We fielded a weakened team for 46 league games and got away with it

Do you have to play your first team or get fined or has that been changed?
I think that is a part that's been changed from what I can gather, no more fines for weakened teams like the 'weakened' Luton team that got to the Semi Final last season.

I think I read its changed to just 4 players who played in either the last league game or next league game have to be in the squad for the trophy game as opposed to last season which was a higher number.

Not quite as simple as that

Really?

The full-strength policy for the season 2016-2017 competition was five of the starting line-up must have started the previous or following game (a reduction from six in season 2015-2016) or five of the starting 11 who have made the most starting appearances in the League and domestic cup competitions fixtures during the current season.

Invited category 1 clubs were asked to follow a different set of criteria, with 6 of the starting 11 required to be under-21 as of June 30, 2016. None of the invited clubs failed to comply.”

The new rules are any goalkeeper and only 4 outfield players meeting the first team criteria

A qualifying outfield player would be considered as any player who meets the same full strength criteria as 2016/17, is on loan from a Premier League or Category 1 club or has made 40 first team appearances.

Noticed this wasn't mentioned yet in our thread, but our board decided to canvas the fans on their views for or against.

98% voted against, 2% voted for.

Naturally the club then went ahead and voted for.

Similar to us Fenty came out a while back and said how it hadn't worked and needed a major upheaval, then went and voted for it again.

If they're gonna vote for it because of the money then they should at least come out and say if they think the Premier League have us over a barrel, then at least we know if they're on our side or not. I like how Accrington Stanley air their views on the divide in football.

As did we, pretty much the same % as this poll. But the club still went for the revised format. With the greater prize money the reasoning.

Saw that earlier, great the U20's won the World Cup of course, but quite sad the FA are using it as an excuse to make it look like their new tournament format is working. They might as well scrap this now, absolutely no interest in it whatsoever, I used to follow it and watch the live games on TV but I refuse to even look at the results now.

Does not suprise me. I fully expect b teams in pyramid in next 5-10 years. Prem want it, so FA and EFL will try and do deal for them.

Once enough people accept efl trophy the league three options will return

B teams will be the death of lower league football. Final confirmation we aren't wanted. May as well franchise the premier league while we are at it. Far too many North West and London teams. Missing loads of revenue in East Midlands and Yorkshire

Apparently out of the entire u20 squad only 6 appearances were made in that joke of a trophy.

I'd let them off if it turns out that in their time out of the FL they're somehow unaware of the controversy surrounding the cup.

Bullshit, our fans are aware of it, and I'm sure our crowds for it will be shite. We're good at doing low crowds.

I really hope we put in a hopeless effort of defending this trophy, out in the first round will do.
Thoroughly enjoyed winning it last season but the priority is getting promoted, so no distractions are required

I do wonder how many of the typical matchday crowd are aware of the politics around football though. Those of us who post on here and on our clubs on forums, or who go along to trust meetings and the like are pretty small in number compared to the size of the average home crowd and it could be that many of them simply turn up, enjoy the football and then go home and don't debate or read into things going on behind the scenes, even though they would still be considered proper fans they aren't like us, in the same way that someone can be a fan of sci-fi movies without also posting on websites about them, reading news about upcoming films and going to conventions.

I'd hazard a guess that FGR fans on average are more deeply into all things football than fans of other clubs just given they're a small club from a small town with a distinct ethos and a larger-than-life owner.

I really hope a group with ourselves and Vale in it avoids Stoke u23's. Could see all 3 of them games being well supported which this competition certainly doesn't need nor merit.

Yeah and it's obviously been fixed like that with local derbies as well to bump up attendances, we've got Scunny and Doncaster in ours which will unfortunately see high travelling support (well from Grimsby and Donny anyway).
