So I think I finished the main story last week.
If the main story indeed ends with you fucking up the Brotherhood for the Institute, or vice-versa, or you completed the Railroad questline. I wanted to do the latter but the game kind of forced me into a corner. A Bethesda move taken to its logical extreme and one of the things I really resent about this instalment.
.

Have since been pottering about in the Commonwealth, trying to explore without the markers, waypoints, etc, looking for more locations, sidequests and minor easter eggs. I repeat: the physical geography and art design are fucking gorgeous. Fuck fidelity, the radiation storms and sheer scale and heft of some of the landmarks (Flight 1981, Libertalia, Glowing Sea, etc) are like nothing I've seen in a video game before. Fully-realised and almost living, breathing monuments to the civilisation that presumably existed before the bombs fell.

But everything else is underwhelming. There is no substance to this game compared to previous Fallouts. I can't think of a single memorable questline I've done so far. It's only succeeded in making me want to play New Vegas again. And I only replayed it again very recently. And it is a far, far richer and more immersive experience than either of FO3 or Skyrim. And I do feel like an idiot for claiming that 3 was superior to NV, in this very thread no less...

NV is my favourite Fallout. If only for Matthew Perry's 'Benny'

If you got the cut scene after
Shaun dying
then you finished it (I also got the same ending as you Jockney).

I hated my character build, the poor dialogue, the never ending bullshittery of "helping" settlements by going to a nearby location and killing 3 ghouls, and all the moany wankers at Sanctuary... looking at you Marcy, you ungrateful fuck. I saved your life, built you a safe home, provided you with clean food, water and a place to sleep without any worry and all you do is bitch at me all day long. Fuck you.

Got tired of it and ended up rushing through the main story 40-something hours in to it, finished the game at level 34 I think. Craving a bit of NV too tbh...

^ Pretty much sums it up tbh.

I'm really getting into this now, although I'm mainly still just pissing around with side quests.

I'm about 15 hours in, level 19 I think.

Yup

I'm very disappointed. Maybe a couple of years ago I'd have been spaffing allover it, but like I said earlier The Witcher 3 has set a new bar for what I expect from an RPG now.

So, after being reyt busy with my new job, and having not been finished with Witcher 3 when this came out, with it being my birthday today my good lady decided to treat me to this and Just Cause 3.

Haven't even fried JC3 yet, been immersed in F4. As a massive fan of the franchise I've been itching to get my hands on it, and as yet I'm not too disappointed. Bethesda being Bethesda though, I'm finding it quite glitchy tbh, really could have done with a newer engine IMO.

The comments of some of you guys regarding the quests disconcerts me though somewhat. I hope it doesn't turn into a chore. Witcher 3 was never a chore, I hope this is the same in that regard.

As for what I've done....Very little in the 4 1/2 hours I've spent with it, just been trying to get my hand in with the crafting system. Think I've just about got the jist of it now though.

I'm interested in what perspective people are playing in?? 1st? 3rd? Or a mixture of both?
3rd person for me seems a bit buggy, so have done the majority in FP so far.

That's the major gripe at the minute with me, as I feel with earlier Fallout games, the transmission between the two was pretty seamless. Sadly doesn't seem to be the case with F4.

Thoughts??

It's a chore.
Don't open that door.
I don't want to explore.
Can't take those loading screens anymore.
There's no worthwhile lore in that drawer.
It's a chore.

Yeah pretty much. I was indifferent to all of the factions. The Institute only exists in the game
for the 'Shaun is Father' reveal,
which itself falls flat because I don't care about the player character, and I don't care about the player character because I don't know anything about him and have no reason to care, and I don't know anything about him because the dialogue has been dumbed down and because the dialogue has been dumbed down I can't tailor my choices anymore... etc, etc. The bottom line is I just don't. fucken. care.

You've nailed it here. What's the point in breaking the wall that's always been there between player character and player if you're going to give the guy about as much life as a tramps vest? Even most of his dialogue lines sound like the voice actor would rather be doing ANYTHING else other than reading out those lines. Then the dialogue wheel often leaves me thinking 'what? that's not what I wanted to say' when I interpret the 1 word choice different to what it actually is.

It's still an alright game for the combat and exploration, but shit, where's the life?

I'm glad I haven't played the Witcher 3 yet!

I'll pick it up at some point though because I don't think I've seen a bad word said about it.

There are no bad words to say about it Ste. Now I loved Dragon Age Inquisition last year, Witcher 3 tramples all over it

It's the best game I've played in long, long time is Witcher 3. In fact, although I don't like saying this about newer games, but I can't think of any better games I've ever played. Nostalgic feelings with old games aside, Witcher 3 is nearly perfect

It's far from a bad game C&B, in fact it's a really good game and easily has the best combat system of any of the FO games, which was the series biggest criticism. It's just... it's lacking and somewhat dumbed down compared to other games in the series. Soulless is how I'd describe it, the dialogue really is poor. The game world is fucking huge, dense and often incredible to look at but it's definitely missing some of that FO charm the likes of NV had in abundance. I just feel a bit let down as a fan of the series, which is a shame because they improved on so many things, only to slip up where it (imo) matters most.

I keep seeing all this good stuff about The Witcher 3 and I'm tempted to check it out one day... but I heard a lot of good stuff about Dragon Age Inquisition too, and I've come to the conclusion that DA is actually a bit shit and it looks as if it's going to be the first game in about a decade that I buy and don't actually complete. How similar is Witcher 3 to DA?

I have to admit, I do struggle to get motivated for "big" games anymore... and when I say "big", I mean it in the sense of games that have about 100+ hours of play time in them. Because most of the time, they're packed with repetitive shit that I just can't be arsed for. MGS V and Fallout 4 are rare exceptions to this in that they're both big, sprawling games that keep me hooked, but in recent months I've played through Dragon Age, Far Cry 4 and Assassins Creed Unity, and all of them just felt padded out with pointless, dull side missions.

People seem to love it when games give you a shit load of things to do and you get 100+ hours out of them... honestly, give me a 10-15 hour or so game like The Last of Us or Uncharted over the 60 hours I pissed away on Dragon Age any day of the week.

Eh, maybe I'm harsh on Dragon Age. As I said, I did play it for 60 hours, so it couldn't have been all that bad. I guess I just hit a wall where I realised that the combat was about the worst I've ever seen in any game (so bad) and the side quests were all pointless and just not enjoyable.

Even the worst parts of W3 are only comparatively bad in comparison to the rest of the game (Dandelion stuff IMO)
Still got a few bugs though, for example my Roach is now black

Can't think of many prosaic or repetive questlines/sidequest threads in the Witcher III and that's saying something given the sheer amount of narrative content in the game. My only gripes with the game are some framerate issues, which stick out in some areas because of the detached third-person perspective, and relatively sparse amount of lore -- but then the latter only became a complaint because I enjoyed the experience so much it made me desperate to learn as much about the universe as possible.

In comparison, and to continue to flog this dying horse, MGS: TPP and FO4 are more fat than meat.

Just played for an hour. Bloody strange game. I ran around in my pants for ages as I had no idea I could change clothes.

I've got no idea if I'm meant to be collecting everything I find. How many dog bowls does one guy need?

Lots. You need to collect materials for building things and for upgrading weapons/armour. Adhesive is important, as are copper, circuitry, oil, screws and gears. You can make your own adhesive by planting and harvesting tato, mutfruit and corn and combining those with purified water at a cooking station to create vegetable starch. It takes a while to get used to the crafting system, so I wouldn't worry about it too much an hour in to the game. Just collect as much crap as you can while out and about and return home to scrap it in the workbench when you get to your max carry weight.

tell u wot, this game is much more of a success as a pick up and play experience than it is as a story-driven rpg. think only hotline miami rivals it for blowing off steam after work, but then i only own about five ps4 games.

Downloading. I'll have a listen, and criticise you, when I finish work :)

Edit: Enjoyed it while playing some CS DM. Nice and relaxing listen which is a bit different for a gaming podcast, they're usually done in a really noticeably forced 'upbeat, much lols' style. Only complaint was the FO intro music drowning your voices out at the beginning. Good work though, will tune in in the future.

Also, are you the guy with the deeeper voice? If so you sound so much like Richard Lewis, it's uncanny.

I have no idea who Richard Lewis is - I am the one who speaks first and introduces the show and sections, personally I feel that you might be talking of Gary (who mentions being from Barnsley) I consider my tone more shrill than deep! Cheers for the feedback thoug, will make sure I do a better job of balancing the sound. Relaxed is the style we go for. Worked with Gary for 6 years and is one of my best mates so after he moved jobs we decided to just have our games chats as a podcast, really enjoying it so far. May not sound like a lot but that episode was our most popular with about 50 downloads from the site we track and is also our most popular ranked episode on iTunes, although it doesn't give you actual stats from what I can see.

Yeah, me too now. I've hit an early wall, disappointingly. Gonna give it another go when I get back from the football later on.

Not necesarily a glitch if you've changed horses. Gerald calls any horse he rides Roach
