Bit different in the cup compared to the league though isn’t it?

Bit of a weird statement, realistically are Luton gonna turn up to away teams in this league and not keep it tight and cautious?

I'd be hugely surprised if we did, Jones is an attack minded coach who has recruited players to play good quality football, we aren't going to sit back and defend. We haven't scored tons of goals this season by sitting back, it may sound naive and ambiguous however Jones has a large Spanish influence in his footballing career which he refers to regularly and we all know Spanish teams aren't taught to defend.

Think you will learn early doors you get punished far more frequently than in L2 for being ‘open’ so would be surprised if you don’t compromise away from home after a few weeks. Especially if you’ve got people like Sheehan playing in defence...

Tbh, I swear teams seem to score 80% of the shots on target in L1.

They do against us anyway

It's a bit strange to see that we have the second best defensive record in league 2 this season, despite looking incredibly open in midfield and defence at times - imo down to the diamond system with too many of our midfielders being more attack minded than defensive minded, and the fullbacks expected to overlap all the time. Also, at times, it seems that whoever we play at the back, opposition forwards have had little problem finding themselves unmarked. I'm sure that better oppositions would have taken much more advantage than some of the donkeys in league 2. I hope that the coaches address this before we meet the better teams in league 1.

Sheehan is our POTS in a team that has scored over 100 goals. He is priceless at L2 level at both ends of the pitch.

Well that gives me an indicator in the difference between the leagues. We signed him as a left back and he couldn’t get a sniff, admittedly up against a good player who’s now in the Championship. And his gaffes at centre back caused him to be dropped and then start moaning that he was being frozen out before he moved on.

At some clubs it works, some not. He’s played most of his career at L1 level; he scored 7 goals in 40 odd appearances the season before joining Bradford so he must be capable. What defender doesn’t make errors?

It's good to be back in the 3rd tier, looking forward to the challenge that faces us and hoping that we'll see far less obstructive teams in this division and more teams who may be able to engage in a decent football match. Could be way off the mark with those hopes though!

Yes, we are all furiously plotting how we can waste time and scrape a draw with the mighty Luton next year.

Yep, that was my point exactly. Well done!

Given Oxford's high educational reputation, it would appear that this one got away...

My whole point was that those mistakes will get punished more, you’ll concede more and I’ll be surprised if you don’t turn into a more defensive side especially away from home, which is apparently is a really bad thing for Luton fans.

One promotion doesn't mean a team should change it's whole philosophy about football! We aren't going to go from being an attacking and passing football type side to a dogged, battling, defensive side, that's not what Jones has recruited for.

We will no doubt try to strengthen the defence with a new face or two but the style of football will not change and there is no reason that we can't be successful in a higher league while playing a decent brand of football.

I think you're missing bantamigo's point fella. He's not saying you'll change your style of football, but you will if you play too openly and end up losing 2/3-0 for a few games away from home.

If you don't then please be our guests, but it will show a sign of poor management - certainly we'd be all welcoming you at our own places that's for sure :shifty:

Yea maybe.

It goes without saying that we would operate with a bit more caution to how many we commit going forward, especially on the road in a stronger league.

Agree with all of that. Every team changes to a degree, we did and based on their performance at ours earlier in the season compared to later performances Pompey did as well.

Or he was educated somewhere that didn't study poorly written football forum posts from Luton.

University is overrated. Even we've got one:bg: Anway league one does have a league two feel about it. In terms of recent history and club size. No surprise that Wigan and Blacburn have gone straigth back up or that Plymouth and Portsmouth are in play off mix in the first year back. Expect the latter two to do even better next year if they don't go up this season.

Quite looking forward to finishing 15th. Its been about 13 years since we were neither relegated nor challenging for promotion...

Luton broke my heart in 1990 when they stayed up at our expense but it worked out in the end.

Cannot imagine what they've been through as a fanbase, I'll level the same at Stockport etc amongst others so to see them bounce back is great even if for a few seasons when we were battling in the mid 2000s they annoyed me.

As I've said before Football is beautifully cruel and we all love it.
