So let's get this right. You bought one of the best forwards in League One (Marriott) and apparently he's shite.

We'll have him then.
You might change your mind if you'd seen him play for us since he got here. He looks devoid of any confidence and seems to be 'trying too hard' as the cliche goes. We're all hoping the class is permanent saying comes through with him tbh, coz he gets in some great positions through the runs he makes.

Do some of these players not need a run of games though?

Luke Bolton was in the same boat, you said you all didn't rate him when he played, he was one of the best wingers in League 2 at Salford. I think you may need more patience.

In a nutshell, yes. I agree that maybe he is trying to hard, and we can compare like for like against Mullin, where quite frankly for us they are like chalk and cheese.

I hope for his sake that he will turn good, maybe a few games starting and a couple of goals coming off via a deflection or off his arse might do him the world of good.

His movement is excellent but he's really struggling when it matters, in front of goal and has missed pretty much every 1 on 1 he's had. Even Mullin went through a spell of missing chances last season though so it can happen to anybody.

I'm in the 'give him more gametime' camp to see what he can do for us, which I suspect he'll get with Mullin out. He's definitely better than the likes of Waters and Dalby who are non-league standard.

Marriott has the yips I reckon. He's worth persevering with though as he's clearly got some quality. Like Waters was in the Conference though, he was bought to cover Mullin and as soon as he's back he'll be on the bench all season.

Our fans are weird. It's not even the new lot who are the worst but the ones who sat through fifteen years of absolute dross who now write players off after about five minutes.

I've still got a lot of faith in Marriott and Bolton. Both of them looked decent in pre-season imo.

All fans are like this I think, ours are too.

Marriott has scored goals in the Championship. Luke Bolton I really thought/think would suit you down to the ground, proper up and down quick dangerous wide man. Maybe not the most refined but you do play a fast, direct game and I think a pre-season under his belt he'll do well. He's an upgraded version on the lad you had playing RWB who you got from Solihull Motors.

I wouldn't exactly say an upgraded version....more like a faster version, he's really rapid tbf.
His weak spot is his final ball/cross once he's skinned the FB (as was pointed out by a Salford friend of mine when we signed him), whereas our other RWB you're on about (Ryan Barnett), puts some great balls in.
If you could merge 'em together, you'd have one hell of a player!

Luke Bolton is quality, I reckon Jordan Bowery still has nightmares from trying to catch him the other year.

Got to find a way to get a tune out of him.

We seem to enjoy playing Bolton at home, so after our unbeaten pre-season I’ll go for a nice 5-0 thrashing of the lovable losers from Lancashire to kick off our inevitable Invincibles season.

Welshpool to get shithoused 1-0 by Wycombe and Burton Albion to be top after an 8-2 win over Lincoln.

Looking forward to see how a very different Charlton team look. Expecting Wigan to be quite strong so will be happy with a draw.

As Bartonyellow says, no-one knows what to expect from Burton given the changes there over the summer although I strongly suspect they'll be nowhere near as long ball and physical as at times last season.

We're without Walker (three months out), Hamilton (injured last season, back in September/October), Hackett (back in training but recovering from a dislocated shoulder picked up at the end of last season) and we've had no news on McGrandles since he had an issue about three weeks ago.

Quite surprisingly to us, we're expecting Jovan Makama to start the season ahead of Freddie Draper as part of a front two. Quite the rise for someone who was about to head out to Peterborough Sports just under a year ago but I suspect if/when we bring a Walker replacement in he'll drop back to the bench.

I think first game of the season everyone wants to ensure they get off the mark, so a draw would be acceptable.
Jovon Makama really is marmite isn't he?
I know it counts for very little but he was our top scorer in pre season but he still seems to be struggling convince folk he's good enough.
He really got the shitty end of the stick last season, especially pre Xmas, the Bolton game on boxing day when he got more or less bullied and left to it by his so called team mates who let him plough a very loan farrow.
I thought his goal against Leyton Orient was fantastic and showed his ability.
I know House was injured for a big chunk of last season but I thought he was hugely disappointing and missed an absolute sitter against Portsmouth on the final day, but if your face fits with the fans..
For me he has a lot to prove and he isn't a one season wonder

BTW not having a go at you Luke, it's just that some of our just seem to have a real downer on him and have been for him to be loaned out and of course Taylor to return.
Really hoping Jovon proves folk wrong, good luck to him

Think Barnett's a better player than Bolton tbh. Parkinson also seems to think so.

Barnett is a better all round footballer and generally more consistent, Bolton is pace and not much else from what we've seen so far.

...who also wouldn't be with us for very long! That's why they're L1 - and not the Prem.

I like Jovon, really happy he has already scored three goals in pre season. Maybe he just needs some confidence to prove to himself that he can be a decent Lge One striker? He has all of the attributes to be successful so for me he will partner House for the start of the season unless we get this supposed loan forward in. Looks like Street, Moylan and Draper will be on the bench.

Back where we belong, can't wait.

0-0 all over this. We have no strikers and have a solid backline.
Are you? 10 of the last 40 years have been at this level so wondering what you constitute as how/where you belong?

I don't think anyone could really argue that we're a tier 3 side over the course of history. We were in our usual place before crook after crook got involved with our club from the early 2000s and took us to the brink of extinction.

So happy to be back.

If you’re looking over your entire history, fair enough. I guess I’ve always seen you as a L2 club but that’s just my history of Rovers / Wrexham I guess

Unless we sign a very good forward before the weekend we'll struggle.
3-1 Wycombe. Expecting a slow start to the season before recovering to a mid-table finish

I think the Hollywood magic must be rubbing off on us, we are apparently taking 1000+ to what I believe one is now supposed to call the STōK Cae Ras.

We never travel well to anywhere more than 2 hrs drive away, typically we'd take somewhere between 2-400 to anywhere further than that.

Certainly the one time I did go to Wrexham, we took a whopping 141 (yes, I was sad enough to look it up) so there you go - it's not just the home side that have a bunch of daytrippers buying tickets...but then there's me on my soapbox, yet I'll be safely watching it at home on the live stream, so maybe I should avoid trying to claim any moral high ground.

Average historical finishing position is 3rd in league two. I'd say in terms of fan base and size we've always slightly underachieved.

Probably about right, but the sidequest element is certainly not underrated either, and nor should it be.

Anyway, with Stockport typically being shit on opening day, and us having done well for the last however many years, surely that's a home banker on the slip right?

Think tomorrow night will really show where we are and i’d be surprised if it were anything other than a comfortable barnsley win, there aren’t the harrogates, notts county’s and newports where we can just turn up and win any longer.

We’ve injuries in key positions, and as mentioned before maris will be a big miss.

We’ve a kinder run of fixtures after this game so a draw would be wonderful.

Just the 10 injuries for this normal club. Not an exaggeration either like when Mansfield fans say they have injuries and it means like three or four.

Southam Hales, Olaofe, Fiorini, Powell, Mellon, Adaramola, Knoyle, Stretton, Connolly and Rydel.

I imagine our team will be something like

Hinchliffe/Addai (Challinor giving nothing away)
Mingi Horsfall Pye
Fevrier Collar- Bate- Bailey Touray
Wootton Diamond

It's actually still a decent eleven. Barry, Camps and Sam Hughes the only other senior outfield players fit and not sure Barry match fit enough to start. The rest of the bench will be youngsters unless we bring someone in before the weekend.

A reasonable pre season, the addition of some pace in the squad and new season optimism makes me think a home win.

Our usual crap opening day results, not knowing our best 11 and an expectation of beating Northampton T means a home defeat.

Heart always wins the decision....2 - 0 Home Win :err:

Wow that's quite the list. Are some of these long standing injuries?

Southam Hales was from last season, think he'll be Autumn time. Knoyle is 3-4 months. Adaramola is 6-8 weeks. Mellon we thought may have been ACL but the word from the fans forum apparently was that it hopefully won't be that bad. I think he's back at Burnley getting treated as he's their player so don't know if we know full extent.

The others I think should be back in the next few weeks.

But the rate at which we get them is madness so we'll pick up more by the time some are back.

I'm pretty certain we'll bring in a RB/RWB because two of the more long term ones in MSH and Knoyle are right backs.
