Took 24000 to Old Trafford for the FA Cup Semi Final (was a sell out back then)

IN more regular games - biggest I’ve seen us take away - 5500 to Derby. 4000+ to Sheffield Wednesday on more than one occasion. Sheffield United let us have 5000 odd at Bramall Lane when we were in the League 1 play offs. Had 3800 at Forest also on New Year’s Eve.

Not a biggy but Had around 1500 at Torquay one Friday night in the promotion season. That stands out because of how far it is, I think everyone stayed over and it was a proper good weekend.

Bit depressing considering where we are at now.

Was it as many as 15k? I had 10k in my head. I didn’t go as I was only six and it was in the days of terraces. Arsenal didn’t have a bigger home attendance after that game until they moved to the Emirates (excluding their odd Champions League games at the old Wembley).

More recently we had 6k at Man Utd on a Tuesday night in 2015 and our best for a neutral game is 21k for the first play off final we lost against Exeter at the new Wembley in 2008.

Since neutral venues are now permitted, 30,000 at Wembley in 2000 for the League Cup Final.

Tranmere, Luton and Oxford are the only clubs to have played in a major Wembley final and suffer relegation from the Football League.

I think it was about 9000 to old Trafford in 1995 where the late kieron durkan (RIP) scored to put us in front in an fa cup 4th round tie. Apart from Nottingham Forrest we were the only team to score more than once that season -though I think our early goal pissed them off as well lost 5-2.

Would have to be 9,000 away at Arsenal FA Cup 5th Round Replay 2011. Made more noise than 50,000 gooners but that isn't difficult.

Other large away followings would be over 6,000 watching us beat Fulham FA Cup Round 3 2006.
Away to Oxford last league game of season needing promotion and took their side. Over 4,000.

More recently would be the 2,000+ we took to Southend in 2013 for football league trophy area final (We don't like them very much) and we have been in or around 2,000 for a number of away games these last two seasons away at places like Braintree and Borehamwood, ohhh the glamour.

I suppose i might as well add the two Middlesbrough vs Darlington (about 7,000 Quakers) home and away FA Cup matches in Jan 1985 at Ayresome Park and the Feethams replay a couple of day's later that i attended.

And the replay at Feethams in which Darlington won 2-1 in front of (14,000). With about 8,000 Boro in attendance. Never forget this night between the battle of Darlo vs Boro and that wasn't the football.

I was once invited by a friend to watch Huddersfield vs Sunderland. When they went 3-0 up, the aged Sunderland fan next to me told me "this is the best team we've had in 50 years". When The Terriers got 2 quick goals in the second half, his opinion had changed somewhat- "this lot won't last 2 fucking minutes in the Premiership next year!".

All that besides, I first became aware of Sunderland's incredible support when my Sunday newspaper reported the "Sunderland hordes" going "wild" when Billy Hughes (what a fantastic name) scored this goal at Man City in 1973:
