TLOU is absolutely worthy of finishing so high, and in fact I'd say that it probably should have finished higher, which sounds crazy but it really is just that damned good. I mean, fuck me, I've already played it, but so many times I've come close to buying a PS4 just to play it again with the remastered edition. I've heard of people buying a console just for one game... but I'm always tempted to do if just to replay a game that I've already played.

Super Mario 64

Released: March 1st 1997
Platforms: Nintendo 64
Metacritic: 94/10
Copies Sold: 11M+

Super Mario 64 is a platform game developed and published by Nintendo.

In the game, Mario explores Princess Peach's castle and must rescue her from Bowser. As one of the earlier three-dimensional (3D) platform games, Super Mario 64 is based on open world playability, degrees of freedom through all three axes in space, and relatively large areas which are composed primarily of true 3D polygons as opposed to only two-dimensional (2D) sprites. The game established a new archetype for the 3D genre, much as Super Mario Bros. did for 2D sidescrolling platformers. In the evolution from two dimensions to three, Super Mario 64 places an emphasis on exploration within vast worlds that require the player to complete multiple diverse missions, in addition to the occasional linear obstacle courses as in traditional platform games. While doing so, it still preserves many gameplay elements and characters of earlier Mario games

I've watched The Last of Us, but borrowing it soon so will give it a play through.

Loved Mario 64. Nintendo just did everything perfectly, and we've not had a 3D Mario platformer as strong since. Mario Sunshine being the closest to rivalling it. Many would probably say Galaxy for that, but I never could get in to it. Did it even make this list? If Oaf had sent one, I'm sure he'd have had it in his 20.

I think we've got the top three I expected, just not necessarily in the order I hoped. GTA5 is clearly going to beat Ocarina of Time, even though it's nowhere near as good a game.

Last of us was my number one. Such an immersive experience. The DLC was pretty tragic.

I had a couple of CoD games in my list, that period of cod4 and the few years after really was the apex of online gaming for me, so many memories with mates, perfect blend of competitiveness and fun.

Argh, just when you think all of the Nintendo fanboy games are dead, Mario 64 comes along to ruin it.

This being said, at least it's still a game that's fun to play today (unlike shitty Goldeneye, ent it) and it's obviously left a hell of a legacy, changed platform gamining, yada yada, etcetera.

But yeah... OOT is still to come too. Damn you 64 fanboys.

Nah, while I appreciate that Galaxy is a hell of a well made game (and the only Mario game I've ever actually been bothered to complete) it wouldn't have made my list... basically, platformers just aren't what I'm into. So while I enjoyed it, stuff like TLOU just appeals to me a heck of a lot more.

I love both Mario Galaxy games. I think like a lot of Wii games though, they tried to incorporate the technology a bit too much as if to showcase it. Just think too that both Galaxy games dont expand enough on what 64 did right. In terms of the 3D platformer, I dont think Mario 64 has been bettered.

Mario 64 has not aged well. Sunshine is still the best 3D Mario effort.

Never liked Mario.

My favourite Mario was SMB2 which wasn't even a true Mario game, it was a re skin of another game. Even then I didn't like it that much.

No fuckin' way. Wanna know how I know that ain't true? Because I played both of those two for the first time in my life within about a month of one another. I completed FFVII and consider it one of the best games ever, despite it's age. If I get out of Nintendo fan trolling mode for a second, I can actually admit that I can see why Goldeneye was highly regarded for it's time... but now, after modern FPS has done it so much better on consoles, Goldeneye is distinctively behind the times. I mean, one analogue stick to control it... that alone puts it in the historical section for me.

As a matter of fact, I use FFVII and Goldeneye as my two main examples of games that have or haven't stood the test of time any time I'm discussing the matter. Night and day between them.

You can circle strafe using the C buttons on Goldeneye. ;) If you're saying Goldeneye is distinctively behind the times compared to modern FPS, how can you not say that about the blur that is FF7 compared to modern RPGs?

To be honest, I don't think Goldeneye is the best ever game for ageing well but personally I can still play it with mates, can still do the 1 player and it's still enjoyable. Matter of opinions I guess. I still enjoy quite a few N64 games like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. I think in terms of ageing well video games 95-2000ish is retrospectively an awkward time for 3D as the cruder 3D graphics of the N64 had that novelty excitement at the time that they don't have now. Lower spec 3D PS1 games like FF7 stand up even worse now! Not saying people can't like it. I appreciate games like Majora's Mask still. You have to use your imagination a bit compared to the lush HD 3D of modern games but that's part of the charm in a way.

For similar reasons the SNES and Gamecube are probably better now for retro gaming than the N64. The SNES was the peak of 2D gaming. The Gamecube graphics and games like Wind Waker, Melee, Mario Sunshine still hold up very well. They also load up faster than more modern games because of the small discs, you don't have to connect to Xbox live, do updates, download DLC and all that either. The SNES offers a lot of 2D platformers etc that you just don't get with the endless production line of FPS games available on the 360. Very good if you want to dip into something for 10 mins or so rather than exploring an entire city/planet.

Goldeneye was a groundbreaking and incredible game in 1997 that, like Perfect Dark, has aged like dog shit. FFVII was never even that good to begin with and still isn't now, so I suppose you're right.

MW2 in 7th :ffs: Is it possible to set the forum, and all of it's contents (ie. whoever voted for that nonsense), on fire?

Also, I agree with Jockney. Sunshine was the shit. And so was the GameCube.

The GameCube was amazing. Not because of the graphics but because of the art design, though the graphics were very good for that gen.

Last request, you seem to be conflating technological advancement with progression in quality. Gamers, actual gamers, have never cared about graphics or physics engines. Depending on the genre, if It controls well, has some nuance, is well paced and has a good story or characters, all of the other stuff is irrelevant. Just look at dark souls - it's clunky as shit and looks like someone smeared Vaseline all over the screen compared to other triple A titles, but it's beloved or at least respected by anyone who has been playing games for longer than four years. Goldeneye was loved for its multiplayer and its innovation in gameplay (contextual hits etc) but that became the standard a few years later and it has been long surpassed. Final fantasy VII's appeal was its story and narrative and that it hit an apex in the jrpg genre that has been rarely rivalled since. They are chalk and cheese and the former will be forgotten long before the latter.

Agree with Jockney, I think controls/ graphics only really become an issue, is if they are so bad that it is then detracting from the game itself.

Surprised so many are saying that Mario 64 hasnt aged well, considering its nearly 20 years old, I still enjoy playing it every now and then from beginning to end. Compare Mario's transition to 3D, to Sonic's with Sonic Adventure...okay SA is probably slicker and controls much better, but on the whole its just not as good a game. And it had Big the Cat. GTFO.

Was thinking just from the next gen, the isometric 3D games like that had been around since the Speccy!

And Sonic 3D was shit anyway!

I think it was a sign of Sonic turning shit in 3D. They never really made a good game after Sonic 3. Never got Sonic 4 so can't comment on that.

Sonic 4 eps 1 & 2 are okay actually, they go back to the 2D basics, so they're more like the old Mega Drive Sonic games than anything since.

I thought Generations was good actually, definitely the best Sonic game since the Mega Drive. The last boss was bloody awful though. Heroes, Colours, Unleashed and the the one on the Xbox were all terrible.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned 4, never played Generations properly, but the adventure games and Heroes put me off for life I think.

Though I must admit, Adventure 2 did have a little charm that kept me interested for a bit.

Adventure 1 & 2 are just okay I think. Some great moments in both, some absolutely awful moments! But on balance, they are alright! I would recommend giving 4 and Generations a go though.

Nah, that doesn't sound right, because I remember the N64 being big and I can't possibly be that o...

1996 release date?

Holy fuck. We're all old.

Still think it's an enjoyable game, but the 3D camera is horribly awkward (a given considering it was one of the first, if not the first, to implement it), it's very repetetive and it looks like shit -- not because it's graphically substandard (although those low rez textures do not suit the game at all) but because the words 'colour scheme' were not in Miyamoto's vocabulary back in 1996 apparently.

You've honestly got the wrong guy for that kind of thinking! It's the opposite of my thinking really.
