British democracy died this morning, RIP. The majority voted to leave and even though it was a small majority the result should be respected. Corbyn will be wetting himself with glee over this but he'll soon change his mind if May decides to hold a snap general election which will massively increase the amount of Tory MP's to the detriment of Labour who will lose so many seats.

Other than the fact you live in a representative democracy..

Because ze 'heartlands' want Brexit whether you think that is the right opinion or not.

NE - Leave won by a margin of 16.08%
NW - Leave won by a margin of 7.3%
West Mids - Leave won by a margin of 18.52%
Wales - Leave won by a margin of 5.06%
Yorkshire - Leave won by a margin of 15.42%
East Mids - Leave won by a margin of 17.64%

UKIP had been eroding away Labour votes due to the desire for Brexit (and a good bit of racism thrown in too). Now Brexit has been done it would be absolute madness for Labour to opt for a remain stance. They'd be utterly destroyed, wiped out. Labour needs now to educate people away from racist overtones which can be achieved given the wider philosophy that the party now represents. EU favoured the rich & big business which exploited total free movement for their own ends at the expense of working class britons. That's just the reality. For Labour not to acknowledge (pretty sure it's only that man Jezza who actually has) is an insult to the people they supposedly represent.

I also loved the result cuz it was a dagger to the hearts of the 'educated'. Their consent is the most manufactored there is. They believe themselves to be all high & mighty but they're the most manipulated group there is. Subservient wankers who are still believing the lies they've been fed their whole lives.

Fair points, but ultimately, the economic instability created by Brexit (high inflation combined with stagnant wages/no future increases in benefits), and a Conservative Party at odds with workers rights (especially prevalent amongst those negotiating), will cause more harm to the poorest people. The Labour Party shouldn't seek to highlight that in the strongest way possible?

Surely the MPs will take one look at how their constituency voted on Brexit and vote the same way in the parliament? Not a great idea for your political career to vote against the majority in your constituency on a matter as enormous as this.

Will have to avoid the news tonight as if i see a smug Farron or Clegg i will have to buy a new telly  So now we will have to go through parliament to get what we voted for we will let The EU just want we want which will make it harder for us in the negotiations to leave,French president Hollande wants us to pay for having the nerve to leave The EU but the judges have just handed him the upper hand, at least Merkel is being more sensible saying she wants friendly discussions.

No, now the Government will have to actually discuss how we go about approaching Brexit with Parliament, which means that for the first time since this whole fiasco started we'll actually sit down and discuss how we want to go about this instead of soundbites like "Brexit is Brexit". We're leaving, but now we may actually get a discussion of how instead of leaving it to Teresa May.

"We" have nothing to do with it. "We" should be happy that this will be discussed properly not just pushed through with soundbites to get a bit of a short term poll boost.

Has anyone calculated how the result would go if MPs voted how their constituents voted?

That's all well and good, however I suspect there are more MPs who voted to remain than leave, ie it's not their will to actually have that discussion but to abuse their power and block it.

That might be a cynical view but we've basically seen this with the parliamentary Labour Party undermining Corbyn since he became leader, despite the fact Labour members wanted him as leader.

The discussion should happen, you're right. But practically I have concerns about how exactly this will work out now.

Apparently 70% of constituencies were majority leave, so it would be comfortable to continue.

Don't really see the panic surrounding this, unfortunately Brexit will still happen, just a small delay.

To those claiming this is "undemocratic" - it is now going through our regular, democratically voted, parliamentary process.

Just seems like a big news story about very little. Just made for the tabloids.

MPs won't vote to leave the single market IMO, so the leave mob can kiss goodbye to restrictions on immigration.

But those who voted leave aren't racist and don't hate johnny foreigners so that shouldn't be a problem anyway.

Is Question Time in a Brexit heartland like Hartlepool tonight? Because if it is, I can't put myself through that again.

Agree that this is a non-story really. It's not like the ruling is only because it was a leave vote...it's just reiterating how democracy works in this country and has done for a very long time.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
It's interesting that the leavers are so absolutely fucking terrified of parliament (who they were apparently so desperate to return sovereignty to, that they want to stop them having a say...) getting involved.

If, as they should have by now, a solid idea of where to go next, and cast-iron arguments about why this is undeniably the best thing for the country, then they should welcome the chance to win over their critics.

I suspect, seeing as so far their best argument is 'we've kept Nissan for a bit by bribing them with something, leaving us in the same situation we were in before but having to give 'something' up for it' that they know that they safe going to be hauled over the coals before forcing MPs to vote for something that they cannot actually argue is in the best interests of the nation.

When you say leavers do you means those leavers that are Tory? I assume so, given that more or less everyone else wants the government to come before parliament so we know whats gwarnin.

A referendum is a more direct representation of what the British people want just as British parliament is a more direct representation of what we want versus the European Union. It's the same principle. A referendum is a higher form of democracy than a representative parliament, so all that handing this over to parliament can achieve is to further remove the choice from the people.

If, as they should have by now, a solid idea of where to go next, and cast-iron arguments about why this is undeniably the best thing for the country, then they should welcome the chance to win over their critics.

I think it's fair to say that parliament already has a mandate to leave the EU through the referendum victory, if the burden of proof lies with anyone then it should be the Remain side.

It has a mandate but that's all it has...and the mandate will be exercised when the vote takes place I'm sure. This vilification of the judges I find quite baffling to be honest.

I suppose it's just a fear of the establishment fucking them over. That ire has to be channelled somewhere.
