Port Vale have tonight announced the departure of manager Bruno Ribeiro after crisis talks following another horror show against Walsall.

1 win in 11 has seen Vale slide down the table and his stubbornness to move from his strange tactics have seen fans lose patience.

Michael Brown will take charge temporarily and will be given the plan b money to bring in experienced English players.

Delighted!

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Bruno started quite well but couldnt buy a result away from home and did nothing different to try change that and as soon as the home form started slipping aswell he again didnt do anything or change anything. He really is a poor manager and his record of being a manager at various clubs for 6 months or less is still in tact. I think some of these players in the end stop playing for him as they knew he would be gone soon.

We need an experienced manager brought in to try keep us up. Id personally go for either kenny jackett who did well at wolves and millwall or micky adams the only manager to get vale promoted in the last 20 years.

So, the experiment didn't work then.

This experiment didn't but not necessarily down to the signings as such, Bruno was simply a really poor manager with zero tactical ability. Jones who is our top scorer has been stuck out wide and today was defending as a winger! One up front at home, players out of position (he played a left back at right wing against Wimbledon!

The whole thing started very well but went to pot after Coventry beat us at home, rumoured fall outs with Brown and Purkiss and guess what! We have four captains! Who has four captains? Even saw a Ludogorets fan commenting on twitter recently about how it happened there! Living off the promise than his pal Jose will help him out!

Jackett won't touch us, Rowett wouldn't either for example or JFH, some fans are being unrealistic but I would get Adams back until May if possible to stable the mess and help Brown out.

Didn't ever see this situation unfolding, what a shock!

And we go back to the ex Blade brigade after Adams, Page, Bruno and (for now) Brown!

Fucking hell, Vale fans are unbelievable. Adams is the only manager in recent times to have brought stability and success to the club and yet a strong percentage of our 'fan' base hounded him out. Fast forward and having hounded out a decent young manager in Rob Page we are now saying we should go and get Adams back.

If I was Adams and Vale came calling I know full well what I would tell them (and for any of you who are unsure, it would start and end with f)

What's annoys me the most is most Vale fans were happy to say that this season would either be a massive success or a massive disaster and we just had to accept that when it became apparent the route we were taking. I knew when reading this that these same fans wouldn't be able to hack the ride if it went pear shaped

Adams isn't the answer either short or long term. This next appointment is one we can't afford to get wrong. I think there is enough quality in the team with a couple of well judged signings to steady the ship. Onwards and upwards.

Looks like Martin Paterson has left the club too, been a poor signing although never got the fans backing and the abuse he got when he was waiting to come on today probably influenced that.

Gannon was as bad as Bruno... the similarities are eerie.

Gannon was worse than any in recent times and that list includes the likes of Dean Glover, Martin Foyle and Lee Sinnott

You guys are very sweet try and put my mind at rest, but I understand that you'd be mad to pass up the opportunity to make amends for the shoddy treatment out dished out previously.

Nice to see another shambles join the merry throng at the arse end of L1 - it's the only glimmer of hope for us at the moment.

I'm honestly stunned that our pathetic lot are still not in the bottom 4 after stringing a whole heap of useless performances together.

Well hopefully the fact he's gone now gives us plenty of time to turn things around before it got unstoppable.

We have some very good players at this level

Alnwick
Streete
Smith

These three have been consistent all season despite the goals against column! Smith may well go for a big fee in January mind.

Jerome Thomas
Anthony Grant
Ben Purkiss
Sam Foley
Ryan Taylor
Anton Forrester

All quality British players, most have either been injured, banned but are just back or coming back in the next few weeks, we've massively missed Foley in the middle. Really need to keep Grant in January though, we haven't won in any of his 7 league games that he's missed this season including the Coventry, Wimbledon, Bury shockers.

Alex Jones is quality but been used out wide (still scored 10 from there), it's crucial we extend or sign permanent in January.

Sam Kelly is hit and miss, looked superb against Cobblers then anonymous at Wimbledon for example, he has quality, he pretty much single handed could win a goal of the season competition when he does score.

In terms of the foreigners

Kjell Knopps - been decent and played out of position all season
Kiko - has come into the side lately and been superb, the improvement when he came on yesterday was stark.
Big Reg Cicilia - bit hit and miss, want to see him in a two man front line with Jones as think he will flourish with some support, clearly not a lone striker material but 5 goals in the last two and a bit months shows he has something about him.
Paulo Tavares - been the most regular of our foreigners to start but very hit and miss, has real quality but seems to be decent in a more advanced role than defensive midfield where he has struggled with the pace of the game over here.

De Freitas and Amoros both have the quality but probably aren't quite fully ready yet to cement a place, these will be decent in the future though so worth prevailing with.

Mbamba, Shalaj, Perreira, Santos haven't really had a look in yet so difficult to form a real opinion but the fact these guys haven't played when we've been down to the bare bones with injuries suggests they maybe aren't good enough and should be moved on.

We are backing Brown and or the permanent manager in January and are set to be bringing in and shipping out a few (Paterson went last night) to get some English experience in so whoever gets the nod will have plenty of talent to keep us well clear of danger come May as long as they utilise it properly and settle of the off field issues.

With what we have fit for Friday I would go:

Alnwick

Purkiss (assuming he's out due to a bust up with Bruno)
Smith
Streete
Kiko (at home) Knopps (away)

Kelly
Ryan Taylor
Grant
Thomas

Reg
Jones

That's 4-4-2 with players in their correct position and attacking enough to cause problems!

Need a striker, experienced centre half, winger in January minimum.

The only list I can find from a bookies is embarrassing. It is clearly going to be Michael Brown and they know that, yet they have had to come up with other names for the market. So we have.....

Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink - not likely considering every Vale fan is a racist
Micky Adams - not likely considering how Vale fans treated our most successful manager of recent times
Kenny Jackett - the only one off the list I would accept as being progress, but still unlikely he will come to a club like Vale
Ronnie Moore - NO!
Nigel Adkins - never shown any real interest in taking lower L1 sides on

That is the top 5 after Brown but we also have Dougie Freedman, Chris Powell & Paul Ince listed but they can't come for the same reason as JFH. We also have PL legends Ryan Giggs, Frank Lampard, Steve Gerrard and Phil Neville who I am sure will look at our record for treating young up and coming managers right and think Vale Park is the place to be.

I said yesterday that we might as well leave the players to pick the side and if this list is anything to go off, I'm starting to think this might be the best option. Other than that Smurf could just appoint himself of course

Brown will get a chance to stake a claim so hopefully he gets it as it means he has done well in the interim.

I'd bring in Adams or Horton or someone as DOF though to assist him.

  1. What is the obsession with Vale fans and bringing back faces from the past?
  2. Why would either of the above return to Vale considering how they were both treated despite being successful?

Any chance the club will carry on down the European route? I get the euro experiment was supported with the usual domestic faces but would a Micky Adams type and a few more recognised English signings in January spell the end of it after only a few months?

No, our chairman said when that plan B would be implemented in January should Plan A (the European route) fail. Plan B is to bring in experienced UK players (and now obviously an English manager) although I will believe it when I see it. No doubt we will end up with the lower league dross that even L2 sides don't want

Long term it may not die completely, Smurf has created links in the summer spending time at AS Monaco and we spent some time with Benfica so if we keep those links we may still look at that I guess.

We need experience as we have suffered injury after injury with our English lads currently there but I hope we don't give up totally on the lads we have as some have real potential and I feel for them in that they've played under a system that didn't work and due to said injuries been thrown it at the deep end.

Players like Kiko, Amoros, Knopps and De Freitas are good players with plenty to offer us going forward.

Some have been duds like Mbamba and haven't seen much of a few of the others such as Shalaj and Pereira or Mac-Intosch to reallly know if they have anything to offer us.

According to the Rotherham chairman, the terms of Jackett's resignation from them include a clause that means he can't take another manager role for six months. So he's out of any running.
