Mighty Iron. Super Iron. Another resounding home draw. This time 3-3 versus Notts who started their season poorly. Sneaked through on penalties in the end. Exciting season ahead for us, trying to stay up!

It wasn't our best performance last night, but we did show spells of really good attacking football. What did surprise me was how poor we were at the back.

No chance of a relegation battle this season. We will be there or there abouts.

A deserved, but not entirely comfortable 1-0 win at Mansfield, with the highlight being the goal (25 yarder from Camps).

Not gonna pretend I wouldn't have liked us to win but by far the worst thing from last night was Vincelot getting himself banned for three games, tit.

No surprise for me at the back. Back 3 much of a muchness. Hoping Burgess comes good, he could well do. Wallace is struggling to settle into this formation. McArdle has a lot to prove for me. Fortunately, we look to have signed a good keeper. Clarke and Townsend don't defend well enough for me, even though they are exciting going forward. I said before the Wimbledon game that I did not expect to keep a clean sheet. I fear we will continue to let in goals with this new set-up.

McArdle has a lot to prove for me.
The way some of our fans are going on, you'd think we'd have lost Ferdinand in his prime. He was a great servant for us and I was sad to see him go don't get me wrong. But he didn't get in the team until January last season, and he's past his prime imo. It genuinely shocked me you offered him a 3 year deal and I'm glad we didn't match the length, I'd be shocked if he stays in the team for the term of his contract with you, but will watch with interest.

I'm more pissed off about McArdle going because we blatantly didn't have a plan to replace him rather than because he wasn't in any way replaceable.

Agree, he should have been replaced before the season started.

Did Ripley play for Oldham at one point then?

You lot should have said.
Don't think they wanted to say out due to the amount of howlers he made, funny enough Mr Ripley made one appearance with us losing 5-0 to Hartlepool in the Micky mouse trophy.

Ah, but I remember your lot rolling on the floor and crying tears of laughter when we signed Eastwood. You clearly don't know your way around a good keeper.

That said, Chris 'expert judgement' Wilder booted Ripley out of Oxford after his debut because he was so bad.

Eastwood was shit for us though, it was 8 year ago though so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he's improved dramatically. That been said you're right most of our keepers have been shit in the last 15 years. We developed Pickford though for a season, and he's worth more than everything in this league combined.

Last night was such a strange game. Forest Green were the better team on the pitch but just didn't have the capability to jump that final hurdle. Lee Nicholls was our MOTM again, some truly spectacular saves in extra time.
You can tell Forest Green are truly a non league club poking their head above the water, everything about yesterday just screamed out Non League, and if they could barely handle around 350 MK Dons fans, heaven forbid a team with an average away following gets them away from home.

Last 11 meetings.

Walsall 5 wins
Draws 5
Sufc wins 1

It's safe to say we don't like playing you, we lost 3 games in the league last season after august and 2 of them were you as well as a cup game too.

It's happening again!!

I have to question a 3-year contract for a 30 yo outfield player. I don't know him at all, like you and other fans do, but he looks a bit cumbersome, a bit slow and not particularly comfortable on the ball. Am I all wrong? He can head it and hoof it long, but we are hoping to be challenging again this season. We have a young lad who can head and hoof it. It is very earlier yet and it is not fair to judge him until Christmas time. Apart from being a great servant, what other attributes does he really have?

I'll answer you're first question first, you are right he turns like an oil rig now not just me who has said it. We have started playing out of the back since McCall came in and he struggled with the style, hence why he didn't play until winter, someone tried to claim he was one of our best passers because his hoof was quite accurate, it wasn't players use to have to go half was across the pitch to reach it.

Attributes wise he's a no nonsense lower league centre back, like a poor mans Terry. Good positioning so he rarely gets caught out of position and very good in the air which is still important at this level. Also I can't remember him ever getting sent off which is useful. It would be painful to watch him in the championship though against superior players, like it was with Darby at Bolton on Sunday.

11 changes was a joke and completely unnecessary although we can't beat them with our best team either.

The 11 changes worked.....................eventually. You know what to do next time you play them :bg:

I am sure you would much prefer to play the Wendies for many years to come, rather than the likes of us and Warsaw

Not a great fan of FGR, but they handled our 800 - 1000 without a problem when we went there twice in the conference. Have they regressed?

Just seemed to struggle with numbers we brought, which is certainly a new one for us, running out of programmes, sending the coaches here there and everywhere and not explaining where they wanted them to go, unnecessarily long waits to get into the stadium etc. Not massive issues on their own but they add up.

Thanks for the response, WilsdenBantam. As someone who has worked on oil rigs around the world, the offshore self-turn is extremely slow and conducted by dynamic positioning systems with thrusters at the base. Satellites guide the positioning of the procedure. Other rig turns are conducted with the use of support vessels. I am envisioning your analogy for McArdle and while there is merit in it, may I offer the oil tanker as a second analogy. Problem is with that, a fully laden marine tanker takes 4 miles to come to a halt after engaging "full stop" and then will need support tugs to handle a short turn. Neither analogy seems truly appropriate for a CB in a tight squeeze, even if Doncaster's big old Belle Vue pitch was being played on. I do take your point though and I think we are on the same page about McArdle in this regard.

Interesting point regarding accurate hoofing. I'll look out for it, as I watch Paddy Madden scurry after them. Some interesting points regarding heading ability and discipline too. I agree that these are very important. Plus I absolutely and fully agree with your point regarding Championship quality. It can be a big step up for many players and it is significant factor as to why I question McArdle's acquisition. He has no Championship experience and from what I have seen would struggle in the step-up. Along with his age, this is the main factor why I am wondering why we gave him a 3 year contract. What happens if we do go up this season or next? Maybe he was signed just to get us up.

I'll keep my eye on McArdle and hope he does really well with us. He has been made captain, which can often make a player. I hope it doesn't break him. Some clubs are just suited to some players. We have had plenty of those. I am hoping McArdle is another.

Agree with both of you about Rory McArdle.

Good, solid, no-nonsense defender; excellent for Dale alongside Nathan Stanton, who supplied the pace and "nastiness" to the partnership.

I'd have him back, but I strongly suspect Scunny won't want Niall Canavan back in a swap deal...

Middlesbrough away. Never been. Fancy us to lose comfortably but I hear it's a top class stadium and they are a big club so should be a cracking game. Best tie is Blackburn v Burnley without a doubt.
