It is time.

Fuck all this half-arsed pre-season nonsense, bring on the real deal.

Screenshot 2024-08-04 131654.png

Early top of the table clash between Peterborough and Hudds, nice.

Exeter and Rotherham get to chant, "fuck Matt Taylor" at one another.

We have TV's Wrexham first up, which should be interesting.

Obviously playing this lot is no normal game of football, their "story consultants" have to agree what happens before the game, get it signed off by the Disney execs, then the two teams have to sit down and agree how to make it all look convincing - it's a lot like pro-wrestling in that respect.

Of course to keep up the spice of the narrative, occasionally "the bad guys" (in this case us, obviously) do defeat the heroes - after all it wouldn't seem like a heroic quest if they just won every week, right?

But I don't think we'll get the benefit of a win here - it's too early in the season for Wrexham to lose.

Got to keep the Americans onside, each week Disney holds a huge focus group of Yanks in places like Bumfuck, Idaho, and asks them what they want to see in upcoming episodes.

And typically they want to see goals, goals, goals.

So I think the most likely outcome here is 4-2 to Wxm, we'll go 2-0 up, just to make it look like the good guys are going to struggle, and make the inevitable Welsh comeback look all the mightier when it happens.

Well done lads, and hope you won't edit the footage too harshly to make us look like total bastards.

Of course we pocket a little backhander for playing the game to the outcome that the Disney guys want us to play, so hopefully we can use it to give our tea bars a lick of paint and fix the leaky bogs before our first home game. Everyone's a winner.

I was thinking the other day of the first time we ever played Wycombe, back in 1994. We beat them 4-1, Gary Bennett getting a hattrick. My family are from Bucks originally and at the time I thought it was amusing they had a league team.

Never got easier against them and our head to head record isn't brilliant (probably more to do with the trajectory of both clubs being distinctly different in the late 90s/Early 2000s.

Wouldn't mind a similar score next weekend. But I suspect it'll be a lot closer.

Orient away we wont have our strongest team out by any means but i do not expect to lose. Wellens teams are always up for a battle, doubt it will be a game for the purist. Going to nick it by a goal or a hard fought Score draw

I'm thinking along the same lines, we don't have many injuries and will play a more or less full strength team but I am not daft enough to believe we have a better side then yourselves.

We will likely need to score first to get anything from the game.

We have an absolutely abysmal opening day record so the betting types amongst you might want to put summat on Cambridge this weekend.

We will have 3/4 players who will be returning from injury/ new signings and will only get on the bench Charles and Johnston who will both be key players will only get as far as the bench. Our new Hungarian lwb only played 60 mins on Saturday . Jones, Williams, Gomes are out injured and Firino and Dempsey will need a few games before being ready for the first team

It’s probably a good time to play Stockport at their place as it sounds like they have injury problems and still trying to get business done.

I’d take a point now as our away record was shocking last season.

Hoping we’re catching Rotherham at a good time, with their 50 signings yet to gel. Game should be a sell out, so hoping for a good atmosphere.

Ryan Woods is suspended for us which is a blow. Expecting Magennis to lead the line.

Of course, one of Nombe or Jules will probably score in front of the BB.

2-2 Draw

In fairness you could argue that you got a little revenge by way of palming Craig Faulconbridge off on us - arguably our worst signing ever.

Not worst player, but worst signing - as in, on big wedge, on a long contract, and spent most of it in the treatment room.

We keep conceding early and late goals so 2 2 would do me nicely TBH.

Yes that was a big favour you did for us there. Full of himself as well.

Back where we belong, can't wait.

0-0 all over this. We have no strikers and have a solid backline.

Is Vokes likely to play?

No, he’s barely featured in pre-season and I think he’s a bit crocked.

Suspect we will start with Richard Kone up front, who is a rough diamond type we poached from non-league, in his first full season of league football, but shows definite potential.

We also have Daniel Udoh in contention who we just signed from Shrewsbury, had a decent strike rate for them (1 in 3ish) which is no mean feat considering they were mostly a fairly negative defensive side in his time there.

Been looking forward to seeing you start this, thewwfc

Rotherham at home. Heart says 2-1 win, head says 3-0 loss, Nombe x2, Jules and a Dawson penalty save just for good measure.

I know, I’ve missed my constant pessimism too lads.

We don't know if Nombe will start, surely?

Tough opener for us, especially without Woods, Mitchell and now Wildschut.

Take a point to be honest

Lincoln at home.
It will be a 3-1 loss, a 3-1 win or a 2-2 draw
God knows. We will probably sign another 15 players by Friday anyway and change the whole team.

Reading at home, we have had a great pre season and made some unreal signings, i fully expect on my bus ride home it will end up being Birmingham City 0-1 Reading typical blues :gr::gr:

I think we could nick it, if the defence and midfield is as solid as it looks we have enough options in Lee, Marriott, Palmer, Dalby, Fletcher (?) to nick one or two.

Our forward line without Mullin is quite frankly tedious at best. I can't see a combo of Fletcher, Dalby, Palmer, Marriott and Waters getting more than 10 between them. We are fantastic in the defence and midfield.

Gas away. Two teams tipped to be down there and both will be hoping for a good performance to get things under way. Other than 2015 we seem to have a poor record at the Mem and I can see that continuing.

2-0 Rovers.

As Bartonyellow says, no-one knows what to expect from Burton given the changes there over the summer although I strongly suspect they'll be nowhere near as long ball and physical as at times last season.

We're without Walker (three months out), Hamilton (injured last season, back in September/October), Hackett (back in training but recovering from a dislocated shoulder picked up at the end of last season) and we've had no news on McGrandles since he had an issue about three weeks ago.

Quite surprisingly to us, we're expecting Jovan Makama to start the season ahead of Freddie Draper as part of a front two. Quite the rise for someone who was about to head out to Peterborough Sports just under a year ago but I suspect if/when we bring a Walker replacement in he'll drop back to the bench.

I think first game of the season everyone wants to ensure they get off the mark, so a draw would be acceptable.

Just to let everyone know it’s Barnsley vs Mansfield on the 9th on telly

Absolutely no idea what to expect, other than a very large and loud away following.

We do have plenty injured, Maris probably the biggest loss with him being almost a certain starter otherwise. We have quite a lot of players that not be back until October time so they will be registered in the squad but obviously not available leaving us a bit short, particularly in defence which I’m worried about.

I know you didn't just list Dalby as a player who could get us a goal.

Man tried to sneak his name in there didn't he.

Unless he means 1 or 2 over the course of the season, which is fair.

How much has he cost you? Or is it another 'undisclosed fee' that's more the norm these day?

Not heard anything yet, we’ve never paid six figures under Clough so this be our first.

I would be happy with a draw as well. Think it will be an open and entertaining game. The pre season games so far are a complete contrast to last season with an emphasis on getting the ball down and playing more.
If you are going there is a lot of pre march entertainment planned - hopefully it’s not dreadful and tacky. The new owners have tried to make some changes to the catering with more staff and more choice for food and drink. Hopefully it’s a better experience for the visiting fans.

So let's get this right. You bought one of the best forwards in League One (Marriott) and apparently he's shite.

We'll have him then.
