Finished Whiteout by Ken Follett. Absolute trash. Gave it 2 stars on Goodreads.

Started The Churchill Factor by Boris Johnson. It starts ok.

Read "Half the World" by Joe Abercrombie, the follow up to "Half A King." I really enjoyed it, I was skeptical about this book following two new characters and didn't know if I could be bothered to learn about them but they were both good. As it's aimed at a younger reader it's easier to read because it only follows two characters point of views where as normally JA flits between several characters, sometimes even on one page which can be difficult to follow. Despite that he's still created a really interesting world and it's been a pleasure to read.

I'm going to have a break from his books now now but I look forward to reading the last in the series. He's certainly one of my favorite authors and it's a shame that I have nearly read everything that he's put out.

Decided to take a time from the obrigatory readings and get into the classics of my most enjoyable themes so reading now Dracula by Bram Stoker. This book must be one of my favorite if not the one. The mystery vibe is very involving with great descriptive elements of the environment of Transylvania that creates a completely interesting identity to the story. And a memorable mention to the characters who are notable and intriguing.

I haven't read anything in a while so decided to get stuck back in. I chose Bernard Cornwell's Waterloo; The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles.

My knowledge of most history is fairly limited and Waterloo is no exception. Other than we beat the frenchies and ABBA wrote a song on it, I knew very little. I'm only half way through but I've found it very interesting so far. It's littered with first hand accounts of the battles which are very eye opening. I'm finding it a little hard to keep up with who is who but managing just about. The detail of the two great tacticians going head to head is fascinating and the role the weather had on the battles is something I hadn't appreciated.

So far so good. After this, I may choose another random subject to read up on.

Just couldn't get into Cornwell's Last Kingdom. I've read about 3/4s of it but just have no desire to pick it up again. It occasionally threatens to get good but mostly nothing is happening. I will try to finish it as I have the second book and I hope that that is more of what I was expecting as I know plenty of people rate the series quite highly.

Started on James Holland's War In The West. Very accessible history of the second world war. Going to eventually be in three volumes the first volume, Germany Ascendant, covers the build up to the war until 1941.

Saw that the other day cheese but didn't go for it. I might have to reconsider.

I read "How I lost you" recently which is a story about a woman who killed her baby but upon release from a psychiatric unit she gets a picture of a toddler in the post that claims to be a picture of her son. I thought it was going to be more focused on the mental health side of things but it turned out to be a standard thriller and a disappointing one at that.

Currently reading the second book in Toby Clements "Kingmaker" series which takes place during the war of the roses. Its been hard going so far and I've not really enjoyed it. I hope it picks up soon because the first one was brilliant.

It's also turned a little raunchy...

Retinue - Defence of A kingdom by Graham Nolan.
The tale of a young English Archer Rowan fighting against The Welsh led by Owain Glyn Dwr in 1403,this is the first of a trilogy which is so good i can't stop reading it for hours at a time, well described battle scenes mixed well with Rowan's life and his friends who he grew up with all learning to use the longbow from an early age and now fighting together it's a real masterpiece of writing.

Parks and Recreation was pretty good. Peaked very early though I thought, although that might just be because I don't like Rob Lowe or Adam Scott.

What happened to Fresh Meat? Wasn't there meant to be a new series?

Age Of Iron by Angus Watson.
First in a trilogy of books about Julius Caesar's attempted invasion of Britain in 55BC. Not much is known about this except for Caesar's own diaries so the author has plenty of scope to form a story. Funny in places with soldiers humour and glorious bloody battles that seem to go on for ages.

The Martian by Andy Weir (as made into a recent film). About a quarter of the way through in a couple of days and it's brilliantly, utterly compelling.

Finished The Martian a couple of days ago. The tension is great, the detail is brilliant, I loved it and I couldn't put it down. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes sci fi.

I loved it as well. Felt the film didn't quite live up to it but reckon I'd have liked the film more if I hadn't read the book.

I haven't seen the film, I really want to now. It probably won't match my expectations but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Legionary by Gordon Doherty.
First of a series of 5 novels about a roman soldier Numerius Vitellius Pavo and the battles with the Goths in the kingdom of Bosporus starting in 376 AD. Fast paced and action packed and very well written so just my kind of book. Just as well i like it as i ordered all 5 without even reading the first one.

Yeah a really good book. Thought it was quite funny and although some people criticized the science talk I didn't think it was to bad.

Just started "Mr Nice" the autobiography of a international drug dealer. Not to bad so far.

A classic #gapyear #travelwanker book is that mate.

Read it years back in South East Asia. #travelwanker

Seem to remember the beginning dragging a bit when he was describing his school days, but it is really good once it gets going.

I just finished "Ham on Rye" by Charles Bukowski. Not a great deal of plot, but I don't mind that.

Recently finish On the Road which I read off and on for a while. It didn't have the "life changing" effect on me it seems to have had on many but it was a good read none the less. The American landscapes were the hero of the books rather than Dick and Sal, who just came across unlikeable and dull.

Fancied changing things up a bit so I read Dirt, The Motley Crue Autobiography. Despite them being famous for being probably the most debaucherous band of all time, I felt they tried a bit hard in places.
I don't know about you, but would you and your mate stick your dicks in (the same) meat burrito so your girlfriends can't smell the other women you've slept in the same night? You're disgusting.

I have tried a few times but I cannot get with the Beat daddios. There's one bit in the The Dharma Bums when yon fella is climbing up a mountain and I felt like I nearly got it, but that's it. The rest makes me want to fling the books out the window.

Mr Robot was good.

although I think they telegraphed that Christian Slater's character wasn't real a bit too much

I don't know, I haven't seen the film. I think it's a pretty faithful adaptation so it probably doesn't make much difference.
