So your chairman has cut your budget causing a number of your squad and manager to leave, yet will put it back up again for a foreign manager who has a pretty bad managerial career abroad and never managed in England and his only 'redeeming feature' appears to be because he worked with Mourinho?

Surely it would make more sense to go with Adkins or Cotterill?

There is no point trying to work out what our owner is doing or plotting as I am not even sure he ever knows

Haha. Fair enough. Just seems a little odd to me, that said, it could be genius. Time will tell.

One thing we can guarantee is that there will be no middle ground with any decisions made by Smurf. It will either be complete genius or will take us down

I've heard that one of the back up options is Mike Bassett, the ex England manager. Smurf saw a 'documentary' on him and liked what he saw

If it is Ribeiro i fear the worst, can,t understand why these so called 2 Championship managers are even bothering coming to be interviewed if they are only 2nd or 3rd choices.
The whole thing is an absolute fiasco, a lot of what Smurf says doesn,t ring true.
How can it be a plan, for Page to leave there was a domino effect after Sheff Utd sacked Adkins, no-one bar Derren Brown could of foreseen that.
However all i will say as i have said for months i am mighty glad Page has gone, the tedium of his tenure drove me batty.

So you're happy Page, a manager who took us to a comfortable mid-table finish and a flirtation with the playoffs, has gone but fear the worst (i assume this to be relegation) with regards to his likely replacement?

Yes, i fear the worst cos he no experience of League one and his credentials as a manager are cack.
I am glad Page has gone and would like a Adkins, Cotterill type, if the so called Championship managers are true then better than Ribeiro.
Maybe you didn,t go to a lot of the 1-0 away defeats with no goal attempts like i did, Bury, Bradford, Southend etc etc. Scunny game summed Page up, at half time with Barnsley at the time losing to Colchester we could of gone 2 points behind 6th spot. We didn,t have a single shot, Page in a nutshell.

Its looking increasingly likely that its Ribeiro. Perhaps not the first choice of many of us, but I'm prepared to give him a chance if appointed.

Always have to be prepared to give whoever it is a chance otherwise it is just a pointless process. Unfortunately some Vale fans are unable to see this and will undoubtedly be waiting for the first opportunity to jump on the new managers back.

I mean lets face it, there were plenty on the back of a manager who took us to our 2nd highest league finish since Horton nearly got us into the playoffs in 2004 (before Foyle ruined it of course)

Nothing new...not so long ago we had a car park protest to sack our manager at the press conference announcing his arrival (Danny Wilson)

So apparently we have a new manager, assistant and director of football in place along with offers made to 13 continental players.

This could be an absolute disaster but I suspect the ride will be enjoyable nonetheless

That sounds like Notts County last season, it could work but it's happened on numerous occasions where the majority of the foreign signings take a long time to adapt to English lower league football, of course you could get a few gems in there too.

We shall have to see how it pans out, better than the negativity of Page staying and huge budget cuts anyway now it conspires Smurf was never going to back RP and his same old pals act retained list.

I will give Bruno a fair crack and with an English head of recruitment to help hopefully we can make it work. Looks certain a lot of wikipedia research for the signings we will be making!

And not to forget that additional income from sales of letters for names on the back of shirts

1PM Press Conference.

Ribiero seems to be the man... I reckon Brian Little is the head of recruitment.

Ok, maybe the appointment is worth the risk, but on a 3 year contract? That's a huge pay out if it backfires. I'll never understand why clubs hand out such lengthy deals to managers when most players are on 1-2 year deals maximum.

I presume a load of second and third rate Portuguese players are likely to replace most of the players you have lost?

I do feel that this could go one of two ways for Vale, but I think you are more likely to be towards the bottom of league 1 this season. Time will tell.

We will likely have a few Portuguese players but we will also likely have a similar arrangement with Man United to what you did with Spurs as Bruno was recommended and is a close friend of Jose Mourinho and this link up has been discussed.

Its worth the gamble considering we were going to get a budget slashed under Page anyhow, big risk though but fun none the less!

I wish you guys luck!

The Man U link up will be interesting, getting 3 quality young hungry players in on season long loans could make all the difference.

Not the sort of high profile appointment it appeared it might be at one point but Bruno has as much chance of succeeding at Vale as any other manager. The new coach seems to have good credentials and Browny will make a good assistant so let's give it a go and enjoy yet another ride on the magical mystery Vale bus

Peter Farrell is that rarest of phenomena - a former Dale player from the early/mid 1980s who could actually play pretty well. Also a nice guy who got me complementary tickets to a couple of away games.

Good luck to him, aand his new.colleagues.

On balance I'm happy about it. The only thing I'd asked at the start was we did something out the norm rather than the usual rehashed failures that move club to club at this level and Smurthwaite (in spite of all other issues I have with the way he conducts himself) has done that. If nothing else its shaken up the way things are done at Vale and for that reason I'm in full support. If we're going the foreign route with players though I just hope we've got the scouting network in place to do this.

Interesting appointment by Port Vale, must be hoping this guy can work under a budget and with cheaper value abroad you can sort of see the logic, since he'll have better knowledge of foreign players. Of course it's a risk having an influx of foreigners but with the small budget at Vale the other option would be to bring in pretty crap English players so at least this is interesting. Looking at his CV he has a lot of experience at different clubs in a short space of time, that would worry me. However Carlos Carvalhal came to us with 12 clubs in 12 years and has been brilliant.

Agree with most of that, the only thing I'm not to sure on is about Vale having a small budget. I don't know what it is exactly but it's not as small as some people think it is. In fact the chairman recently said now the deadline for players to accept contracts has passed hes putting it up again to the level when we first came up. If you believe him he said when he said he was knocking £800k off our budget it was all some grand plan to get Page to leave.

He will have a head of recruitment to help him as well apparently.

Hopefully we can convince Andoh to stay now, that will be a huge boost.
