I won't debate the penalty decision as it is irrelevant, because it was missed.

I thought the game was drifting to a nil-nil draw prior to the penalty, which would have been a fair result to that point. Both sides played some decent football but were lacking in the final third, with Carlisle having slightly the better chances. However, after half time I thought we were the better side and a defeat would have been very harsh on us had the penalty been converted.

The penalty miss and Mellon's double substitution changed the game. Smith and Mullin tormented the Carlisle defence, whereas DMH and Stockton had been pretty ineffective, and we looked like scoring with every attack in the closing stages, quite unlike us this season. It was a deserved victory in the end.

Well the ball has to be in the penalty area I think, which it was, but yeah exactly.

No it doesn’t. If the foul is in the penalty area and the ball is outside then it’s still a penalty.

I mentioned that it would have been a red had he prevented a goal-scoring opportunity, and was only a yellow as he didn't as the ball had gone. But if you, as an outfield player went in to a tackle late after the ball had gone and completely upended the opposition player it would be a foul and a direct free kick, the rule isn't different for goalkeepers and it isn't different because it was in the penalty area. On another day the ref might not have even booked him as it wasn't especially dangerously late, but a foul is a foul and there's no avoiding it.

Think that law has slightly changed now when it comes to pens. If it’s a genuine attempt to get the ball and it’s an accidental foul to deny a goal scoring opportunity and you concede a penalty, you don’t get the red card, it’s yellow. They only give the red card if it’s seen as a deliberate foul.

I have just seen the penalty incident again and I don't think it should have been given. There is absolutely no contact between Davies and the forward, who hurdles him while he is lying on the ground.

Most enjoyable match of the season for me, 2 decent teams and some atmosphere. Thought it was a nailed on pen, it was a neat move in the build up, just frustrating it was missed and changed the momentum completely. Bennett was his usual self, cocking up big chances, but he’s still more effective than Stockton who was also his usual self.

We’ll definitely be alright this season, got more than enough to stay clear of relegation.

To be fair to Stockton, he hit a very good long range strike that forced a really good save by Collin to stop it going in.

No I think there's definitely contact. If you see, as Liddle is hurdling Davies, Liddle's feet jerk backwards in mid-air. I don't think that's even possible to do unless there is contact.

Yep, he mucked up the chance and then tried to do the next best thing and get a peno.

Scott Davies reckoned "justice prevailed" and I have to agree.

we'll know whether that's true soon enough as these things are retrospectively punished now. Wasn't a dive though, unless Gary Liddle has the ability to sharply change direction mid-jump, in which case he's criminally underused in the defence of a middling league two team.
