How did Winchester do on his debut? He'll get a good reception next week, came through our academy and was popular.
He was in contention for MoM. Cooper might even make him captain for the game.
FGR Stroud is going by what he said. Think he goes to pretty much every game.
Indeed I was one of the 72 FGR fans at game.
Embarrassing having so few away fans but hey ho we did make ourselves heard.
After what was probably FGR's best win in two years, I'm hoping there will be more green & black shirts in away end.

The penalty award was wrong: the ball was kicked at defender at speed from very short distance. His arm was hanging at a normal position. Case of ball to hand.

I've been reading the Grimsby forum and am chuffed to bits at the compliments showered on FGR for being fitter and better organised than Grimsby. Thanks Grimsby it shows that you guys are real knowledgeable lovers of football.

Grimsby will probably not have such a bad game for rest of season so just as well to get it out of the way early on. FGR cannot nor will not be able to perform at such high standards but nevertheless it bodes well for the Village Club.

Wrong - if his arm was against his body then fair enough. However, his arm is out and he was at least a few feet away.

That's never a penalty. Ridiculous to expect players to have their hands tied to their bodies.

I mean I appreciate Grimsby aren’t exactly going to be setting anything alight this season and expectations are going to be justifiably low, but fuck me, that defending is bloody brilliant. What you been doing all summer?

Gav Gunning was quality by all accounts. Can't understand how Grimsby fans didn't rate him, good defender, gets stuck in and a big character on and off the pitch. Was captain on Saturday as well. Top player.

People will think you're joking - we ACTUALLY played cricket folks.

It wasn't that we didn't rate him. His attitude stunk. He clearly didn't want to be at the club and now seems to proper hate us. Taunting McKeown on one of the free kicks summed up his pathetic personality.

Grimsby tried to play 352 and with no quality wingbacks you're going to fail every time..

Long season for you lot with Jolley clueless, comical defending

We have good wing backs, we just didn't play them for some reason. I like the system but agree that it's going to fail massively if we don't have the personnel for it. Dixon can't even manage half the pitch nevermind all of it and Clifton isn't suited there at all. Fox and Hall-Johnson should have a much better time of it.

It will take time but I'm confident we can make it work. We still need a few more signings though.

Clifton looked so out of place and seemed to be really struggling at times. When he was further up the pitch, he made some good moves and crosses etc.

having finally seen the highlights was pleased to see Reece Brown not just show his skills receiving the ball but also to come out top in a couple of tussles, as last year he seemed a bit lightweight which held him back.

Reece Hall-Johnson is decent, to be fair. I'm not convinced about Fox/Clifton in these roles, though. I'd like to see us go with a 4-3-3. The players on Saturday didn't seem to know their roles at all. There were gaps all over and it just looked all lopsided and messy. You can't give those chances away when Doidge is sniffing around either. The goal from the corner was most disappointing for me, it was just sloppy half hearted brains completely switched off defending. I can take the stupid backpass mistakes, but the Doidge corner one was almost like we had given up. You won't see any easier brace scored this season than the one we gave Doidge. Reid was terrific too. Fair play to FGR, they could have had 6 or 7 on another day and I'd be pretty excited about the season ahead ahead after that.

I remember people laughing when I said we'd be a total footballing side under Cooper. Hasn't always worked, especially last season but we've stuck with it and when it does work we're great to watch. Think we've got a team more capable of making it work a bit more often this season.

Plus our development/youth teams are all being recruited/coached to play that style, possession/playing it out from the back ethos throughout the club. Nice to see.

Honestly the only time I noticed Gunning on Saturday was when he was trying to block McKeowns view and was singing to him while he was trying to line up his wall.

Gunning was played in midfield half the time for us. I always thought he had something about him in terms of quality as a centre half but as said, his attitude was appalling.

Hmm, why was Grimsby's keeper all the way out by the corner flag for that back pass own goal?

I just don't understand it.

The player passing it back should of looked, but why was the keeper nowhere nearer his goal???

He had gone across for the throw in if needed but it got thrown to Collins instead, the rest as we say, is history. :ffs:

That's what sweeper keepers do, move around and make themselves available for the pass/get involved in the build up play. Sometimes when we have goal kicks, our keeper plays it out short and then moves out of his box to receive the return.

Proper football.

Ah, so there was some logic behind it.

Carry on.

I was shocked by the number of attempts we had on goal, including how many were on target, going from the stats on the Beeb. I must have seen three or four games last season where we didn't manage that many...in total! The frustration of many of our fans is how many times last season we dominated possession in games but rarely converted that into shots on goal, our opponents were just happy to wait for a chance to hit us on the break or for a defensive blunder to gift them a chance. It could be that Cooper has finally assembled a squad of players capable of producing his vision...mid table obscurity may not be beyond us!

Also there wasn’t as much fannying about between keeper and defenders as last season, a few occasions but more often than not it was launch it.
Ironically enough it was us with the pratting about back passes, with oh such hilarious consequences.

Didn’t even notice Harry Davis, not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing for a defender.

Didn't notice him during the match as our entire defence was trash but seeing the highlights, depending on how you look at it, he might have been at fault for both of the 'normal' goals.
