My favourite and in my opinion best of all time was Dean Ashton.. Was my childhood hero and I'll never forget how bad I felt when I read the back of the Crewe Chronicle in 05 and saw he was sold, don't think I attended a game for the rest of the season.

Best loan player I've personally seen was Gylfi Sigurdsson, actually made watching the Alex under Gudjon bearable for a few months.

Ashton was class, wasn't he injured on England duty, or just been named in the squad or something? Born in Swindon.

Remember him and Hulse taking the piss in a 0-3 win for Crewe at the County Ground and coming away thinking what a side.

Of all time no doubt Alan Woodward who died last Thursday, only seen video clips but looked a class act !

As for in my lifetime, not a lot to choose from but will go for Phil Jagielka !

He made 1 app for England. Career was ended by Shaun Wright-Phillips, the little useless twat.

Ankle smashed to pieces by Shaun Wright-Phillips the day before he was due to make his full debut for England. He spent 3 years trying to come back from it, got a England cap in the most pointless of pointless England friendlies, but had to have his ankle fused hence retirement. Got a nice compensation package from all accounts.

The typical ones from the late 80s early 90s. Andy Ritchie, Rodger Palmer, rick Holden, Nicky Henry, Gunnar Halle etc. Sadly they were mostly coming towards the end of their careers when I started going.

Best in my time, I'm going to go for John Sheridan. Played in piss poor sides, could barely run but dictated and ran games. Must have been quality for the likes of Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday.

Not Fatty Foulke? He apparently got pissed off with opposition fans throwing coins at him, so he invaded the stand on his own and beat the crap out of one of the offenders. Seems he once was also annoyed with a useless ref, and after the game he burst into the ref's changing room, and chased the hapless naked bloke across the pitch, yelling at him. This doesn't happen much outside Wolverhampton these days.

Of all time there's no contest - got to be John Atyeo.

In my time, in terms of pure ability it's Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. One of those players that gets you on the edge of your seat everytime he's on the ball. Still gutted he's gone.

In terms of who'll go on to play at the highest level, I'd say Steven Caulker. Incredible for such a young player (19 when he spent the season on loan) to be such a complete defender. Had it all: positional sense, accomplished on the ball, strong in the air, he was a leader. Reminiscent of a young Rio Ferdinand. Said at the time he'd go on to captain England one day and, though his development hasn't gone quite as he'd have liked and he's made some poor career moves, I stand by that.

Has to be atyeo for us, would agree with ciderhead that in recent times JET has got to be right up there, one of the most technically gifted players I've seen, just needs to find consistency

Swindon Town?

Don Rogers - he stands alone.

a two footed, unselfish creator and clinical finisher, almost disinterested but always creating a buzz all around him, quiet yet lethal, loving one on ones against a keeper but also volleys and free kicks and a reluctant deity never required to track back or head a ball but able to run the length of the field and beat several players.

For others, I have also grudgingly admired exceptional perfornances at the County Ground of very young "unknown" players like Lua Lua (Colchester) , Nick Powell (Crewe - admittedly in Lge 2 rather than Lge 1) and Kevin Davis for Chesterfield.

Deano was immense obviously, easily the 2nd best for me. He couldn't do half the things Powell could do though.
Ashton played in the championship for us. Tearing championship defenders apart. he then went onto play for west ham, Norwich and England. Nick Powell was emmence but he was league two and he's done nothing since leaving us really.

Honourable mentions to David platt, Ashley Westwood, David Vaughan, Robbie savage, Chuks Aneke (I thought he was class) are just some of the names that haven't been mentioned But for me:
1st Ashton
2nd Platt
3rd Powell/Westwood

On technical ability best player ever has to be Stan Collymore, could tell from day one he was destined to be a very very good player

My pick would be Chris Powell though, complete legend at Southend, had some good left backs down the years but his positional sense, tackling and tracking marked him out to go on to better things, was so pleased when he played for England. Hope he comes back to manage one day, couldn't care if we utterly bombed with him in charge, would be an honour to have him back at the club.

Hourable mentions for Nick Powell, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson, Nicky Maynard, Gylfi Siguardson and Madjid Bougherra but there can only be one winner and that is the king Dean "Deano" Ashton. The fact he did what he did at our highest ever level. He was basically a championship team all by himself, you only gave to look at our record for the season and a half in the championship after he left. As other have said its a travisty his career was so short I have the up most confidence he would have gone on to be a top premier league and England international centre forward.

Some great players down the years Don Rogers and Mike Summerbee in the 70's, Duncan Shearer and Chris Kamara in the 80's, Glenn Hoddle , John Moncur, Mickey Hazard and Jan Age Fjortoft in the 90's, Sam Parkin and Simon Cox in the noughties and more recently Matt Ritchie, Mass Luongo and Charlie Austin(always destined for the top).
For me Hoddle was an absolute pleasure to watch and I cant really remember seeing Sir Don as I was to young to remember , although special mention for Charlie Austin as I know the family and it is always great to see a local lad do well.

Dean Ashton, without a shadow of a doubt. Not just my life time, probably best ever. He could/should have gone on to play at the very, very top. Absolutely gutted when he broke his ankle, devastated when he retired.
I remember the game at BP in the 02/03 season, think you finished 2nd and we finished 5th, Ashton and Hulse tore us to bits and you won 3-1.

Roger Palmer or Andy Ritchie go down as the clubs best player.

In my lifetime? David Eyres was a favourite and he will still making Full Backs look stupid in his late thirties. Mention to Jose Baxter aswell, he was class for us but hasn't really hit the same heights at Sheff Utd.
