Based on pure gameplay it is one of the best games of all time. Still left slightly annoyed by the lateness of heists and some problems on launch which is why I didn't vote it in. But then if you buy the game now, you will enjoy it.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Released: November 21st 1998
Platforms: Nintendo 64 and 3DS
Metacritic: 99/10
Copies Sold: Dunno

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Japanese: ゼルダの伝説 時のオカリナ Hepburn: Zeruda no Densetsu: Toki no Okarina?) is a 1998 action-adventure video game developed by Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development division for the Nintendo 64 video game console. It was released in Japan on November 21, 1998; in North America on November 23, 1998; and in Europe on December 11, 1998. Originally developed for the 64DD peripheral,[11]:5 the game was instead released on a 256 megabit (32 megabyte) cartridge, which was the largest-capacity cartridge Nintendo produced at that time. Ocarina of Time is the fifth game in The Legend of Zelda series, and the first with 3D graphics. It was followed 18 months after its release by the direct sequel The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

In Ocarina of Time, the player controls the series' trademark hero, Link, in the land of Hyrule. Link sets out on a quest to stop Ganondorf, King of the Gerudo tribe, from obtaining the Triforce, a sacred relic that grants the wishes of its holder. Link travels through time and navigates various dungeons to awaken sages who have the power to seal Ganondorf away forever. Music plays an important role—to progress, the player must learn to play and perform several songs on an ocarina. The game was responsible for generating an increased interest in and rise in sales of the instrument itself.

Boooo, so Nintendo fanboys win the day.

That being said, I actually quite liked OOT on the 3DS when I played it. Never completed it though. And I don't even consider it the best Zelda (Wind Waker FTW) let alone best game but it's fine and obviously has a heck of a legacy.

Never played it as it wasn't my time, shame as along with 64 it must have even pretty cool to play them at the time, both ground breaking for the future of gaming.

But oh well, Bloodborne is more than good enough so it'll do :box:

DO EEEEET!

If only because this time I get to vote so this time it'll matter. :eek:bama:

But seriously, perhaps we should wait before that gets going. Two game lists on top of one another may be a bit much.

Ha ha! No problem, as I do think some of this list was skewed slightly because some people like me tried to limit one game per series in my top 20, while others voted for multiple titles from a series.

Wow, never expected Ocarina of Time to beat GTA V, although it clearly deserves to. Pleasantly surprised a game of this age with plenty of younger people voting has managed to top the list.

On another note, I think I'm going to start taking in lists for the Top 100 TV Shows tonight.

Not played OOT in well over 10 years but I do remember loving that game. Hated Majora's mask though. Kinda wish my N64 still worked

Yeah, even though I didn't vote this was still a good read. Well presented and all that jazz. Cheers Cassius.

Gameplay? You mean the clunky running physics, the by the numbers cover system and and the lack of a functional free-aim? Yeah, great...

It's horribly written, the characters are unlikeable and the missions are repetetive and unoriginal. Its biggest sin, though, is that it's a beautifully designed and rendered universe with nothing in it. There is nothing to fucking do!

It has the best story by far of any GTA game, three unique and interesting characters (only problem I have is that it seems too focused around Michael than the other two, especially in terms of full story arch). The missions aren't that repetitive, I doubt there was any mission that you had to do more than two variants of.

"Nothing in it" ... It's a completely open world with lots and lots to do. Like Minecraft, how much you can do is down to how much creativity you have. A game doesn't need to be on a set path with set objectives, cut scenes etc to be a good game. Added to the fact there are millions of user created tracks, missions etc - If anything there is too much to do.

I also thought that GTAV was vastly overrated. I never felt compelled to just go around and mucking around which was always the great appeal of earlier GTA games. I also never really felt that connected with the characters, I would have preferred to just have one central character that I could develop. Another disappointment for me was the heists. They had huge potential to be a really excellent part of the game but there was not enough and not enough variation, I feel this feature was criminally under-utilised. Saying that, it was still a good game but I think it just fell short of being a great game.

I wish I still had mine. I have very little interest in playing single player games these days, but I still enjoy multiplayer games of Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64 and Smash Bros.

I'm not saying it's the second best game of all time - it didn't make my top 20. But it's certainly not a bad game, and I perhaps should have put it in my top 20 too, though I think longevity does help to extend how good I feel a game is.

It was always going to be overrated as it was hyped as being the greatest game ever. Was never going to reach that universal acclaim even if it really was that good.

It got 3rd for me I think, so I can't say anything. I personally loved it, played through on both the 360 and the One...

Must be tough not being able to feel the magic of Nintendo fandom. I feel sorry for you man, I really do.

Thanks for running this Cas.

Going back to the "video games that have aged" debate, WatchMojo recently did a top 10 of games that have aged well and 10 that have aged badly. Check them out:

Agreed with that games that ages well video, but resident evil & FFVII haven't aged all that badly at all. I think the criticisms of Mortal Kombat were a bit stupid too

Oh and thanks for running this Cas

Most of those games have just aged. For a game to age badly, its selling points need to have been far surpassed by its successors.

FFVII: it wasn't praised at the time for its character models, it was praised for the depth of its story and gameplay, all of which have aged exceptionally well.

Silent Hill: terrifying experience then, terrifying experience now. Subsequent Silent Hills controlled just as awkwardly.

Tomb Raider: combat wasn't even good for 1996. People loved its level design and how immersive it was.

Crash Bandicoot.... really? It still looks great. The controls are also really responsive.

I think the badly aged ones are mostly unfair. Okay I havent played all of them, but for the most part, Metroid aside, they seem to be being picked on for mostly graphical issues. Given that pretty much all of them were pretty innovative at the time, and there will always be bugs with something new, I think thats quite unfair. The criticisms of GTA3 for example...considering that model has been followed in every GTA since, Saints Row etc, Id say there was nothing wrong with it, it just was a bit ahead of its time. Likewise criticising Star Wing for not being as good as Star Fox 64...of course it wasnt! And if you were so bothered about not being able to target, you could switch your viewpoint at any time. That was one of the things I loved about it at the time, I could switch to first person when there were lots of enemies, or go 3rd person if it was more a section where I had to dodge obstacles.

I also completely disagree on Mortal Kombat, I always much preferred MK to Street Fighter and still do. The idea of using actual actors and capturing them to be the characters in the game was also pretty unheard of at the time, and given the graphical capabilities of the Mega Drive and SNES at the time, I always thought they looked good. Using that technique is pretty much a given these days. The recent Tomb Raider reboot actually had all the main characters voice and performance acted on green screen. Every set piece in the game is effectively a stage show converted into computer graphics.

I dont know, just seems unfair to judge something on what was available at the time. It would be like criticising a Spectrum game for having 'rooms' instead of side scrolling.
