It'd be a risk whomever we appoint. Ian Holloway is the fans' favourite simply because he has a bit of charisma about him and a fairly good track record. The big question mark over him is his recent disastrous stint at Millwall and whether that has finished him as a manager.

There aren't too many decent candidates around for us, in truth. But Cook is one of them and I'd happily see him as our manager, even if some of our other fans would be underwhelmed by his appointment.

As much as I admire Holloway, him being a club legend here and all that, I think his heyday as a manager is over. He looked a broken man after Palace. I was surprised to see him take the Millwall job, which is a tough challenge, so quickly.

Don't think it'd be the right move for you lot unfortunately. Sure, it's possible he could rejuvenate the place, but I get the impression that he's not the manager of his Plymouth/Blackpool days. Someone like Cook would be a far more sensible option.

If Cook goes, he'll have his reasons, i'll be gutted but thankful for all he's done for us.

Fucking stinks how Portsmouth have played this though and it leaves a real bitter taste, right on the eve of a massive few weeks for us. He'll probably go at some point because that's how football works and in Cook's own words, there's no loyalty in the game anymore (that's not a dig at him for the record).

May Portsmouth FC spend many more unhappy seasons in League 2.

I'm still hopeful there'll be a definite rebuttal from Cook himself tomorrow morning but I wouldn't bet on it.

Cook is pretty much everyones favourite now, I did want Holloway but you can't fault Cook's record in the last few years.

It is disgusting on our part though.

If you don't get Cook you can always go for Paul Cox. Can still have PC on the tracksuits at least

Or if our PC goes we can get the other?

That clown would probably apply for it too.

The timing is fucking appalling from our point of view.

Yep, CFC and our fortunes are no concern of the Portsmouth board, but some manners wouldn't have gone amiss.

The day after our season ends would have been fair enough - it's not like you've anything to play for.

We haven't got anything to play for but you can bet that we've already got transfer targets lined up and the sooner we can get our respective manager to run the rule over them, the better.

It's not like he's certain to go anyway. I remember back in 2008 when it seemed certain that Harry Redknapp would leave us for Newcastle but ended up staying until he spent all our money. We lost Steve Cotterill to Nottingham Forest a few seasons ago back in the Championship too and whilst we didn't miss him at the time, he'd probably have kept us up that season unlike Michael Appleton.

Although from a Chesterfield perspective the timing is awful I can see why Pompey have done this now. Need to get a new manager in as early as possible to give him a clean slate with signings. What if Chesterfield make it to the final? Thats the 24th May and close to a month after the League 2 season finishes (barring playoffs). With the volume of players available without contracts that is too long a delay.

Someone on our forum reckons we've interviewed Cook twice this week, he's been on the forum a long time so don't think he would lie but does seem abit hard to believe.

Allen's odds have shot down.

According to our local snooze we have a 5 man shortlist but will be waiting until after the League 1 and 2 semi finals before any appointment.

The 5 man shortlist includes Martin Allen, Paul Cook and Phil Brown. I'd take a punt that Darren Ferguson may be one of the others, Wilder is not on the list though.

Why would Portsmouth fans not want Gary Megson might I ask? He's exactly what you need, he rescued our sinking ship in League One, made Hillsborough a fortress, has a good eye for a player and only lost his job because he fell out with Milan Mandaric. Did a great job at Bolton too, despite their fans hounding him out for Owen Coyle which I expect they deeply regret now. He's also a man with a number of promotions on his CV.

Because he's a dinosaur whose teams play horrible football. I've already been bored to death by League Two at times, I wouldn't want Megson anywhere near here.

Cook is now 1/10 with the bookies. I've heard he'll be coming here whether Chesterfield get promoted now or not given that McClaren is staying at Derby now.

It's not horrible football at all, yes it's a little direct at times but you will never have looked as dangerous from set pieces. Paul Cook would be a good appointment for you no doubt about it, if Chesterfield fail to go up I think he'll jump at the chance.

It's not going to be Martin Allen as he's signed a new contract with us.

No, sadly it looks like it's going to be Paul Cook.

What if Cook takes you up? I'd hate this if I was a Spireite. He can't be fully focused on the Play offs.

The Timing was shocking but it's been stated many times already and we can't change that now.

As for taking us up, it's highly unlikely.

And with Chesterfield losing today he should be our manager by the end of the forthcoming week.

Lots of different sources saying it'll be done this week, he's bringing backroom staff too which is much needed.

I reckon that's a really good appointment, without stating the obvious. Experience of managing in this league, done a very good job in it to and seems to get the most out of his players as well as knowing the right players to bring in.
