A combination of a couple of loan signings to give us some much needed depth as parkender says, and it taking a bit of time to get the balance right playing a 352 at this level. It's possible, we've only ever started in a 4-4-2 set up so far this season but have tended to switch to 4-3-37 on about 60 minutes in order to help see games out/gain more control in midfield.
Kayal and Stephens have been crucial in providing the energy in the middle that allows us to play 2 up top, but I do think the 4-3-3 might better counteract your less conventional formation as you suggest. We're also slightly depleted in the wide areas atm with March our only fit "true" winger. Either way, we're likely to have to adapt to a slight change in personnel/system tonight.
What do you reckon's been the main reason for the recent improvement and resulted optimism among City fans of late? Seem to recall a lot of discontent over the lack of transfer movement during the summer, Cotterill looked like a beaten man after the first couple of games. Just taken a while to find your feet again at this level?
In league 1 we were able to push both wingbacks right up the pitch and strangle teams in their own half, but with the extra quality on show in this league you can't get away with that and we were being destroyed on the counter attack. We've had to learn to be a bit more streetwise and pick and choose our moments to go forward, (when one WB goes on, the other holds back to form a back four, for instance). A couple of times lately Derrick Williams, a more defensive option, has come in for academy graduate Joe Bryan on the left to make us a bit more solid, including against Forest on Friday, and he may well start again tonight.
It's still a work in progress but we're getting there steadily. I do think 352 can be effective at this level, and, barring any disasters like Kodjia getting a long term injury, I can't see us being in any danger this season. Hopefully get a nice solid mid table finish that we can look to build on next year with the new stadium reaching completion.
What about your lot? It's a bit too long now to just be described as a good start, what do you rate your chances of staying up there for the long haul?
