We've had some bad gubbings over the years but my 'worst performance' would have to be the play off final in Cardiff against Brighton a good few years ago. We had beaten them with ease home and away in the league programme and outnumbered their support 2 to 1 at least ( Cardiff is just up the road in all fairness) yet we just didn't turn up at all. Danny bloody Wilson left a very young but lethal (ie when he was good) Leroy Lita out of the squad and Brighton won 1-0 with a Leon Knight penalty. We were truly shite that day, really, really bad.
It's the closest I have ever been to walking away from football as it took most of the summer to recover from that abject performance. I shudder even remembering that day!
How did you fail to mention the banner that made the whole thing inevitable?

(PS. outnumbering 2 to 1 is exaggerating things a tad, but I'm sure we've had this conversation before, possibly on a different forum..)

Luckily I wasn't at the Cardiff game, and was too young to really appreciate the Brighton play-off final.

There were a few home shockers in our relegation season: Wolves, Leicester, Charlton spring to mind. Sheff Weds as well, a game we essentially needed to win to have any chance of staying up. We got a last minute equaliser but the 90 minutes proceeding it was the most gutless display from a team supposedly battling for survival. Summed up our season and we went down with a whimper.

But the worst was last season losing 1-0 away at Crewe under O'Driscoll. They were hideously bad, like non-league level literally couldn't pass the ball 5 yards... and we'd lost to them, and deservedly so. It was the worst game of football I've ever seen and I remember at FT it dawning on me that, fuck, we were going down again here.

I had genuinely forgotten about that banner but it doesn't really matter now Costello, you won and we were dreadful.
I don't do any 'my dad's bigger than your dad' stuff so it wouldn't have been me you had a conversation with bud.
Bad, bad day for us!

That Brighton game and whole day was shocking from start to finish and had to put up with Brighton fans mocking us on the M4 on the journey home. Very gracious of them.

First half against Carlisle was pretty bad last season. Wade Elliot made his first start and looked like he'd never played football in his entire life, and at HT when we were 0-1 down, I text my mate who is a Gashead with a 1000 paragraph text on how incredibly shit and inept we'd been, and telling him I'd see him next year, shedding a tear the whole time I wrote it.

That second half was fucking awesome though. Marv popped up with 2 goals from corners and won us the game. We were just as shit in the 2nd half, but two scrappy set-piece's did it for us.

And - it ended up us being 2 divisions apart, forget about being in the same division :D

As others have mentioned, there have been some Home shockers in recent years. Already been over the Wolves game, but the Leicester game was an embarrassment as well. Chris Wood absolutely tore us a new arsehole that day, it was a spanking. Charlton at home I left after 20 minutes. I think Danny Haynes scored, it was on a fucking Sunday, I just went. Of course, we went on too lose 0-2, so I missed nowt.

Ipswich away was a shit one, we lost like 6-0, it was cold as fuck, and miles away. I just wanted to go home.

Forgot about that Charlton game, we were dreadful.
Coventry at home 13/14 Cotterills first few months was bad mind.
Leeds at home 12/13 aswell we didnt get out of our half until about the 70th minute and George Elokobi broke his ankle infront of me. Basically loads of games between 2012 and 2014.

I've decided I'm boycotting Leeds Away next year. They always absolutely spank us, and at £38 a pop I'll give it a miss.

We were sat in the Atyeo with our mate, who is a Leeds fan who had came down from Leeds (big Leeds fan, but couldn't get tickets in the away end, but he's a ST holder etc) and he'd made a fairly solid debut, but when he went over and put his leg up in their air I couldn't believe it.

Felt incredibly sorry for him, and always had a soft spot for him since.

Since I've followed Town, it's got to be a toss up between the 7-1 against Peterbrough, 6-0 against Leicester, 6-0 against Blackpool and 5-0 against Palace. The later 3 all came at the start of the 12/13 season, Paul Jewell's last although McCarthy has just come in for the Leicester and Palace games

I was at that game. Remember getting home and telling my Dad that Bristol City were the worst opposition I'd ever seen a Charlton side play against, you really were that bad. It wasn't a very good game, as we didn't have to play well ourselves.

I wouldn't call it the 'worst ever' - but I went to Brighton away the first season the AMEX opened; 5 fucking hours in the car, we lost 2-0 and didn't have a shot on target the whole fucking game.

You were shit when you beat us 6-0 last season mate. A half decent team would have scored seven.

Love Marv. That was his last hurrah. Won us that game single-handedly just through sheer force of will more than anything! It was comfortable in the end but you look back to that game or the Gillingham one, if they'd have gone the other way as they quite easily could've done... it might have been very different.

And that just made the Gashead's demise even sweeter. They'd been giving it the big'un for ages about us going down, 'what gap?' etc, even thinking they'd be above us at one point, only for them to completely fuck it up themselves

Grim times. Good job Danny Haynes couldn't finish to save his life or it would've been even worse. Think that was our 7th loss in a row, quite how McInnes wasn't sacked after that I'll never know

Worst ever performance? Pretty much every away game under Chris Hughton and home games weren't great either. I'd never left a game early before he came here (I even sat through the whole 90+ minutes when bloody Colchester beat us 7-1 at CR) but during his reign of terror I was regularly leaving games early. Even the games we won were horrific to watch. I'd also completely given up on away games - wasn't even bothering to check on the scores in the end let alone actually watch/listen/follow the games.

Honestly had more fun watching us lose every week in the Championship the season we were relegated to the third tier for the first time in ~50 years. I went to Blackpool away that season to witness one of the most pathetic, spineless performances I'd ever seen (at the time) and for a while, I didn't think that would be beaten. After Hughton's tenure, it probably wouldn't even come in the top 20.

Aye, we were bloody dreadful only to win 6-0 away from the Gate, we did save a bit for Walsall though! ;)

I expect there will be a few cringe worthy performances next season. Hopefully not too many though :bg:

We haven't lost by more than 3 goals since Charlton Athletic beat us 5-1 at their ground in 2009. If that doesn't change next season, I will be amazed.

The 0-6 against Villa was pretty good, yeah. Petrov scoring from the half-way line et all. I can't really remember much from that season, which is a good thing.

I also thought when we were 1-4 down to Ipswich at HT wondering what we had done. 45 mins later it ended up being 4-4 ;)

not as bad as some previously mentioned, but we were dire at home against rotherham in 2013/14. think it was Cotterills first home game as managers and there were a few chants of "we want o'driscoll back" during the first half. in the second half we came out changed to a 3-5-2/5-3-2 formation and were much better, but the first half was woeful

Was hoping when Nugent bagged a brace on SKY TV at Portman road would have been on your list when we smashed you 4-0  You guys must hate Nugent

Aside from one particularly bad performance, we were no less than abysmal away from home between the 9th December 2012 and the 10th of Feb 2014. During that 14 month period we amassed just one away league win (4-3 at Carlisle). Admittedly, I have skewed that stat somewhat to make us appear even shitter, as we did actually win away from home on the 8th December 2012 and 11th Feb 2014. But still, even then that ups it to just 3 wins in 14 months

24th January maybe 2 years back we lost 3-0 away at second bottom Carlisle. It was bloody cold, took ages to get home and we were awful.

one that will always stand out was the coventry game in northampton, starting off evenly matched, then to go 1-0 after what looked to be a soft penalty, although we didnt have a good view at all, only for a total defensive collapse to be 3-0 down at half time. Then the elation of bringing the game back to 3-3 and thinking we might even have a chance of winning. Annoyance at conceding another to go 4-3 down, then just being happy to take a point after equalising again and finally despair when coventry wrapped up the win at the end

not to mention that the defense when we conceded coventrys fourth would have been unacceptable at sunday league level

Absolutely lost it at Fontaine that day. Not like me at all but after that 4th goal and seeing him casually pick the ball out of the net as if he didn't have a care in the world, the red mist just descended.

Think that was his last game for us, thank fuck

Haha a few weeks after that game we drew 4-4 there, the craziest game I've seen live. 3-2 down with 5 mins left. 4-3 up in the 94th minute, not even back to my seat from celebrating with Humphrey at the front and they'd equalised

I have been to a few. Losing 5-0 away to Southend was a pretty terrible game to go to.

Worst winning game was against Bristol City a few years back. We won 2-1, but we ended the game with about 8 defenders on the pitch. Paul Hart was not manager for very long.
