Considering that the chairmen said he was amazed that this person applied and that the players who have left would be crying when they saw who it was I'm a little underwhelmed.
In saying that, I'll still support them come what may.

Ok, maybe the appointment is worth the risk, but on a 3 year contract? That's a huge pay out if it backfires. I'll never understand why clubs hand out such lengthy deals to managers when most players are on 1-2 year deals maximum.
Tbf, you just stick clause in the contract like most Clubs do.

Any Chairman/Board worth their salt aren't going to risk having to pay out 1+ years on a contract.

Are we going to change the title of this thread and use it as a place to discuss all of the fantastic European talent heading across to Vale Park?

Paulo Tavares has decided that the Portugese top division is no longer where he wants to be and according to Portugese press, he is heading to Vale. Clearly the lure of Burslem is just too much.

And the more bizarre rumour for today is that we are working on striking loan deals for 2 players from Monaco with Monaco paying their full wages during their loan period.

Let the Portugese rollercoaster ride commence

Am I the only one feeling a bit optimistic after the debacle of the last 4 weeks?

Nothing is certain yet but Smurf seems to be pulling a few rabbits out of hats already

There is nothing to suggest we should be anything but optimistic, but unfortunately there are still a number of Vale fans who seem to thrive on negativity and failure and will always show their pessimistic tendencies to anything slightly different to the norm.

This whole thing might be the biggest disaster in the clubs history, but then again it might be the move that will take us to our highest league position for many years. One thing is for certain, it will be one hell of a ride

Im excited by the rumours etc as its different from the same old boring "linked with so and so released by Colchester" every year.

Its going to be a change and we were stagnating and heading for nose diving to League Two with Smurf refusing to back Page... now we have a budget and at least a chance of doing well.

I don't really know what sort of budgets are banded about at this level, so is £2,500,000 a decent level?

Also, Smurf has confirmed that 13 new players have agreed deals. 9 on permanent contracts and 4 on loan

I'd guess that's a mid-table budget. Ours is 1.5 million.

Pretty much the same as previous budgets I believe.

To put things into context, Doncaster Rover's budget is £4.5M in League Two next season.

Just wondering what your thoughts on this are now?

I wouldn't bother, departed user is currently banned from the forum.

That says enough about him and gives you plenty of reason not to waste your time with him

Pleased so far, handled the Purkiss situation well and seems to have much more of a plan than Page. Page playing 1 up front was so negative whereas Bruno has manipulated it into being quite solid but with a decent goal threat utilising the wingers much better.

Early days but so far I've been impressed.

Port Vale over the last 2 years literally defy logic. Every move Smurfwaite has made in that time has screamed "disaster". Let good players go, brought in misfits, cast offs, random players, foreign managers, foreign players.

But all these moves seem to work somehow. Really can't work out how. I laugh at Smurfwaite, because I think he comes across as a clueless clown on social media. But wether its by luck or judgement, things keep working out. Got to say, fair play.

He is slightly out of his depth on social media (in the respect that he runs it to launch his own personal opinions without considering how it will reflect on the club) however, no-one who makes a lot of money from business can do so by just relying on luck

Have to say I was concerned during pre season at what we were bringing in. No idea how he finds the likes of Amoros or Cicilia for eg but there seems to be a lot of planning gone into this behind the scenes to make it happen. Whoever has guided Smurf seems to have known what he is doing but will say it is early days.

I daresay we will get to mid-season and he will have put his foot in his mouth again at the most inopportune moment. It's become a bit of a tradition with him.

In the meantime can't be anything but pleased with how Bruno has started. The team is playing some exciting football for the first time in a very long time. Bruno comes across as a very likeable person as well, can see why the players seem to enjoy playing for him. Still no idea who we have scouting most of our transfer targets but it seems to work. I also like the fact that he's given young players like Nathan Smith a shot, that would never have happened under Adams or Page even. The time to judge ultimately will be the end of the season but its encouraging so far.

Must say I'm quite surprised by Vale's start, I was quite concerned with the signings they were making but they seem to have supplemented them with some British talent like Anton Forrester who's found his shooting boots again. It's only early days but the signs are promising, I expected a relegation fight for you but maybe not.

I'm not a massive Smurthwaite fan, as I just think he rubs lots of people up the wrong way, however, although I did have my concerns over a unknown manager who lets face it, had a awful previous record, I have to say that I'm presently surprised.

I also had similar concerns when experienced players like O'Conner, Dickinson, Duffy etc.. all left. Then when I saw unknown players from Europe being signed I thought it had a disaster written all over it. But I don't think we've missed these players at all, and the foreign players seem to have slotted in and been better than what we had.

We've had a really decent start but we need to take each game as it comes and I'm not getting too carried away yet, but I will be very pleased if we are in the playoff mix come the end of the season.

Early day's but he's been a breath of fresh air, and miles above Rob Page.

He's tactically astute, makes very good and sensible subs in general, something Rob Page never had a clue about, and when we have given the odd poor performance such as the one away to to Bury he doesn't look for excuses, or say "We go again." like numpty Page did every single time we got beat.
