It's a tough one this. Danny Webb has been nothing but professional throughout this shitshow, he speaks really well of the club and you get the feeling he has the complete support of the players. That said, you have to say in our current position we would probably benefit from a bit of experience and could we really say no to Paul Cook if there was a chance to bring him back?

I guess we'll see how it plays out in the next few days but whatever happens, i hope there is a role for Webb going forward, the bloke does not deserve to become a victim of Rowe's wrong doing.

I really don’t think Danny Webb wants the managers gig anyway. I think he is much happier being an assistant and would jump at the chance to assist Cook, which I think has the makings of a very good partnership!

Maybe the Chancellor has had to sign off on it.
Well this was apparently the stumbling block last time round so they must have sorted something. I know he wants to get back into work but I can’t see why he’d stop his compensation pay from Ipswich which is likely to have been an absolute wedge for what he’s going to be getting whilst managing us?

Wouldn’t make sense that

Perhaps the stumbling block was we thought we were going to have to sack Rowe, and pay him in the region of £50k (or so I’m told). He resigned and took a small settlement (£10k). The freed up money either means we can afford to sack Webb (harsh) or afford to keep him on the staff (more likely) whilst employing Cook and Roberts.

Cook is obviously a very good manager, but I reckon Ches would be better off not rocking the boat at this point. If they want to go up this season, at least.

It’s so obvious from the interviews that Webb has done that he doesn’t want the job permanently. I don’t think he’d enjoy the pressure of management and is much more happy being a coach.

Cooks league winning experience is exactly what this group of players need now. With Webb staying around behind the scenes that will give a sense of continuity anyway because he knows the players inside out which will help Cook in the short time hugely

We've been rocking the boat, almost sinking the ship for years! I don't see that changing any time soon. Half expecting us to announce Steve Evans or something

Not on a wind up to be fair, I've got no reason to be. Just been told this by someone who knows his stuff.
I’ve been told tonight it’s all but confirmed now for him to return so I guess we’ll see very soon what’s true and what’s not

It'd be a hell of a coup, given he was basically considered as one of the best managers out of the top 2 tiers before his move to Ipswich. Chesterfield would have to be considered favourites if he went there.

I hope my source is right.

If he’s confirmed, there’s a few variables that are key for him hitting the ground running IMO.

Number 1 is that Danny Webb HAS to stay. He knows the players inside out, and has been a huge part of our strong first half of the season. He has an incredible relationship with the dressing room and that’s key for keeping it a happy place.

Number 2 is that I think initially he may have to adapt from his preferred 4-2-3-1 in the short term and continue with the 3-5-2 system that this set of players are so used to. I think he can then gradually begin to bring his system in, using it against weaker opposition at home for example initially.

He’s the best manager I’ve seen at CFC, he generally had us ready for the championship with the squad he’d recruited and developed… if only the board had backed him and bought Daniel Johnson in permanently (for a measly £50k that they refused to pay… and now look at him!!) as well as keeping our top scorer Eoin Doyle in January… or at least replacing him, but they didn’t and we paid the price in the play offs.

Looks like it should be announced tomorrow!

Buzzing! Hopefully Danny Webb will be part of the set-up.

Pray for Quigley.

I think that’s a potentially fantastic appointment and clearly some coup, but might actually make it less likely you go up this season. If that makes any sense.

Not really.

Less likely than what scenario?

Pretty simple no? Cook is obviously an excellent manager, but I’m not convinced he shares many footballing principles with Rowe at all from what I’ve seen of his sides in the past (mostly with you and particularly Portsmouth). Totally different formation, much less direct. More stylish, less efficient.

Maybe he’ll be able to adapt for the rest of this season to get you over the line, or maybe your players are good enough to take on new ideas quickly, but who knows?

Maybe he really didn’t want it, but I’d have been tempted to give it to your assistant until the summer. But then if you’ve got the chance to get Cook in now, you probably have to take it.

Well reasoned post. But like you say, if the option to get him is there then we’ve got to take it. He is a League 1 manager as a minimum.

Gotta admit I am a bit slightly concerned for similar reasons to Jacob, as well as the fact Cookie doesn't really have NL experience. Hopefully the huge lift it'll give everyone to get such a legend back in will push us over the line though, you never know.
