Cardiff fans we're quite happy playing in red when they got promotion and were playing in the Premier League.
No offence mate you know nowt, we lost two pals at Coventry years ago (the lot in S2 were amazing after). We played Cardiff away early March just after and they had a collection for the families of the lads we lost. I've been to ninian and latterly CCS and found email to be fucking fantastic, numbers wise they travel further than most of us, they expected nowt this year so their numbers are what they are better than a few worse than some but credit to em

I've never understood the obsession other fans have with our attendance figures. We never have and never will claim to be a well supported club with a huge fan base. The way people go on you'd think we have put ourselves in with the likes of Wednesday, Leeds and Villa. Cardiff always has and always will be a city with a very small core of real fans with a lot of casual goers, and even then there has to be some incentive for them to turn up. I remember when we were getting 12k for a game and that was considered a big crowd.

And Mark, you really have no idea what effect the rebrand had, and it's not a discussion I'm willing to have either. Years later it's still a very fragile subject.

Anyone who watched tonight's game heard the commentator saying the North East is a hot bed of football and means summat different to em

Does it?

cos to me they are like every single one of us, are the Geordies or Mackems that much different to the Plymouth lads, the Gillingham boys or anyone?

Why? I'd be curious to why still thousands upon thousands still don't go even though you have been in the promotion race all season. I understand the fans kicking off about the rebrand but hasn't he backed down over all that now?

He's backed down but a lot of those affected fans haven't. Some of them won't return until he's gone, others don't see Cardiff as their team anymore. Those fans will never return sadly, it's amazing what you can find to fill a void in your Saturday, if you try hard enough. Guy I knew who hadn't missed a single game in over 20 years now takes in the odd game as a neutral, which to me is incredible and quite disheartening. I myself found no affiliation to the club when they were in Red, after all I'd never known us to be anything but blue. That day when he announced we were going back was the same day I bought a half season ticket. But even now I don't celebrate a win like I used to, don't feel down when we lose like I used to. After all I was called a customer when I asked for my refund on my season ticket and would be replaced easily.

Also if Benji is who I think he is he will be able to give you an opinion on it from the other side of the coin.

Maybe they just don't have thousands upon thousands of glory hunting fans like some clubs.

Old Trafford for a cup semi final in the late 1930s apparently, but the 70k is hearsay
I know they had 50,000 at Wembley in ’88, was never aware of them having 70,000 at Old Trafford.

Yeah, I'm up for giving my input.

Supporting a football team like most do requires a level of tricking yourself into believing you and your team have a unique bond. On some level, we all know football clubs have long since transitioned from being communal hubs into being straight up businesses.

When Cardiff switched their colours, it upset me a great deal. And when I tell this to casual or non football fans they don't understand what is so significant about it. But the effect that it had was to break the spell I had allowed Cardiff City to have over me since I was 4 years old.

Vincent Tan had broken the fourth wall; football fans are just customers. Football clubs are no more than an entertainment brands. Cardiff are not a special team, and the loyalty was entirely one-way.

Once that had been broken, it seemed pointless to follow them to such a degree. I went to a game after they swapped back to blue, but it didn't matter. I didn't support Cardiff because they were blue, it was because I thought they were special. And they're not anymore.

Now I vaguely follow several teams I have some connection to. I go to watch Welsh Premier League football some weekends instead. I follow Newcastle for family reasons, and pay some attention to Seattle Sounders for Eddie Johnson related reasons.

Honestly, I'm surprised so many fans returned at all.

Thanks mate and I appreciate the input from someone who has done the opposite to me, even though we both obviously avoided the club when they were red.
Even though your decision contrasted to mine after the switch back I appreciate it greatly. As i said there's a void there in my heart and mind no matter what happens it will never be replaced.
On a differing topic I hope you'll one day you'll once again find your affinity for Cardiff and the communal club they once were.

As for your support of king Eddie, i endorse this 100%.

1,745 Bolton at Burton. Fans fighting between themselves and stewards trying to get to the dugout. More fight than the players showed. Going down.

Record attendance at Old Trafford is a game between Wolves and Grimsby, which was 76962. Just shy of 70k which were Wolves fans. I'd like to see a better away gate than that, if there are any at all.

According to who? There was no segregation back in those days so who came to the conclusion that 70k were Wolves fans?

I’d imagine the actual figure was a lot, lot less. Probably 50% of the crowd were football fans from around the region wanting to watch a big cup game.
