Our closest club these days is Morecambe, and while our games against them have a distinct local feel to them, it's not exactly a rivalry, more of a friendly rivalry. We appreciate that they bring a good number of fans to BP, and enjoy a good day out when we travel to Morecambe, and they probably feel the same about us. Although I don't relish beating Morecambe more than anyone else, it's always a fixture I look out for.

Agree with that. I always enjoy Morecambe away, and quite like them as a club. Accrington are a bit similar, a decent local game but no rivalry.

Can you explain the Swindon/Gillingham thing to me? Seems like an unlikely rivalry.
Apparently it dates back from the 1986/87 play-off final between the two.

No, before that. It relates to a game at Gillingham in the late 70s, where one of theirs was sent off for a challenge on Ray McHale. They always claimed McHale conned the ref, and I think we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. The point they dropped cost them promotion. The next game at ours their players tried to get their own retribution on McHale & had someone sent off again. There was then a punch up in the tunnel involving the players & our physiology was assaulted. I think it went to court.

After that it was a bit feisty for a few years, and the play-off final in 86/87 some of our chaps caused a bit of unrest in Gillingham so the ill feeling carried on for a while longer.

I'm sure just like you most Swindon fans under a certain age have absolutely no idea why a team from so far away are a so called rival. I guess it also helps that Gillingham don't really have any natural rivals in the FL.

Anyway, for us it has to be the yellow filth followed by the Brizzle clubs. Before the p155 stains got into the league our rivals used to be Reading, unfortunately they've left us behind in recent times because those games were always a bit interesting./

I guess it's the same with us and Notts county, they're obviously bigger than us and won something when Henry XIII was on the throne or something other irrelevant to now. We usually take about as much if not more than we get at home but it just turned out to be a great game, there's not the outright hatred there is with Chesterfield and I'd find it a shame if our rivalry became anything different. It's nice to have a game without that pressure. I genuinely enjoy the days - the county lot are a decent bunch and there's no bother. I'm genuinely concerned the younger lot will ruin it for all - there's nothing there and it shouldn't change.

Also I've not saw us lose at meadow lane in 7 games so happy days.

Notts police infamously making the game a Friday night was a cracking idea with us guys, and this year falls on paddys day, so no doubt Notts police will get into a flap.

Also, it's a great payday for them given the losses they make, so we all win
