According to who? There was no segregation back in those days so who came to the conclusion that 70k were Wolves fans?

I’d imagine the actual figure was a lot, lot less. Probably 50% of the crowd were football fans from around the region wanting to watch a big cup game.

My grandad attended that game, he has a program which stated there was just under 70k Wolves fans. Since it was nearly 80 years ago there won't be many specific records for it.

There weren't 70k Wolves fans there, my Grandad went and all he heard around him were northern accents. Whilst I agree that Wolves would have brought a good few thousand, there was a good following from the North West who wanted to see a semi final. It would be the same as saying in the first FA cup final at Wembley, there were 90% West Ham in a crouwd approaching 150, 000. Back in those days, supporters wanted to see matches, and there was no such thing as allocations for the two teams only.....nice try though Mark

There would have been thousands of locals at the game. Back in the day when your team were playing away,or not at all, you went and watched the closest game to you. Villa one week, then the blues or baggies the next. If there were as many as 50k wolves I'd be very surprised.

If they were glory hunters I think there would be a few clubs ahead of us to support. In the last few years we've gone up 4 times and relegated 3 times. Aren't glory hunters people who go and suppprt teams who win everything (Man Utd, etc)?

I think I'd also be surprised but it's not a ridiculous statement to make.
Wolves came second in the first division that season (and beat Grimsby 5-0, just saying - with Gary Breen scoring twice) and it was a particularly strong side. Wolves were strong favourites in both the semi-final and the final, which we lost. So Wolves were at their very best.

But the previous weekend, the gate at Molineux had been only 31,498 (against Man Utd) and the next home game was 28,744 against Chelsea. Grimsby's previous home match saw just 10,600 people turn up.
Despite the scoreline, it seems that Grimsby were the better side until their goalkeeper was injured in the 23rd minute. Funny old game, eh?
But back in the day, while locals did go, people still travelled long distances to watch their team.
I suspect most Wolves (or Grimsby) fans don't give a toss how many were from each side - but we often win trivia questions about the biggest ever gate at Old Trafford....

until the 90s all semi finals were at a neutral venue, Wembley then hosted Spurs v Arsenal in 91, that was repeated in 93 and then I think same in 1994, back to neutral venues again until I think 2008?

Dont really understand how taking fans to another stadium which isn't your own isn't considered an away following, unless I'm missing something obvious?

Same as you wouldn't class a trip to Wembley as an away following really, it's a neutral venue and a day out.

My Grandad was from Wolverhampton and he told me when I was a kid that there were 75000 Grimsby fans there and only 2500 Wolves fans........ he was so impressed with our support that that's why he moved here and got my Nanna up the duff.......

It's pretty good especially at £32 but we've had a good 1st season, a very disappointing end but they deserve a decent following to end on. Loads doing the weekend too.

Yeah looks a bit short of the normal allocation we give out. Like you say though, big game and will be close to a sell out, 2750 tickets left in the home end.
