Jim Bentley has emerged as bookie's favourite. Of all the ones linked with us so far, if I had to choose I'd go with him. I think he'd keep us up, and he's used to dealing with a small budget. There haven't been any rumours I've heard that he might leave Morecambe but it sounds like their fans are tiring of him and would probably be happy to see him go.

Curle has confirmed that we will be operating on a much smaller budget next season and are unlikely to feature in any promotion shenanigans, and that was his reason for leaving (although he was also probably not expecting to be offered a contract, he had previously indicated his willingness to stay on and if the board tried to keep him at all they won't have pulled out all if any of the stops).

The expectation from many fans is that our board are so tight that they will most likely give the job to academy manager Darren Edmondson. If 'cutting their cloth to fit' is really their number one priority then they would be wise to appoint someone like Bentley instead, his wages might be higher but they're less likely to have to sack him mid-season or start desperately bringing in overpriced crap players in an attempt to avoid relegation.

I can't think of any situation where a young inexperienced manager has come in and done well at a struggling club. You have the likes of Jones, Cowley, Hasselbaink and Nolan who have done well at clubs where the pressure was off a bit, allowing them to flourish, but at the other end of the spectrum you get situations like with Lester, Eames, Hignett and Riza; where they aren't really seen as incompetent and totally responsible by the fans for their team's demise, but rather just seem to be the wrong manager at the wrong time, lacking the experience for the relegation dogfight. Only Ainsworth I can think of has done well, and that's only because Wycombe stuck with him after coming so close to going down, so that could easily have gone the same way as the others. So while some of the managers linked to us would be popular appointments, Aranalde, Murphy etc. We just need someone with experience to keep us up.*

*Bentley is actually a young manager himself but he's had the conditions at Morecambe to gain the right experience, for much of his time they've not been seriously troubled by relegation.

Shaun Derry is a talented young Manager (in his opinion), with a reasonable level of experience (of massively under-achieving).

Yep, Derry's exactly the kind of manager we don't need. His high opinion of himself though, will probably price us out of affording him. He's only lucky that Cambridge are a fairly stable club.

I can't think of any situation where a young inexperienced manager has come in and done well at a struggling club.

Michael Flynn came in when we were 11 points adrift in March 2017.

Carlisle fans wouldn't be happy with Bentley, surely?

The name I’m quite interested in is David Hopkin at Livingston.

He took over when they were struggling, then he ended up winning Scottish league one last season, then this season he’s got them runners up in the Scottish championship with a chance of promotion to the Premier.

He’s worked wonders with a tiny budget, smalller than any league 2 budget,

He was at our game on Saturday.

Nope. I’d give him a chance if he got the job, and he got the best out of Jamie Devitt before we signed him, but no he wouldn’t be my choice.

Fair point, it's not common though, usually the 'let's appoint a former player to his first full-time managerial role and he'll be popular with the fans, inexpensive and might bring new ideas to the job' backfires horribly.

That sounds a bit more interesting that most of the lower league journeymen and former players we've been linked with so far.

I wouldn't be happy exactly with Bentley as manager, he doesn't play great football and would probably strip any creativity out of the squad (apart from Devitt) but part of me thinks, if things are looking that bad for next season, might as well skip the part where we try something different and go straight to the firefighting appointment, though Bentley wouldn't be an option mid-season unless Morecambe sacked him, which is unlikely. At least Bentley now would be better than someone like Graham Westley or Russel Slade in January.

Big rumours that he's going to be announced our manager tomorrow.

I wonder if Steve Davis will throw his hat into the ring, he has bigged up Carlisle in the past, plus I want to be part of the crowd at Gresty Road that self combusts with bile that gets thrown at the fraud, should anybody be daft enough to employ him.

Has he? First I've heard of that and he has no connections with us whatsoever, was he the guy who reckoned we blew Crewe out of the water financially for Jamie Devitt?

If Curle gets the Bury job I’m pretty sure he’ll sign Adams.

Curle is a steady manager, he’ll get you organised, particularly away from home where you’ll no doubt win more than you’ll lose.

It’s the tedious boring football at home that got me wanting a change of manager.

As much as I despise Shaun Derry for sucking the life out of the club I support, he'd be the fit perfect for Carlisle if their BOD's main objective is to stay up next season*. Dull football is a given but he'll guarantee you lot enough points to steer well clear of any danger with his 'safety first' approach to league matches.

Naturally, I hope this isn't the case at all as I quite like Carlisle.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
They should be going all out for the blooming Livingston guy.

For once get someone who is up and coming.......winning probably with a bit of an arrogant swagger to them than as usual go for someone with aims of just 'mistable'

Nothing against Bentley who is working on nothing but he'll be too used currently to just 'doing enough' get someone in who is currently a winner and wants to win.

plus we have a small budget yet of all 24 clubs in this division have one of the largest cheap market of footballers you can get right on the doorstep, granted many won't be good enough but like delving into non-league its knowing your market and getting the right guy is the big key.

we absolute 100% flogged it when we didn't go for Derek Adams and instead went for Keith Curle..........Plymouth go for an arrogant t*sspot with a history of doing better than should at his previous club, we go for a manager who has always at best 'did ok'

Plymouth therefore 'over-achieve', we 'did ok'

The only thing we need is stabilizing and make sure we are not fighting relegation so I'll take that. Sure we'll get the odd fan that will complain if we aren't exciting at home but the last two seasons have been dreadful.

I think the problem with someone like Derry is the season after and the season after that. One of those managers where the longer he is given to build his own squad, the worse their prospects become.

I’m another that would quite like to see Hopkin or someone similar get the job, looks like he’s done a great job up in Scotland and could bring in a few hidden talents.

Yeah, he made out like we were competing against Real Madrid, then 12 months latter we offered Rayners a better deal than the one you offered him. Stay clear of Davis.

I don't really get your belief that we can do well in the Scottish transfer market. The south of Scotland isn't really football territory, you only have QOTS and then much smaller clubs, it's all rugby up there. By the time you get to the central belt where all the football is then you're almost as far from us as Newcastle is, and I don't really see what kind of pull we would have over and above teams like Killie and St Mirren who can offer regular games against the old firm, a better proximity to the big cities and even (well in Killie's case a few seasons ago) and outside punt at European football.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with the wisdom of going for Hopkin, but I'm less sure about Adams, Plymouth didn't over-achieve, this was never their 'level' and I don't buy that we've been missing this fantastic opportunity by not appointing Scottish managers who can suck up all this talent from the great wilderness to the north where there too few decent clubs to take on all the talented players.
