the other side of the fence.

Charlton introduced The Valley Express initiative to offer cheap travel to already Charlton fans and potential new fans living in and around Kent and Sussex. This includes Medway towns which for the record, is residence to many Charlton fans already particularly the likes of Chatham, Strood, Rochester.

Gills Chairman Paul Scally accused us of trying to steal Gillingham fans which frankly is a load of bollocks, how many hundreds of thousands of Gills fans were we likely to poach from these areas? (I think it may have been more pick-up points at the time the initiative started.)

http://www.cafc.co.uk/documents/valley-express-pick-up-times83-2957645.pdf

Let's also be fair, anyone in these areas that would be likely to go and watch Gillingham would have already done so had they really wanted to.

As for handing out leaflets in the mid 90s, I have said before that if this indeed happen, it could have only been a few rogue fans and they would have been out of order however, given our history and especially so soon after it, I'm extremely sceptical that it happened and am very sure something like that was never endorsed by the club.

Again, that's all I have to say on the matter. Gills fans will believe what they want and I'll do the same.

I was at the game when the Charlton fans handed out the leaflets. Not sure about the other parts of the ground but 2 stood on the corner of Redfern Av and Toronto Rd. Soon got chased off.

The fans handing out such leaflets at a time when Gillingham were in real trouble is pretty low but I imagine it to be a very very small percentage of Charlton fans who probably had no backing or support from any decent Charlton fan.

As for the travel from the Medway area, I would just say that's a good initiative from Charlton to increase their fan base. As a business, it is up to Gillingham to counter this and 'defend their territory'. That said, football is a different type of business to most and I can't imagine that them running coaches from the Gillingham area would suddenly see hundreds/thousands of Gillingham fans suddenly deciding they want to go to Charlton. Most people support their club (and I'm talking those fans who pay into the club by going to watch them( because it's their local team, their parents got them hooked, or they followed their mates' lead, not because the club have made some sort of attractive proposal to them.

Still it's nice to see that League 1 will still have plenty of tinpot threads running throughout next season. Was worried there would be no replacement for the Vale-Crewe rivalry
