Just started a new save on FM12 (Venezia - Serie D) but am tempted by FM17, is it worth it....?

might be, however if fm12 is the last one you played, it's come a long way in the last 3 years, might be confusing there's a lot more tactical mishaps and a lot of it isn't plug and play anymore, however there is FM touch which ignores some tactical aspects and is a streamlined version

Gills promoted in first year, comfortably survived the second year in the Championship and in the play-offs in the third. All of which achieved from the money raised from selling Dack in the first window for £5.5 million. Quite impressive results all told considering my highest earner is only on £6.5k a week! Money started to run out now though, despite getting through on frees and loans since day one bar a couple of purchases, so I'd imagine I'd have to start selling my better players in january.

Kwesi Appiah is an absolute hero for me, with Lyle Taylor and Jake Forster-Caskey amongst my highest rated. Had Alfie Mawson on loan for 6 months too and he was a beast. Was quite surprised to find Everton (with Lukaku, Mirallas, Barkley still there) waiting for me in the Championship, and they're still there this season too having lost to Brentford in the play-offs. I'd be happy with another mid-table finish, but more than capable of troubling the play-offs as long as I'm not forced to sell the crown jewels.

York City promoted from VNL as champions, lost fa trophy final to Lincoln city

now in league 2, signed Lewis Walters (former leeds academy player) also signed paul McKay for a 2nd season on loan from leeds (he was my star defender with a rating of 7.15 overall)

so far played 6 won 2 drew 2 and lost 2, not bad as our aim is surviving

Season Two: Won the County Antrim Shield, finished second in the NIFL Championship, lost to Dergview in the play off.
Season Three: Took over Glentoran who were relegated at Dergview's expense. Won the NIFL Championship, Steel & Sons Cup, Intermediate Cup and Irish Cup - qualifying for the Europa League.
Season Four: Crashed out of every cup so far in the first round, Europa League was a nice pay day against the Serbian Cup winners... Solidly mid table at the half way point.

I'm enjoying it much more than FM16 (though i've only got 8 hours playtime)

No major updates, but every little feature seems a bit more polished. Also, seems to be considerably faster at running/saving.

Been done over by stupid player/goalkeeper errors a few times, but that's just what you come to expect with FM. Haven't found anything that's made me not want to continue playing and wait for the full game release.

On last years game I had a goal ruled out because the opposition goalkeeper was offside- I know it doesn't even make sense, the goalkeeper then got booked for arguing against it!

Enjoyed the little bit of FM17 I've played so far, got multiple games on the go but haven't got far on any. On one I started unemployed and ended up manager of Cardiff Met University, which according to the social feed made Simon Cowell unhappy.

On my save as Bristol City I targeted playoffs, found myself bottom of the league after drawing 1-1 against Villa, out of the League Cup following a 4-2 defeat at Hillsborough, changed from 4-2-3-1 to 3-5-2 for the Villa game, then beat Rotherham 3-0 and Wednesday 5-0.

Worst thing about the 4-2 defeat was that Wednesday had 4 shots on target, all in the first half to put them 4 up, whereas I ended with 12 on target, and if I remember right one of the goals was an own goal.

Apparently listening to your assistant manager for match preparation makes you almost unbeatable (or John Pemberton is a god).
After my upturn in form using 3-5-2 things went downhill again and I was given one game to save my job- I even watched the team line ups happened expecting to be sacked after this game. I decided to follow Pembertons advice, the result was a convincing 3-0 win. Seeing as he saved my job I decided to follow his advice again. Lo and behold another 3-0 win.

I've now played 5 matches where I followed his advice, 5 wins, 17 scored, 4 conceded. All games comfortable except Huddersfield away where there was a nervous final 10 minutes but it ended 3-2. Preston away looked dodgy for a bit after going from 3-0 up to 3-2, but an 84th minute strike to finish the game off settled any nerves.

As an aside one of my signings, a 25 year old named Samuel has been an absolute revelation, particularly after following the assistants advice. Signed for under 700k he is on 10 goals from 18 league starts with another 9 assists. 5 of those goals and 7 of the assists have been in the 5 games where I listened to Pemberton.

I listened to the assistant from time to time on last years game but the results were largely inconsistent. Admittedly 5 games isn't very many, but 100% wins from 5 games is no mean feat.

Edit- I lost just 2 games after posting this, but worst of all my Brazilian talisman was injured for 5 months during the game.

Finished my first season in 18th, Tammy netted 17 with 12 assists and Lafferty who I bought for £775k scored 19, just conceded far too many. Got an offer for Lafferty in the summer for £3.2m so could hardly turn it down although kind of regretting it as I don't have a back up for Tammy whose just got injured for 2 months (in December) having netted 9 in 18 games, going to be a tough 2 months. Currently about 16th after struggling at the start of the season.

Well Tammy has just returned from injury, in which time I've had 10 league games and 2 cup games, I've picked up 13 points from 3 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses. Managed to beat Newcastle and get draws at top of the table QPR and high placed Burnley. In the absence of Tammy I played Wes Burns and Jayden Stockley (24 year old signed from Aberdeen at start of last season) between them they scored 11 goals in the 12 games, a decent return for the back ups who'd barely scored at all beforehand. Sold Luke Freeman for an initial £5m rising to £6.5m million on deadline day. Couldn't replace him but the figure was too much to turn down as I have a couple of youngsters who I can hopefully develop over half a season. I'm 11 points clear of the drop so hopefully shouldn't get dragged in and just cement another mid table position. Used the Freeman money to sign Tom Bradshaw and a keeper from QPR.

So I got Real Pharma Odesa promoted to the top tier of Ukranian football. Took me 10 seasons to do so, 3 seasons in the Second League and 7 seasons in the First League. It got frustrating bottling it every single year but we finally did it this time and I'm delighted. Next up is to begin dominating Ukraine and later Europe.

Leo Cittadini, bought for 1.3 million, one of my best players in the season. Sold 1 year later for 11.75m to Borussia Mönchengladbach with a 30% sell on fee.
Samuel, bought for 700k, 1 season later, and 5 months injured, turning down 6m offers. But even missing half the season he was huge for me.

Ended up 11th, dropping 6 places in the last 2 games!

Brought a couple of promising players from N Ireland and another from Salford. End of the season the centre back from Ballinamallard Utd and the AM from Salford were sold for a combined £1.3million...

Season Five: Pissing it. Literally. P.22 W.15 D.6 L.1. Already 10 points clear of second place Morecambe. Number of key signings, Christian Doidge and Billy Bingham return, Sam Corne, Arran Racine, Ryan Sweeney, Jack Munns, Sam Deering plus a left wing newgen from Dungannon Swifts and a left back newgen from Ards. They're going to sell for a lot of money eventually... Northern Ireland U-21s are my feeder team.

In 4th so far this season, second year in the Ukranian premier league. I think Europa is possible this season, going to see if I can make a push for it.

Just started up my first save on FM17.

Started unemployed and waited a few months to see which jobs had appeared. Dover were rock bottom of the conference so applied for the job and got it. So far it's going very well and I've managed to steady the ship, 12 matches in to my stint and I've not lost in the league since my opening game away at Gateshead. Took higher division Stevenage to a first round replay, losing 4-3 in ET at their place but we didn't disgrace ourselves.

Dover have a few pacy players and an absolute gem in Ricky Miller, 22 goals in 24 games so far. Got Zavon Hines in on a free to replace the long term injured Lafayette and he's proving a decent addition.

Decided to utilise the pace of the front line by playing in a 4-1-3-2 Wide formation with Modeste, Miller, Zavon Hines and Emmanuel up top. Dover have an OK defence, and their front line guarentees goals at Conference level, so we simply outscore teams.

24 games into the season we sit 14th on 31 points, in contrast, it was 24th and 8 points when I took over on game 13. So a decent start, injuries are going ok, going to try and push for play offs by end of season but may be a stretch too far, squad is too good for relegation.

My issue with this game (and indeed most FMs) is that there is such an obvious glass ceiling for most clubs and once you get there you more or less implode. There is more or less no chance of usurping the top 4 or 5 clubs, no matter what tactics you have or who you sign - I always seem to lose heavily against the big sides and I've tried all sorts of tactics. I've been playing as Burnley, got them promoted last season and started off this season ok. Then I had a couple of games against the Manchester clubs, lost both 5-1 and all my squad lost all their morale, a few wanted moves to bigger clubs immediately, and kicked off massively when I told them to wait (and the rest of the squad bizarrely all seem to want them to be sold), so I was left with half a team who didn't want to be at the club, and the other half who were stroppy. Since then I've lost 8 from 8, in the bottom three and I'm not sure how I'm going to recover this situation considering I'm in February and can't do anything with the squad.

It's almost as if the game basically says 'Ok, you're doing well here, we can't have that - let's fuck this up for you right away'.

I will admit freely that I think the games have become too complex for the casual player such as myself - which basically translates as you have to dedicate way too much time to the intricacies and fine tuning to have a chance of being successful. Realism is all well and good, but it's getting TOO real for me. Less complexity would make for more enjoyable gameplay. When you start losing games because you've forgotten something minor it's just frustrating, and ultimately a little bit boring.

Follwing on from yesterday's post I loaded the game up today and must have forgot to save for a few games.. annoying but not too bad just had to replay 3 games starting with Macclesfield away.. well.. we somehow won 9-0..

Well quite. You always hear of these people who get Woking from non-league to champions of the world or similar and I just wonder - how?! Unless they're cheating massively to do it I suppose. For me, as I said, the game more or less blocks out achievement at a certain level. Maybe I'm just really bad at the game (quite possible), or maybe I'm not willing to spend 10 hours refining my tactics so they're perfect (certainly true) or maybe it's just that the game demands such a level of input that it leaves the casual player in its wake, unable to provide all the detail that the game requires in order to be successful?

Not sure of the answer really, but it's getting a bit boring now.

Not as boring as the EA servers on Ultimate Team mind.

This FM and last FM are the first ones where I've not been able to take Lincoln from the Conference or L2, to consecutive PL and CL wins, and sell-out 90k home games etc.

This one I'm in my 5th season and although I got out of the Conference in my first season, I had been coming a point or three short of the L2 PO's for 3 years before making it in.

It's certainly not as easy as FM15, but easier than FM16. It seems like it'll be a bit of a balance on this one i.e. you can make it through the leagues but at a slower pace, which I don't necessarily mind.
