The first person to get caught up on it was the lecturer by changing every single capitalization to lower case, not the students.
That is because he is the lecturer, it is his job to pick up on perceived grammatical errors.

Am reading 1984 at the minute and that did come into my head with the training every 6 months kind of demands. I guess it depends what constitutes "microaggressions, aggressions, and hate speech" to be fair, if somebody stood up being openly racist (on any public forum from social media to lectures) then they absolutely should be held accountable for example. Free speech shouldn't give people the right to say carte blanche without repercussions.

edit: have only thoroughly read the LGBT+ section but can't see the issue with raising problems and providing solutions, good on them.

Carte blanche.

Noted, thanks for the input. I will remember in future to not include 'without repercussions' after carte blanche and write it out 100 times.

if anything is a suppression of free expression, it's correcting deliberate stylistic choices.

It's really fucking patronising to correct spelling errors if you're not a schoolteacher. It's much more patronising to correct stylistic choices. Besides, it's not really the job of university teaching staff to ensure students spell things correctly and you're a bit of a dick if you do that.

Did the professor know that the word indigenous used as an adjective could be capitalised? Or was he ignorant of the fact and thought he was correcting a grammatical error? It seems like pretty esoteric knowledge. I read the first paragraph of the article and then slowly started losing the will to live, so I thought I'd choose the lazy route of figuring out. Intent of the professor seems important here.

"it's not really the job of education staff to educate students on correct spelling.". Good one.

i had a professor correct my spelling of nigerien to nigerian once when i was clearly talking about people from niger so maybe they should just stay away from fixing grammar and spelling mistakes they clearly aren't too good at it

Apparently some kid tried to steal a gun off a policeman at a Trump rally in order to shoot him, but got intercepted in time. This is just getting nastier.

The Trump campaign and the Republican Party seem to be taking more and more of their inspiration fron English Non-League football (the "Nearly Welsh" as well, if you include Chester and Hereford). His finances and bullshit appear to be rivalling the efforts of Steve Vaughan at his best/worst, with elements of the Crawley "Brothers" and most recently D&R's latest saviour finding their way into the story. The "Vote for me because I'm rich " pitch seems to be threatening to hit the buffers.

and no key rings or fruit machines but he's managing to re-circulate a lot of his supporters donations very effectively back to his own pocket.

It's truly astonishing that he could even get close to president. The lies are astonishing he'll say one thing one day and thenchange it the next, and when confronted he just tells them to f off and his fans love it...they forget the lies. It's like an exaggerated Nigel Farage tell lies but the supporters claim instead that he's telling it like it is.:bg:

He's either dismissing all the information he's being given or he's just so badly informed. The idea of rounding up illegal immigrants (all 12 million of them) and sending them back. How on earth is that viable, hard working law abiding people most with families are going somehow to be rounded up, it's just not going to happen, and thats just one of his policies.

Clinton is awful but in a different way. totally unispiring. But she is qualified and intelligent..you can't say the same for Trump.

It's a pretty terrible choice but clinton will win.

Agreed. One example of his lies that I saw in a debate (probably not his dumbest): Trump has said that in order to be a citizen (and therefore in order to run for President) both your parents and you should be born in America. His mother was born in Scotland. :ffs: :ffs: :ffs: :ffs: :ffs: :ffs:

Tbf minus the fuck off retorts that's probably true for most politicians. I disagree with your sentiment Trump isn't intelligent though, he's got the world on a string atm, you can't do that if you lack the minerals.

Is it really though? We're discussing a country that, within the last two decades, voted in a man who could barely string two coherent sentences together. And furthermore, they did it twice.

Is minerals not slang for balls? Because Trump being blessed with chutzpah, and unburdened by introspection, self-doubt (read: sense of shame, dignity) etc is surely not in doubt. But intelligent?

This tendency to paint him (in the context of this campaign, anyway) as some sort of Machiavellian genius (particularly prevalent amongst Strong Men worshippers like Ebeneezer Goode) is deeply puzzling to me. It's akin to crediting the Ebola virus with the same. He and it are possessed of certain qualities that allow them to thrive in a particular set of circumstances. The idea that there is some impressive calculating intellect at work behind that is madness to me. He is untrammelled id.
