America is hilarious at the moment, albeit in a scary way. A genuine circus where anything could happen and nothing that does happen or is revealed can really be counted as a surprise. In some ways it will be almost a shame when the next election dumps the Twattering embarrassment known as Trump for the Democrats. The opposition could surely put up a trained monkey and would still be a shoo-in after what has happened in the last 10 months or so, never mind what is inevitably coming in the next 3 years.

Still, one thing we have learnt after Trump, Bush Jnr. and, closer to home, the Tories in the last election, never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate, regardless of nationality.

The Republicans have been doing sterling work for ages with voter suppression, so it might not even matter if the Democrats can successfully nominate someone who isn't an app.

Yes, and the Dems can't even unite around single-payer healthcare, despite it being overwhelmingly popular and relevant at the moment. They are an omnishambles. They make New Labour look like left-populism.

America is an odd place, it's like their two choices are the Tories and UKIP...

Whatever your moral take on Kim Jong-Un, he is clearly not the irrational one in this situation.

It's almost as if the Americans are playing the "Good Cop, Bad Cop" routine, with Trump thumping on the table and making all the threats while Rex Tillerson leads a more responsible though understated diplomatic campaign.

US diplomats have quietly and steadily been in contact with their North Korean counterparts. The meetings, led by the US Special Representative for North Korea Policy Joseph Yun have also touched on Americans detained in North Korea.

It is behind the scenes diplomatic efforts that are most likely to defuse the current tension, but what is also likely is that when everything has died down, you can bet your boots that Trump will claim that it was his "tough talking" that made North Korea "Blink first" (as he would be likely to call it).

Trump.? Every time he opens his mouth I think of Albert Einstein's quote: "Only two things are infinite. The Universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the Universe"

I can't think of a more morally unobjectionable candidate for regime change. I doubt any action will have much to do with that though.

What is it that Kim Jon Un actually wants? Is it world domination? The destruction of America?

Because all I see going on here is dick waving. No actual long term plan.

North Korea want to preserve their independence against US aggression. Bear in mind that the US has 30,000 troops stationed in the South, and conducts bi-annual simulations of invading the North. They've also stationed nuclear weapons there in the past.

Remember too, that the US conducted a genocide in Korea during the Korean War - dropping more weapons on the Korean Peninsula than were dropped during World War II - much of it napalm. They massacred a million civilians (some 5% of the population). They also replaced the democratic government with a brutal military dictator - who had many thousands more murdered.

The United States' dealings with DPRK are incredibly perfidious. They've, for example, announced that DPRK has broken nuclear agreements by doing things that weren't even in the agreement.

So North Korea's actions are not exactly irrational. They need to make it clear they're enough of a threat to the US that the US can't invade. Given that their armed forces have a smaller budget than the NYPD, it's quite easy to see why they want to make their nuclear capability well known.

I'm sorry, what? They have the 4th largest active military in the world at 1.2million soldiers. That's not to mention their 600,000 reserves and 5.9million paramilitary personnel (the largest paramilitary force in the world). There's a reason the USA haven't invaded before now, and it ain't China/Russia.

Sorry, got my fact garbled - smaller budget rather than smaller in terms of personnel

True, but most of their (admittedly small) economy is geared towards their military. Propoganda is a strong tool also, we come back to the Allies not wanting to invade Japan by land during WWII due to the sheer amount of casualties (military and civilian) it would have caused on both sides, including mass suicides of the Japanese people.... Same thing here. It took two nukes and the threat of USSR invasion (who obviously weren't as bothered about casualties) to force Japanese surrender in WWII, we don't have the luxury of nukes to use any more as others have them and will use them against a nuclear aggressor, and the USSR ship sailed long ago even if they did exist still.

North Korea will be around until an internal uprising somehow comes to be, until such a time, it will continue to be an aggressor with no real merit, as it would result in a LOT of destruction on both sides, especially seeing as they now (supposedly) have nuclear capabilities.

It's moronic that they're even allowed to carry guns at a protest never mind that the police did nothing when he fired.

I will take the attempted murder thing with a pinch of salt though. I don't think the video exactly shows what the tweet says it does.

To me it looks like he points the gun at him and tries to fire. Then he fiddled with it and shot the ground.
