Not that it would change anything in this discussion, but why does that percentage (not just here but everywhere) always come from the average total attendance of a team, and not just it's home support? Those with bigger away areas will have lower percentages then.

If a team had a home crowd of 5000 - 5000 away fans attended (10000 total attendance), and then took 2500 fans away, by those stats they take 25% of their fans to away games, when in fact they take 50% (2500/5000)..

Stats nerd:shut:

Surprised Middlesbrough don't take 100% of their home supporters away... ;)

Again, as standard

I meant factoring in distance when you look at the percentage of home fans going away. It's no surprise to see us, Norwich, Cardiff and Brighton so low down when we have got fairly good home numbers and quite far from most away games.

You're welcome to do it yourself.... And your home numbers aren't good to be honest are they.

Will give it a go, I guess I'd need to use the second table average attendance? They're not great but when you're looking at a percentage of 1400/18000 and 1100/8000 (Rotherham), it's going to skew things!

Can't see any major errors?

The only other major things that would affect this is ticket prices and stadium capacities. It works in our favour as our high prices mean our home attendances are lower than they could/should be. The small grounds are mainly at the top of this table

You can look at stats and interpret whatever you want, that's the problem.

The tricky thing about doing away support is that there are so many variables. Price, location, Sat/Tues, success on the pitch, train route to name just a few of the bigger ones.

You tend to get grounds like Burton and Chesterfield as being fairly favoured by most teams as they're so accessible.

Likewise, even if you factor "location" in, you can't ever build in the rivalry. So Ipswich/Norwich is 40 mins away, but it's their main game so will attract more away followers, whilst the Lancashire/North West clubs have a plethora of clubs on their doorstep so Blackburn might not be as attractive to Blackpool as Bolton or Wigan is, as they can afford to be more choosy.

Being from Rotherham, the relative wealth of the place plays a big part. A lot of my mates decide which games they can afford. Can the same be said for Watford and Reading fans (without wishing to generalise too much).

We're being charged £31 for Middlesbrough in a few weeks. That's the equivalent of a London club charging £100.

I think Walkley does it best. Provide the true figures, and let folk interpret them however they want.

I remember Bury always had the best % ratio (away:home) in League 2 periodically, but that could be easily attributable to their shocking home gates. At Championship level, the same could be said about us, Millwall, Bournemouth and Brentford.

Pretty spot on there MillerWhale! So many different variables but I think in all cases, Middlesbroughs away following is by far the best.

You mention the Norwich/Ipswich games, both have probably taken more away to other games than to the actual derby! Both clubs only gave eachother 2000 for these games, yet we have taken more to Millwall, Charlton, Watford and Fulham

Any chance we could have a table that has us at the top?

Sorry mate, just Googled 'Club with the most fans who have kicked an opposing fan into a coma', no such table exists apparently.

Never a level playing field...

Away pricing also differs from club to club - Leeds fans get hit with Category A+ pricing at every away ground...

For example:
Leeds at Blackburn was £7.00 per ticket more expensive than Boro at Blackburn (ie Leeds fans paid nearly £50K more in that end).
Leeds at Norwich was £40 whereas Bolton were charged only £25.
Leeds at Wigan was £25 everyone else was £20 or £15.

In addition Norwich and many other clubs put on free coaches or subsidised tickets for their fans. Norwich are subsidising £10 per ticket going to Leeds and £10 off coach travel. Wigan fans were subsidised too.

So its never a level playing field especially where clubs have general sale tickets compared with the very few that have strict membership purchasing.

You'd have a point if you yourselves didn't charge ridiculous prices for away fans.

Aren't you the worst in the league for it? Either yourselves or Norwich.

Can't argue with that but whatever the maximum amount is we are getting it anyway.

Supply and demand pal. I'm sure Leeds puts more home fans' bums on seats than Boro, but eventually clubs will cotton onto Boro's impressive support when doing well, and up the prices accordingly.

When away fans at Elland Rd talk about the horrendous prices they have to pay at Leeds they forget that its the same for the home fans as well which seems to go unnoticed...

People make it sound like teams are getting charge £36 and the Leeds fans are getting charged a cheaper price - the price is the same for everyone in that West stand and in the bulk of the East Stand and we have to pay it every home game not just once a season.

This has a direct effect of bums on seat numbers obviously and is why Leeds get stick for home attendance being so "low" ...so again not a level playing field.

If you look at revenues for both home and away attendances then perhaps that's more fitting and telling.

Off me soap box now.

We'd be higher if we didn't offer teams 7,000 away tickets :2thumb:
