Fulham striker, Mitrovic in action for the Serbian national team

With this year’s Championship season now underway, the race for the league’s golden boot is already starting to shape up. With at least ten players in the running and undoubtedly a few wild cards sure to upset the odds, the Championship top scorer is always one of the campaign’s most compelling subplots.

Will Fulham’s Serbian battering ram, Aleksandr Mitrovic lead his team back to the Premier League on the back of a new deal and 11 goals in the top tier last season? Or will Leeds United striker, Patrick Bamford finally fulfil his early promise and head, tap and smash his side back into the top tier of English football? Whilst this pair may be the favourites, those in the know are also backing a range of strikers with slightly less buzz but just as much talent.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at our selection for players most likely to be top scorer in the Championship this season…

Aleksandr Mitrovic

Serbian striker, Mitrovic is this year’s bookies favourite for the Championship golden boot, with his Fulham side hotly tipped for an immediate return to the Premier League. After something of a miserable season last year in the UK’s top tier, the Whites will be hoping that their talismanic centre-forward can propel them once again into the Premier League.

Mitrovic has forged a bullishly effective style that’s right at home in England’s physical, frenetic game, making him one of the most feared strikers in the Championship. Fulham lost their first game in the second-tier away to Barnsley, yet they will look to bounce back going forward with Mitrovic leading the charge. After signing a new five year deal in July 2019, the Serbian forward will hope to equal or if not better his return of 11 goals from last season.

Patrick Bamford

After an injury hit campaign last time out, former Chelsea trainee, Bamford will look to take his Leeds United career to new heights this year. In fact, Bamford is already off the mark this season after bagging a goal for himself in the season opener. It has been heavily reported that Bamford has spent much of the summer bulking up in the gym ahead of the new campaign, after many were critical of a perceived lack of strength and aggression last time out.

The former Middlesbrough striker has been tipped to surpass 20 goals this season with Leeds, who will look to challenge for promotion once more under Marcelo Bielsa’s leadership. The Yorkshire club came close last season only to fall to Frank Lampard’s Derby County in a hotly contested play off semi final.

Bamford only showed flashes of his potential at Middlesbrough

Kenneth Zohore

Once a highly promising youngster, Zohore never hit the heights after a move to Fiorentina came perhaps a couple of years too soon. Nowadays, the Danish striker is at one of the Championship’s biggest clubs in West Bromwich Albion and he will hope to continue the great form that earned him such a move. At just twenty five years old, Zohore should be beginning to hit his peak, yet after just one goal in twenty games for Cardiff last year his frustrating career has continued to stall.

However, Baggies fans and pundits alike are tipping Zohore to enjoy a profitable season in front of goal in 2019/20, having signed for the Midlands outfit for a fee of around £8 million in July. With Zohore’s West Brom expected to win their next game, the Dane will be looking to get off the mark in the goalscoring charts.

Karlan Grant

After signing for Huddersfield in January 2019, Grant went on to score four goals in thirteen appearances in the 2019/20 season as Huddersfield were relegated. The Yorkshire outfit will look to bounce straight back into the Premier League this season, with Grant at the spearhead of their attack. Clearly, the bookies are also backing the London-born striker to bang in the goals this year, as they have him as one of the favourites to bag the league’s top goalscorer award.

Grant’s speed, strength and technical ability might just see him crowned golden boot winner come the end of the 2019/20 Championship season.

I really like Grant as a shout (had a bet on him scoring tonight).

I think Bowen and Lyle Taylor have a good chance if their teams go well this season.

Grant and Mitrovic both on the score sheet tonight, isn't that 3 in 3 for Grant?

Yeah think you're right, Neil Mellor got 20 in 2010/11 but scored quite a few of those in the JPT.

Mitrovic will get it I'm sure, but I'm sure someone will come out of nowhere and put in a close shout.

Not sure if Grant will be in the reckoning in that Huddersfield team, 2 of his 3 goals have been penalties and according to Whoscored he's averaging 1.4 shots per game...

Shocked at how bad they look.
