Was gonna say this but then thought this led to Wembley so not all bad.

West Ham play off final 2005.

Surely my masterclass at Deepdale in 2006 with LUFC deserves a nomination?
There was of course your defeat to Wycombe on pens in 1994.

My mum was still pregnant with me at the Wycombe game so I can't really count that... It also wasn't on pens, we lost 4-2.

The Leeds loss was shit but not as bad as the year before.

You are correct, I think it was Crewe who lost to York on pens the season before.

Play off semi v Brighton in 2004.

Went into the second leg at The Withdean 0-1 down. Sam Parkin scored in the second half to take it into extra time. Rory Fallon made it 1-2 Swindon on aggregate before Adam Virgo decided to score in the last minute of ET forcing penalties which we lost.

Seconds away from a play off final v Bristol City at The Millennium Stadium. Devastating.

We haven't turned up in the two play off finals since v Millwall and Preston which were both gutting occasions but it's easier to handle when you deserve to lose.

The Brighton tie was one we should have prevailed in over two legs and was much tougher to swallow. Plus I was only 15 and starting out full of enthusiasm on my Swindon Town adventure. You don't really contemplate how losing will feel at that age!

That is very true.

Funny thing is imagine that happened to Manchester City then or now. Jesus their fans would be squealing conspiracy like a bunch of girls to heaven and beyond for the next fifty years :lol::lol:.

At least Gills bounced back the following season when it easily could have had the reverse effect.

Also, losing to Sheffield United in the 2009 play offs hurt, not so much because of the result but because we missed out on a Wembley final against the Dingle bastards.

Probably for the best though, they'd have smashed us. We were shit that season, biggest joke ever that we made the play offs.

I wish you beat us.

Biggest heartbreak would have to be relegation from the premier league. Far worse than however many play-off defeats we've had. The whole circumstances of being ahead in the points race, Tevez, Man Utds weakened team, us only having to draw against Wigan, being the (then) team relegated with the highest number of points and only being a young 'un at the time. Sickening.

Likewise West Ham cheated as well but as they are the FA darlings such things as automatic relegations, expulsion from the following season's FA Cup or even a points deduction were totally out of the question.

Correct.I was there.
We went up automatically the following year though.
Indeed, Feb/March 1994 Bury in 8th position won 4-2 at Gresty Rd to move into 7th place, Crewe were top three so massive win, we didn't win again that season and ended up 13th.

I was at the 4-2.game.We didn't lose by those type of scores very often at GR in those days.

Tbf you didn't have to face Mark Carter most weeks .

I was only a nipper but remember seeing the score on the vidiprinter and buzzing as I knew that beating Crewe was a big deal. Also we had a shite away record that season so it made it even more surprising.

I wasn't at the West Ham game so it's not as bad for me. Though the sheffield united PO game was a particularly bad one.

Liam Dickinson scoring the 3rd for Stockport at Wembley in 2008. The dream was over.

What ever happened to them? Ha ha ha.

Your relegation in 1994 was even more suspect, Wimbledon 2-0 up at Everton and you're leading at Chelsea, Everton storm back to win 3-2 and you lot lose 3-2 in injury time, a draw, once again would have kept you up.

Funny thing is I was on a tube full of County fans coming out of Wembley. All singing "we'll never play you again". How true that was.

At least it saved you the heartbreak of losing in the final

Fair point Alan bottlejob Knill would have shat himself appearing at a big stage and just played for a 0-0 draw as he did in that 0-0 at the priestfield at the tail end of the season.
I should add that was a game where if Exeter won and we failed to win Exeter were promoted so Knill played for a draw, pathetic!
