The top 8 or so in this league is much better than anything League 2 has to offer IMO - however, it's not a huge gulf. If you can build yourselves a solid defensive base/spine, mix in a clinical striker and you won't be far away from the top 8. I always think a team needs a forward to score 20 goals to really have a shout at this level.

I'm not that sure that the top 8 are that much better than the rest of league 1 to be honest Saddler. There were no teams I saw this season where I thought 'blimey, these are a bit good aren't they'. (Perhaps Wigan aside).

That said, I agree with your other point. We had a 20+ striker, good partner for him (Obika) but our defensive spine was as strong as a wall fashioned from strawberry jelly. In fact we were lucky to have said striker as he won us many points that otherwise would have seen us go down probably.

I think when we went up our top scorer got around 15, can't quite remember. We had quite a few with more than 10 goals though

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Recognise a fair few names (Ox fans) from another forum I was on a long time back.
Look forward to some friendly banter.

In league two!!

Skarz, Maguire and Bowery were toss in the championship, so will be mediocre in this league probably.
While Skarz has been very steady for us in league 2, I happen to agree with you that he may not quite League 1 level - even though almost everyone seems to think the gap between L1 & L2 is small. As for Bowery, I hope we don't renew his contract.

Maguire had a month or so where he was not very good, but his first few performances, and then especially in the last month of the season, he was fantastic, and along with Super Danny Hylton was probably our best player in that time. Hylton was also, deservedly, the supporters' player of the season (beating Roofe).

As for other players, decent ones are Sercombe, and some youngish players who I'd say are Championship level already: Lundstram (22), O'Dowda (21), as well as Roofe (23).

Thought I would pop in and say hi to all, nice to see some old faces from last time. Just glad to be here, I'm exhausted after the last three seasons!

Thanks and Hi etc...

Should do ok looking at the Barnsley, Millwall and Swindon games.

We'll need a ruthless centre forward if we want top 6 and they're not easy to find. Roofe and the midfield step up absolutely no problem. Lundstram and O'Dowda certain to play Championship football. Work to do on the back five.

Will Kemar still be with you at the start of the season?

I think there's a good chance he is, he's still not really proven, and for the money we'd want it'd be a big gamble for any club, he seems happy to stay, so unless someone comes in and offers us over 2 million I can't see it being entertained

I consoled myself with the fact that with Oxford & Rovers coming up it's two local games next season, however from over here Rovers is my second longest away trip of the season (assuming Plymouth don't get promoted) and Oxford is farther than Chesterfield (just).

Sometimes it's a bit shit being an exile :(

22 year old striker who scored 30 goals in his first full season, many of them belters, has 2 years left on his contract, performed in several big games, has said he's happy to stay

We'll get offers of at least 1 million, we won't accept anything below 2, i'm confident of that

We've got Ajose - 24 years old, League 1 top scorer and I don't reckon we'd get a million for him.

You're in cloud cuckoo land if you think a League 2 scrubber would attract offers anywhere near

We were offered a million for O'Dowda...

Maybe this is why you're skint?

Roofe got something like 12 cup goals, including a brace as we absolutely dismantled Swindon, for the fifth time in a row

2 million is probably too much, that's why I think there's a good chance he stays, maybe we accept closer to 1 mil than 2, but I think its unlikely

It's got fuck all to do with transfer values, really. It's whether a bigger club offers to quadruple his wages.

Club says no, player unhappy and doesn't perform.

You still paying Uncle Firoz £500,000 a year for your 3 sided carbuncle?

Yeah, can't deny that. But those games really had little effect to the club - fans yes, club no.

We won the league when you did the double, we had 12 first team players out injured in the JPT and the other cup games, well meh, we've been dumped by Macclesfield (twice) and Cheltenham in the FA Cup in recent times so it's hardly an isolated thing.

We used to be a really decent cup side. Gone to shit now.

God knows. Obika will probably go too which would be a bigger loss IMO.

No way Williams will be back. Any decent young strikers in L2 we could plunder?

Roofe seems happy enough to stay, and I don't think we would let him go for anything well over 1 million. Pretty much the same scenario with O'Dowda, who has been called up to the senior Ireland squad today, which should add a few more pounds to his value.
